Cherreads

Chapter 53 - Chapter 33

The elegant Alolan Ninetales stood gracefully on the battlefield, its snow-white fur glowing softly under the stage lights while its nine flowing tails swayed behind it like living frost.

The female announcer's voice rose with clear excitement.

"Ladies and gentlemen, we have reached the finals! On this side stands Elara, a well-known coordinator who competed in last year's Grand Festival! And on the other side… we have Gil! A newcomer who has fought his way through every round and made it all the way to the finals in his very first Contest!"

"Can this underdog pull off an upset, or will experience prevail? Let's find out!"

Gil stood opposite Elara, his expression calm on the surface, but his mind was racing.

From the previous rounds, he had already noticed the clear difference. Experienced performers like Elara didn't just use strong moves, they made every attack look beautiful and flashy. Their combinations had flair, presence, and impact. Even defensive moves like Aurora Veil looked stunning.

In contrast, his own battles had been more direct. Scyther's attacks were sharp and effective, but they lacked that extra touch of beauty and spectacle. Only Eevee seemed to naturally turn her moves into something both clever and dazzling.

Gil knew that against Elara, his chances of winning were slim.

But that didn't mean he was going to back down.

Taking a steady breath, he threw his Poké Ball forward.

"Charmeleon, come on out, girl! Let's show them what we can do!"

The Poké Ball burst open in a flash of warm light.

Charmeleon emerged onto the stage, the flame on her tail burning brightly. The warmth radiating from her body met the faint chill coming from Alolan Ninetales, causing wisps of steam to rise between them.

She stood tall, her eyes locked onto Ninetales with quiet determination.

"Gong…!"

A sharp, clear sound rang across the Contest Hall, officially signaling the start of the battle.

Gil immediately gave the first command.

"Charmeleon, Smokescreen!"

"Charrraaar!"

Charmeleon let out a fierce cry as she released a thick cloud of smoke that rapidly spread across the stage, covering the battlefield in a black haze.

Elara remained calm and gave her command.

"Ninetales, Ice Beam!"

"Nineee…!"

Ninetales let out a melodious cry as it fired a sharp beam of ice. The attack cut through the haze, leaving a trail of sparkling frost in its path.

"Charmeleon, Flamethrower!" Gil called out.

"Chaaarr…!"

Charmeleon unleashed a powerful stream of flames from within the smoke.

Both attacks collided in the center of the field. Fire and ice clashed violently, creating a burst of steam and sparks.

When the smoke began to clear, both Trainers had lost some points.

The battle continued, and the difference in their styles became increasingly clear.

Elara and Ninetales fought with grace and beauty. Its Ice Beams curved elegantly through the air, while Aurora Veil shimmered as it blocked incoming attacks. Its Moonblasts burst into showers of sparkling light that drew cheers from the audience.

Every move blended offense and performance, turning the battle into a dazzling spectacle.

In contrast, Charmeleon fought with more direct and heavy attacks. Her Slashes were sharp and forceful, while her Flamethrowers were powerful but lacked the same visual beauty.

As the battle went on, Charmeleon began to lose ground.

Even Smokescreen wasn't enough to turn the tide. Whenever the battlefield was obscured, Ninetales would simply use Dazzling Gleam, its brilliant light dispersing the smoke and causing Gil to lose more Contest points with each exchange.

Gil could feel the gap between them widening with every passing second.

No matter what he tried, Elara always seemed to have an answer.

His eyes remained locked on the points display as his score continued to fall. This was the finals… the one stage he had fought through every single round to reach.

And yet, with each exchange, it felt as though victory was slowly slipping through his fingers.

Gil bit his lip as he watched the score display continue to fall. It wasn't losing itself that bothered him the most. What weighed on him was the fact that he had no answer.

Am I… letting them down?

A heavy pressure settled in his chest.

His hands slowly tightened into fists at his sides.

For the first time since the battle began, doubt quietly surfaced in his mind.

Charmeleon was feeling it too.

After taking another heavy hit, she stumbled slightly. Her breathing had become rough and uneven, and the fierce determination in her eyes was gradually fading.

Slowly, she turned her gaze toward Gil.

He wasn't looking at the battlefield or the score display. His brows were tightly furrowed, and his clenched fists betrayed the frustration and helplessness he was trying to hide.

She could feel it… he was hurting just as much as she was.

Her gaze shifted toward Ninetales. It stood proudly beside its Trainer as the cheers of the audience echoed throughout the hall. Elara wore a smile filled with pride and confidence.

