Chapter 7 - CHAPTER SEVEN(7): The Fox of Mist

The wind howled through the peaks as Ethan, Liam, Solomon, and Sylvara climbed higher into the Shadowfang Mountains. The air grew colder, and the mist thickened, swirling unnaturally around them.

Ethan slowed, gripping the Kitana. "Something's not right…"

The map in his hand flickered, its green glow pulsing unevenly. The guiding line disappeared—then reappeared—then vanished again.

"That's not good," Liam said, his voice shaking slightly. "The map has never done that before."

Sylvara's eyes narrowed. "We're not alone."

A sudden, haunting sound echoed through the mountains—a long, chilling wail that seemed to come from everywhere at once. The mist froze mid-air, as if the mountain itself was holding its breath.

Then… she appeared.

From the swirling fog stepped a figure—graceful, silent, and terrifyingly beautiful. A woman with white fox ears, her long silver hair flowing like mist. Her emerald eyes glowed faintly, locking onto Ethan and the others. A soft, ghostly tail drifted behind her, blending into the fog.

Liam took a step back. "Okay… that's definitely not normal."

Sylvara tightened her grip on her daggers. "Careful. She's not just a spirit… she's a guardian."

The creature—Lúghainne—tilted her head slightly, studying them. Then she let out another soft wail. The mist shifted instantly, forming illusions of cliffs collapsing and shadows lunging toward them.

"Don't trust what you see!" Sylvara shouted.

Ethan focused on the Jade Sword. Its green light flared, pushing back the illusions just enough for them to see clearly.

The map flickered again—and suddenly, a new path appeared, faint and unstable.

"She's testing us," Solomon said quickly. "Follow the map—but stay alert. One wrong move and the illusions could become real."

Lúghainne moved like a whisper, circling them without a sound. Her glowing eyes never left Ethan, as if measuring his courage.

Ethan took a deep breath. "We move together. No fear. No hesitation."

Step by step, they followed the faint path. Around them, the mist twisted into false ledges, disappearing ground, and shadowy creatures reaching for them. But the Jade Sword and the map guided them through.

At the final step, Ethan paused. Lúghainne stood directly in front of him now.

For a moment, everything went silent.

Then… she bowed her head slightly.

The mist cleared. The illusions vanished. The true path forward revealed itself, leading deeper into the mountains.

Liam exhaled loudly. "Wait… did we just pass that test?"

Sylvara smirked. "Looks like we did."

Solomon nodded. "She's not our enemy. She's a guardian… and we proved ourselves."

Lúghainne's form slowly dissolved into the mist, her glowing eyes the last thing to fade.

As Lúghainne's form faded into the mist, the mountains grew quiet once more. The swirling fog settled, no longer twisting with danger, but drifting gently as if the path had finally been accepted.

Ethan stood still for a moment, staring at where she had been. The Jade Sword pulsed softly in his hand, its glow now steady again.

"She let us pass," he said quietly.

Solomon nodded. "Not just that… she judged us. And we proved ourselves worthy—at least for now."

Liam stretched his arms, letting out a long breath. "I don't know about you guys, but I never want to see another illusion again."

Sylvara smirked faintly, though her eyes remained sharp. "Don't get comfortable. Guardians don't test you for fun. That was only one of many."

Ethan looked ahead. The path was clearer now, winding deeper into the Shadowfang Mountains. Far in the distance, barely visible through the thinning mist, a faint green glow shimmered.

Emerald-spire Peaks.

He tightened his grip on the sword. "That's where we're headed."

The group stood together for a moment, no one speaking, each of them understanding the same thing—every step forward would only get harder.

But none of them turned back.

With renewed determination, Ethan took the first step.

The others followed.

And together, they continued their journey toward the Jade Sword.
