Cherreads

Chapter 11 - Chapter 11: The Pinky Promise Beneath the Sakura Tree

The wind carried the scent of cherry blossoms.

Soft petals drifted through the air like fragments of a dream, painting the world in gentle shades of pink and white. Beneath the blooming sakura tree, a young girl sat quietly, her frail hands resting on her lap.

Tachibana Yuki watched the petals fall, her delicate smile tinged with melancholy.

Spring had always been her favorite season.

Because it was beautiful.

And because it never lasted long.

A Fragile Tomorrow

She pressed a hand gently against her chest, feeling the faint, irregular rhythm of her heart.

Each beat reminded her of what the doctors had said.

"Her condition is severe."

"She must avoid strenuous activity."

"Prepare for the worst."

Yuki had overheard everything.

Even the words they tried to whisper.

Even the tears her mother thought she had hidden.

She understood what they meant.

Her time was limited.

But she refused to cry.

Instead, she chose to smile.

Because if she smiled, perhaps the world would smile back.

The Boy Who Chased Petals

A sudden burst of laughter broke the silence.

Yuki turned her head just in time to see a boy running through the falling blossoms, his arms stretched toward the sky.

"Got it!"

He held up a cherry blossom petal triumphantly, beaming as if he had captured a miracle.

Yuki couldn't help but giggle.

"That's lucky," she said softly.

The boy blinked in surprise, turning toward her.

"Really?"

She nodded. "If you catch a falling sakura petal, your wish might come true."

"Whoa! That's awesome!"

His eyes sparkled with excitement.

"What's your name?"

"Tachibana Yuki," she replied gently. "And yours?"

"Kisaragi Haru!"

He grinned. "Nice to meet you!"

From that moment on, her quiet world began to change.

A Friendship in Bloom

Haru visited her every day after school.

They talked beneath the sakura tree, sharing stories about their dreams and fears.

He told her about his favorite manga, his dislike for homework, and his determination to beat his classmates in races.

She told him about her love for books, her fascination with the stars, and her wish to see the world beyond the hospital walls.

"You don't run like the others," Haru said one afternoon.

Yuki smiled faintly. "I can't. My heart is weak."

Haru frowned. "That's not fair."

She laughed softly. "Life isn't always fair."

"But you're still smiling."

"Because I want to," she replied. "If I stop smiling, I might forget how to be happy."

Haru stared at her for a long moment before smiling back.

"Then I'll make sure you never forget!"

The Shadow of Goodbye

As spring deepened, Yuki's strength began to fade.

She grew paler, and her visits became less frequent. Yet Haru continued to come, waiting faithfully beneath the sakura tree.

One afternoon, she gathered her courage and asked the question that weighed heavily on her heart.

"Haru… what would you do if I disappeared?"

He blinked. "Disappear? Like magic?"

She hesitated before nodding.

"Maybe."

He shook his head firmly.

"I wouldn't let that happen!"

Her smile trembled.

"Some things can't be stopped."

Haru clenched his fists.

"Then I'll give you my days!"

Yuki's eyes widened. "Your days?"

"Yeah!" he declared. "You can borrow my tomorrows. I don't need them all!"

A soft laugh escaped her lips.

"You're strange."

"Maybe," he said with a grin. "But I mean it."

The Pinky Promise

He extended his hand, his little finger reaching toward hers.

"Then promise me," Haru said earnestly. "If you disappear, come back someday."

Yuki hesitated.

She knew promises were dangerous.

She knew she might not be able to keep it.

But when she looked into his hopeful eyes, she felt something warm bloom within her chest.

Hope.

With trembling fingers, she linked her pinky with his.

"…Okay," she whispered.

"I promise."

The wind swirled around them, carrying a storm of cherry blossoms into the sky.

Their small hands remained intertwined, sealing a vow that would transcend time itself.

"If I disappear," she continued softly, "I'll return to borrow your tomorrow."

Haru smiled brightly.

"I'll be waiting!"

A Letter Never Sent

Days later, Yuki lay in a hospital bed, the scent of antiseptic replacing the fragrance of sakura.

Her strength was fading.

But her heart was full.

She held a sheet of paper, her hand trembling as she wrote.

"Dear Haru,

Thank you for being my friend.

Because of you, I was never afraid.

If miracles exist, I hope we meet again.

Until then, please live happily—for both of us."

—Yuki

She folded the letter carefully, pressing it to her chest.

Outside her window, cherry blossoms danced in the spring breeze.

Her lips curved into a gentle smile.

"I'll keep my promise," she whispered.

"Even if it takes forever."

Back to the Present

A warm wind brushed against Haru's face as he stood beneath the sakura tree in the present day.

Petals drifted around him, glowing softly in the afternoon light.

He closed his eyes, recalling the warmth of a small hand entwined with his own.

"So this is where it all began," he murmured.

Sora stood beside him, her gaze gentle.

"You remember everything now?"

He nodded.

"Yeah. She promised to come back… and she did."

A faint breeze rustled the branches overhead.

For a fleeting moment, Haru felt a familiar presence beside him.

Soft.

Fragile.

Beloved.

"Haru…"

His eyes widened.

"…Yuki?"

The petals swirled—and then the sensation vanished.

But he smiled.

"She's still out there."

Sora crossed her arms with a small, knowing smile.

"Then we'll find her."

Haru looked up at the blooming sakura, determination shining in his eyes.

"I'll keep my promise too."