Then, she looked back at Gil.

There was no trace of his usual gentle smile on his face. Only worry, frustration, and helplessness.

Her heart ached at the sight.

I don't want to lose.

Not for trainers.

Not for Eevee and Scuther waiting for us.

Trainer always believed in me… so this time, I want to be the one who doesn't give up.

The wavering determination in Charmeleon's eyes slowly returned as she turned her gaze back toward Ninetales, burning brighter than before.

Warmth began to surge through her body as the flame on her tail suddenly flared. It burned brighter and brighter, taking on a fierce crimson glow. The heat radiating from her steadily intensified, causing the air around her to visibly distort.

For a brief moment, even the battlefield itself seemed to grow warmer.

Gil's eyes widened slightly as he noticed the sudden change.

But before he could say anything, the announcer's excited voice rang throughout the Contest Hall.

"Oh! What's this?! Charmeleon's flames have suddenly grown much stronger! Could this be Blaze…?!"

Charmeleon slowly turned her head and looked at him.

Their eyes met.

No words were exchanged.

But in that single moment, something passed between them… a silent understanding.

Gil smiled softly as he realized that Charmeleon wasn't ready to lose.

"Charmeleon… let's do this."

"Charmeleon~♡"

She turned back to face Ninetales, her blazing tail casting a fierce crimson glow across the stage as her fighting spirit fully reignited.

Elara immediately noticed the sudden change in Charmeleon and gave her next command without hesitation.

"Ninetales, Moonblast!"

"Nineee!"

Ninetales gathered a large sphere of pink moonlight energy in front of it. The orb grew brighter and larger before Ninetales launched it across the field.

Gil's expression sharpened.

"Charmeleon, Fire Pledge! Now!"

"Charmeleon!"

Without the slightest hesitation, Charmeleon slammed her tail against the ground. Fiery symbols lit up across the battlefield as a massive pillar of crimson flames erupted upward, empowered by Blaze and burning much fiercer than before.

The two attacks collided mid-field.

The powerful Fire Pledge clashed directly with the Moonblast. For a few seconds, pink and crimson light mixed violently in the center of the stage before Charmeleon's boosted flames overpowered the Fairy-type attack. The Moonblast exploded into scattered particles of light, while the remaining flames continued surging forward.

The sheer force and heat of the Fire Pledge forced Ninetales to immediately abandon its position and dodge to the side. The attack narrowly missed, but the heat still reached it, making Ninetales flinch slightly as it landed.

For a brief moment, the momentum of the battle seemed to shift.

Cheers erupted from the audience as they watched Charmeleon's overwhelming display of power.

But Elara quickly regained her composure and followed up without giving Charmeleon a chance to recover.

"Ninetales, Blizzard!"

"Ninetaaales!"

An icy storm erupted across the battlefield. Freezing winds swept through the stage as razor-sharp shards of ice descended from every direction.

Even with Blaze strengthening her flames, Charmeleon found herself overwhelmed by the relentless assault.

"Charmeleonnnn…!"

She cried out as she fought against the freezing storm, refusing to take a single step back despite her growing exhaustion.

Just as both Trainers were about to give their next commands…

"Gong…!"

A sharp sound suddenly rang throughout the Contest Hall.

The battle was over.

For a brief moment, the entire Contest Hall fell silent.

Then, the female announcer's voice rang throughout the hall.

"Time's up! What an incredible battle fought until the very last second!"

She paused for a moment before continuing.

"And now… the winner of the Contest Finals is… Elara and her Alolan Ninetales!"

Thunderous applause immediately filled the Contest Hall.

Charmeleon's legs gave out as she sank to one knee upon the stage, breathing heavily. The fierce crimson glow of her tail had begun to fade, leaving only its familiar warm flame behind.

She looked tired and slightly dejected.

Gil quietly walked over to her side and gently placed a hand upon her head.

"You did well, girl," he said softly. "I'm proud of you. You gave it everything you had… and that's more than enough for me."

Charmeleon froze for a moment before slowly looking up at him.

There wasn't even the slightest hint of disappointment on his face. Only warmth, pride, and the gentle smile she had been longing to see return.

Her eyes widened slightly.

"Char…?"

She had lost. She couldn't make him smile upon the stage like Elara and Ninetales had.

And yet… her Trainer was still proud of her.

A warmth spread through her chest as the last of her doubts quietly melted away.

"Charmeleon~♡"

Letting out a soft, affectionate cry, she closed her eyes and gently leaned into his touch, rubbing her cheek against his hand with a happy smile.
