Cherreads

Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: The Hospital at the Edge of Memory

The sky was pale, washed in the quiet light of early morning.

A gentle breeze carried the scent of cherry blossoms through the open window, their petals drifting softly like whispers of spring. Beyond the glass stood a sakura tree in full bloom, its beauty fleeting yet eternal.

Inside the hospital room, Tachibana Yuki lay still.

Her small hands rested atop a thin white blanket, her breathing shallow but steady. The steady beep of the heart monitor echoed through the room—a fragile reminder of the life she clung to.

She watched the petals fall.

And smiled.

"Spring has come again," she whispered.

A Fragile Heart

The door creaked open.

"Yuki," her mother called softly.

Yuki turned her head, her gentle eyes lighting up. "Good morning, Mother."

Her mother approached her bedside, brushing a stray lock of hair from her face. Though she smiled, worry lingered in her eyes.

"How are you feeling today?"

"A little tired," Yuki admitted. "But happy."

"Happy?" her mother asked gently.

Yuki nodded toward the window. "The cherry blossoms are blooming."

Her mother's gaze followed.

"They're beautiful."

"Yes," Yuki said softly. "Just like a dream."

But dreams, she knew, were fleeting.

A Promise She Could Not Forget

After her mother left, Yuki reached beneath her pillow and retrieved a folded letter. The paper was worn from being read too many times.

Dear Haru,

Thank you for being my friend…

Her fingers trembled slightly as she traced the words she had written.

"I wonder if he's waiting," she murmured.

The memory of a young boy beneath the sakura tree filled her heart with warmth.

His laughter.

His kindness.

His unwavering promise.

"You can borrow my tomorrows!"

She smiled faintly.

"You're such a strange boy, Haru."

Closing her eyes, she pressed the letter to her chest.

"If miracles exist… we'll meet again."

The Boy Beneath the Sakura Tree

At that very moment, miles away, a young Haru stood beneath the blooming cherry blossoms, clutching a small sakura petal.

He waited.

And waited.

And waited.

But Yuki did not come.

"Maybe she's just late," he whispered, trying to reassure himself.

The wind rustled the branches above.

Petals drifted to the ground.

Still, he remained.

"I'll wait," he said quietly. "That's what I promised."

As the sun began to set, his voice trembled.

"…So please come back."

But only silence answered him.

At the Edge of Time

Back in the hospital, twilight painted the sky in shades of gold and crimson.

Yuki's breathing grew weaker.

The heart monitor's steady rhythm slowed, each beep echoing like a fading memory.

She gazed at the sakura tree outside her window, its petals glowing in the setting sun.

"Haru…" she whispered.

Her fingers tightened around the letter.

"I'm sorry."

Tears welled in her eyes.

"I wanted to see you again."

The wind stirred, rustling the blossoms outside.

Petals slipped through the open window, swirling gently around her bed.

The room filled with a soft, golden light.

Yuki's eyes widened.

"…So beautiful."

She felt no pain.

Only warmth.

Only peace.

And within that warmth, she heard a distant voice.

"I'll give you my tomorrows."

Her lips curved into a gentle smile.

"…Then I'll borrow them," she whispered.

The Moment the Miracle Was Born

The final note of the heart monitor stretched into a long, continuous tone.

Yet the room felt strangely calm.

The petals glowed, dissolving into shimmering fragments of light.

Time seemed to stand still.

As her consciousness faded, Yuki saw a vision—

A rooftop bathed in sunset.

A boy standing before her.

Older.

Familiar.

"Haru…" she breathed.

He reached out to her.

"I've been waiting."

Tears slipped down her cheeks as she smiled.

"I kept my promise."

The light enveloped her, carrying her beyond the boundaries of time and memory.

The Birth of Borrowed Tomorrow

Years later—

A breeze swept across the rooftop of a high school.

Cherry blossom petals danced through the air as a boy stood alone, staring at the sky.

"You noticed, didn't you?" a gentle voice asked.

He turned.

And there she was.

"Tachibana Yuki," she said softly. "Nice to meet you."

The miracle had returned.

Not as a ghost.

Not as a memory.

But as a girl living within the tomorrows he had once given her.

Back to the Present

Haru closed his eyes as the memory faded.

"So this is where it all began," he murmured.

Beside him, Sora watched in silence.

"That hospital…" she said gently. "It's where she spent her final days, isn't it?"

Haru nodded.

"Yes. It's where she disappeared."

He looked toward the horizon, determination burning in his eyes.

"And where our miracle was born."

Sora placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder.

"Then we'll go there together."

He smiled softly.

"Yeah."

As cherry blossom petals drifted through the air, Haru whispered into the wind:

"Wait for me, Yuki."

"I'm coming."
