Chapter 8 - Competition

From Scranton to Cleveland, Swann Qin got off the plane.

Deep down, he felt an impulse.

"Since I'm already in Cleveland, wouldn't this trip be a waste if I didn't go see Little LeBron?"

To get from Cleveland to Canton, the small city where Eric Snow lived, one had to pass through Akron. Dropping by to see Little LeBron was naturally feasible.

The remaining problem was—even Akron was huge; where would he go to find Little LeBron?

Counting on his fingers, Swann Qin calculated Little LeBron's age at this time—seven or eight years old.

He had read Little LeBron's biography; between the ages of five and eight, Little LeBron had moved more than a dozen times.

"I'm afraid I won't be able to find him."

Swann Qin shook his head. He rented a car in Cleveland and still stopped in Akron, searching for a slum area to find a hot black sister named Gloria James.

As for the result, naturally, he couldn't find her. Looking for a needle in a haystack, how could he possibly find her?

"Forget it, forget it. I can only say I have no fate with Little LeBron in his childhood."

He drove all the way from Akron to Canton, and by noon, he knocked on Eric Snow's door.

The person who opened the door was a middle-aged white man in a suit. Both Swann Qin and this middle-aged white man were taken aback.

"Who are you?"

"Recruiting representative for the University of North Carolina Tar Heels. And you?"

A second later, Swann Qin could roughly guess the identity of the person in front of him—this person must be a recruiting representative from another NCAA institution. Mainly because, within that second, the person who had been smiling just a moment ago saw that Swann Qin was from UNC, and his smile instantly froze.

"I am from the Michigan State Spartans, also a recruiting representative..."

Michigan State University's strength was not weak; historically, they had won the NCAA championship, and the current head coach, Jud Heathcote, was the meritorious coach who had won that title.

The reason for the Michigan State representative's frozen smile was that he had originally felt confident about securing Eric Snow. Eric Snow wasn't very famous in high school. If Michigan State from the Big Ten Conference hadn't extended an offer, he would likely have only been able to go to a weak team in a second-tier NCAA conference.

Therefore, the offer from Michigan State could be considered a major opportunity for Eric Snow. Originally, today, Eric Snow was supposed to confirm his decision to join Michigan State.

Before the full scholarship offer from Michigan State, Snow truly had no reason to refuse. But things were different now…

"Hello, Eric. I am Swann Qin, from the University of North Carolina Tar Heels."

Swann Qin bypassed the Michigan State representative, entered the living room of the Snow residence, and saw Eric Snow, who had already stood up in front of the sofa.

Snow stood up to welcome Swann Qin: "Welcome, Mr. Swann Qin."

He also explained, "I should have been the one to open the door, but this Mr. Pat was closer to the door..."

Swann Qin just nodded with a faint smile, implying that he didn't care about such details.

"Shall we sit down and talk?"

A moment later, in the Snow family's living room, Swann Qin and the Michigan State recruiting representative sat on the side sofas on the left and right, while Eric Snow sat on the long sofa in the middle.

This was the first time Swann Qin had faced direct competition. He had the confidence given to him by UNC, but at this moment, he did not underestimate his opponent.

One must know that Michigan State was not weak; compared to UNC, perhaps they only lacked that little bit of fame. Under these circumstances, whatever choice Eric Snow made was unknown.

"Alright, let's get back to the point. We at Michigan State are willing to offer Eric a full scholarship."

Swann Qin spread his hands: "A full scholarship? Isn't that the baseline?"

"Of course that is the baseline. So in addition to that, we are also willing to promise future playing time. We can promise that starting from his sophomore season, Eric can become a starter for Michigan State."

The Michigan State representative looked at Swann Qin provocatively. In his view, a prestigious school like UNC could not possibly give a playing-time guarantee to a nobody like Eric Snow. Let alone his sophomore year, even a senior-year playing-time guarantee might not exist.

Who would have thought, Swann Qin smiled slightly: "That's where we differ. I can promise that in his freshman season, Eric will be able to get at least 10 minutes of playing time per game, and by his sophomore season, he will be an absolute starter."

UNC was too short on point guards. Swann Qin was very confident. As long as he trained Eric Snow, then after two or three months, Eric Snow would at least be able to secure the position of UNC's second-string point guard.

This was assuming Damon Stoudamire chose UNC. If Damon Stoudamire chose the Arizona Wildcats, then Eric Snow would at least be able to get over 20 minutes of playing time. That is, either Eric Snow would replace UNC's original second-string point guard, Derrick Phelps, as the second-string point guard, or he would directly split the playing time of the point guard position with Derrick Phelps.

But in the eyes of the Michigan State representative, Swann Qin was simply talking nonsense.

"UNC is Dean Smith's team. How could he possibly give such a promise?"

