The days after the entrance exams passed surprisingly slowly. You would think that after battling dungeons, Kerber, Kaisel, and everything else, waiting for the results of the regular school would be the easiest part of life.
She wasn't.
It was torture.
Every morning I woke up and the first thing I did was check my phone, my email, my internet and every morning there was nothing. I was honestly starting to understand why people go crazy while waiting for their entrance exams. Because you have nothing to do, you just wait.
And the waiting is sometimes much worse than the fight itself.
"You're exaggerating."
"Shut up."
"That confirms my theory."
"Which one?"
"That people hate situations they can't control."
"And you ne?"
"No."
"You're lying."
Agrona was silent for a few seconds. "Maybe a little."
"Ha."
Finally, almost a month passed, and one morning it happened. I was sitting at breakfast when the familiar ring of my phone rang, and I automatically reached for it, and then I froze. Because the sender was clear. U.A. High School.
My heart skipped a beat for a moment.
"Not."
"Not."
"This is it."
"Yes."
My mom, sitting across from me, immediately noticed my expression. "Mephi?" I ignored her, just opened the message and read it, several times because my brain refused to cooperate.
Congratulations.
You have been selected as an international student for the academic year...
I barely noticed the rest. I could only read one sentence. Done. The end. Accomplished. I just stared at the screen for a few seconds, and then I realized one thing.
System.
I immediately saw the window open in front of me
[Main task completed]
[Get to U.A.]
I unconsciously exhaled. Only now did I realize how much this task had weighed on me for the past few years. How much I was afraid. How much I didn't want to lose my memories.
For my original life, for everything. Ten years... ten years of fear. And now... it was all over.
"Congratulations." Agron's voice sounded surprisingly sincere this time.
"Thanks."
"Even though I knew from the beginning that you would succeed."
"Clearly."
"I knew it."
"And that's why you were almost as nervous as I was."
"That's slander."
"Sure."
"Absolutely."
I smiled. For the first time in a long time, truly sincerely.
"So what's in there?" Mom asked.
I handed her the phone. Seconds later, she screamed so loudly I almost dropped my mug. "DID YOU GET IT?!"
"Because."
"YOU GOT IT!"
"Mom, the whole street can hear you."
"I DON'T CARE!"
The rest of the day was chaos. Phone calls from relatives and friends, their congratulations. And during all this I was starting to realize one unpleasant thing.. in a few weeks I will fly to the other side of the world, for the first time alone and so far away.
The following days passed surprisingly quickly, arranging documents: confirmations, flight information, just piles of papers.
And then suddenly there was the last week left, then the last three days, and then… the last evening.
I was sitting on the bed surrounded by suitcases. My documents were lying next to me. Passport, airline tickets, cell phone, wallet, everything ready.
Morning came all too quickly. Suddenly I was standing at the door with my suitcases ready and a taxi waiting outside. And the whole family was standing in front of me. Mom looked like she was going to start crying at any moment. Which was honestly a pretty high chance.
"Are you going to eat normally?"
"Yes."
"And sleep?"
"Yes."
"And you won't fight?"
„..."
"Mephi."
"I'll try."
"MEPHI."
"Okay, okay."
She hugged me and didn't say anything for a few seconds, just held me. "I'm proud of you." This time I didn't know what to say, so I just nodded because anything else would have sounded stupid.
Then I said goodbye to the others and got in the car, the house slowly disappeared outside the window and I drove straight to the airport.
The airport was huge, people everywhere, annoying lines and security checks. "Typical airport madness". Fortunately, everything went smoothly. And a few hours later I was sitting on the plane.
For the first time in this life. "If it falls, I'll kill you."
"If it falls, you'll be dead too."
"That's not important."
"I think it is."
The trip took a long, very long time. I ended up sleeping through most of the flight, and when I woke up again, the pilot was announcing the landing.
I looked out the window and saw Japan for the first time, a beautiful place, skyscrapers, lights. A huge amount of lights.
"So here it is."
"Yes."
"The place where the next chapter begins."
Agrona said nothing this time because we both knew I was right.