He questioned it immediately, but Swann Qin shrugged: "This isn't a promise given by Mr. Dean Smith; it's a promise given by me."

"You? Ha?"

The Michigan State representative seemed to be laughed into anger. He sneered and said bluntly: "You, a mere assistant coach, can interfere with Dean Smith's personnel decisions?"

He wanted to say that he had worked with Jud Heathcote of Michigan State for many years and didn't have the right to interfere with Jud Heathcote's personnel decisions either.

Swann Qin turned to Eric Snow: "Is there a basketball court nearby?"

Eric Snow nodded: "Of course."

Ten minutes later, a group of three, with yellow, black, and white skin tones, appeared on the street court in this neighborhood. Similarly, in a black neighborhood, the appearance of people with yellow and white skin tones like Swann Qin and the Michigan State representative was bound to attract onlookers.

It was just that Eric Snow seemed to have quite a reputation in this area. While introducing them: "These two are NCAA recruiting representatives who have come to recruit me." He let those black onlookers show some respect... This group of black guys, who were panting like animals, instantly quieted down.

By the time they reached the court, it was already crowded with people watching the excitement.

"So, how are you going to prove yourself?"

The Michigan State representative was impatient to expose what he considered to be Swann Qin's bragging. Swann Qin smiled: "Please wait a moment."

He had Eric Snow shoot ten baskets from outside the three-point line and from mid-range, appearing to observe carefully. In reality, he had already used the second slot of the "Super Training Master" system to bind Eric Snow and obtained a super-detailed analysis report.

[Eric Snow, Height: 191cm, Position: Combo Guard, Strengths: Outstanding defense, decent penetration ability, organizing and passing are his bread and butter; Weaknesses: Poor offensive ability, lack of self-created scoring means, relatively poor shooting ability.]

[Advanced Report: Offensive talent is limited, space for improvement is limited, but his shooting form can be adjusted to slightly enhance his shooting ability; Defense is worth focusing on strengthening, in hopes of becoming his specialty for making a living.]

[Specific Measures: Increase shooting training, correct his shooting posture, find a top-tier explosive player to play one-on-one with him extensively to improve his defensive experience...]

Speaking of this "Super Training Master" slot, last time Swann Qin used slot one to bind Damon Stoudamire, thinking he could unbind it at any time. As it turned out, when he wanted to unbind, the system prompted that he could only unbind after a full season. This made Swann Qin depressed for a long time. Fortunately, he still had two empty slots. This time, using slot two to bind Eric Snow, he could be considered to be burning his bridges.

Now, having obtained this detailed analysis report, what Swann Qin had to do was very simple.

"Twenty shots and only 5 went in, 1 three-pointer and 4 mid-range shots. Your shooting is a bit terrible, Eric..."

Swann Qin joked half-heartedly. Snow shrugged: "Shooting isn't what I'm good at anyway."

"No, it's that your shooting posture has a problem."

Eric Snow's problem wasn't his shooting hand shape, but his posture. The arm movement when he released the ball was too weird. Everyone else bent their arms and went straight up and down, but he seemed a bit like he was throwing a shot put, from front to back.

Right then, Swann Qin helped Eric Snow correct his shooting posture by hand. But after more than ten minutes, Swann Qin discovered that Snow seemed to have become accustomed to his original shooting posture, and he couldn't quite correct it.

The Michigan State representative on the side was sneering, but Swann Qin didn't care, because he received another prompt from the system.

[A shooting posture that is difficult to correct is better left to follow its natural course.]

Therefore, Swann Qin no longer made major corrections to Snow's shooting posture, but instead fine-tuned a few small details. Then, he let Snow continuously try shooting after the fine-tuning.

A few minutes later, the basketball kept flying from Snow's hand and swishing into the metal chain net. Out of 20 shots, Snow made 11, with 3 three-pointers and 8 mid-range shots, more than doubling his shooting percentage compared to before the fine-tuning.

"This..."

Now, it was the Michigan State representative's turn to show an expression of astonishment.

Eric Snow on the court, as the person involved, could also clearly feel that his shooting seemed to have suddenly become smoother. He was a bit excited: "How did you do that, Mr. Swann Qin?"

"It's very simple. My fine-tuning helped you improve the stability at the moment of release, so your shots naturally become easier to hit."

Swann Qin was very confident: "This is just a small trick. I promise, if you choose UNC, under my training, your growth will be more than this. I dare to guarantee that even without Mr. Dean Smith's promise, you will be able to squeeze into the Tar Heels' rotation lineup very quickly."

Eric Snow's eyes flashed with longing, while the Michigan State representative on the side revealed despair.

"Sorry, sir, I think my choice will be... the University of North Carolina Tar Heels!"
