Chapter 4 - The System

Morning arrived slowly in the hospital room.

The storm that had raged through Ironhaven the night before had faded, leaving the city wrapped in gray clouds and the faint glow of early sunlight. Rain still clung to the glass of the hospital window, droplets sliding down in thin trails as the sky gradually brightened.

Inside the room, the steady rhythm of medical machines filled the silence.

Beep… beep… beep.

Soren Vale lay awake on the narrow hospital bed, staring up at the ceiling.

He had been awake for a while now.

Sleep had come and gone in restless fragments throughout the night. Every time he closed his eyes, pieces of memory resurfaced—memories that didn't belong to an ordinary sixteen-year-old boy.

The Immortals.

The cosmic void.

The thrones.

The betrayal.

Sixteen years of human life and countless ages of immortal existence now shared space in his mind.

It was… disorienting.

Soren slowly raised one hand into the air and flexed his fingers.

His body still hurt. A deep ache ran through his ribs whenever he shifted too quickly. Thick bandages wrapped around his side where the metal fragment had been. Bruises spread across his arms and shoulders in fading shades of purple and yellow.

Human.

Weak.

Fragile.

The contrast between this body and the one he had once possessed was almost laughable.

Once, Sorenth had existed as a being of pure cosmic authority. His power could reshape matter, bend time, and rewrite the fate of civilizations with a single perfectly balanced exchange.

Now?

He was a teenager in a hospital bed.

But he was alive.

And that meant the rebuilding could begin.

Soren exhaled quietly.

"Alright," he murmured.

Show status.

The system responded instantly.

A translucent silver panel appeared in front of his eyes, hovering just above his chest like a holographic display layered over reality.

Name: Sorenth

Current Identity: Soren Vale

Race: Human Vessel

Age: 16

Level: 1

Immortal Life Source: 1

Skill Points: 0

Authority: Minor

Soren studied the panel carefully.

The interface was exactly the same as it had been the night before—clean, minimal, and glowing faintly with silver light.

It was both familiar and strange.

Once, the system had been an extension of his own authority. It had existed as a natural function of his domain.

Now it felt more like a tool.

A guide.

A reminder of what he had lost.

His eyes moved across the side of the interface where several menu tabs floated quietly.

Soren focused on the first option.

Attributes

The panel shifted smoothly, revealing a list of numerical values.

Strength: 5

Agility: 6

Vitality: 5

Perception: 7

Intelligence: 8

Influence: 6

Soren frowned slightly.

For a human teenager, these numbers were probably decent. He had trained in martial arts at the academy for years, and his body was reasonably fit.

But compared to his former self…

They were insignificant.

Once, strength had not been measured in numbers.

Once, he could trade the gravity of a star for the power to break worlds.

Now he struggled to sit up without pain.

He dismissed the screen.

Next.

Abilities.

The interface responded immediately.

Abilities

Passive

Value Sense- Value Sense allows user to instinctively perceive the relative value of objects, materials, and opportunities around him. When focusing on a target, the system displays a basic value tier through a small text window. This ability does not reveal detailed properties or exchange options, only the object's general worth within the laws of Equivalent Exchange.

Active

Equivalent Exchange (Limited)- Core ability and Domain of user

Equivalent Exchange allows user to trade one form of value for another as long as the exchange remains balanced. Value may take many forms, including objects, energy, information, favors, or other resources. The system calculates whether a trade meets the requirements of balance before allowing the exchange. Successfully completed exchanges generate Immortal Life Source and contribute to users growth.

Soren stared at the list.

There it was.

The foundation of his power.

Equivalent Exchange.

The law that governed his entire existence.

Even in this weakened state, the system recognized it as his core ability.

But the restrictions were obvious.

The other immortals had sealed most of his authority during the Severance Exchange.

Soren closed his eyes briefly.

He pushed the thought aside and opened another menu.

Inventory.

Inventory

Slots Available: 10

Current Items: None

Empty.

Not surprising.

After reincarnating as a human, he had started with absolutely nothing.

No artifacts.

No divine relics.

No stored power.

Just a fragile human body and a sealed system.

Still…

Ten slots would be useful eventually.

He closed the inventory and opened the next option.

Exchange Log.

Exchange Log

Trade #001

Steel Fragment → Life Energy

Reward: +1 Immortal Life Source

Soren stared at the entry.

His first trade since reincarnation.

It had been small.

Desperate.

But it had saved his life.

Which meant something important.

Even weakened… the law of exchange still obeyed him.

A quiet smile formed on his face.

Then he opened the final menu.

Quests.

The panel shifted again.

Quests

Mortal Quest

Survive

Description:

Recover from near-death and stabilize your condition.

Reward: Unknown

Status: In Progress

Soren blinked.

"In progress?"

He looked down at his bandaged torso.

The doctors had stabilized him. The worst of his injuries had already been treated.

Which meant—

A soft chime echoed inside his mind.

The interface flickered.

Mortal Quest Updated

Condition Met: Stabilized Vital Signs

The system paused for a moment before new text appeared.

Quest Completed

Reward Processing…

Soren sat up slightly.

"Reward?" he muttered.

A brief flash of silver light ran across the interface.

Rewards Granted

+5 Skill Points

Ability Unlocked: Value Appraisal.

Soren's eyes widened slightly.

His status panel updated instantly.

Skill Points: 5

He leaned back slowly against the pillow.

That wasnt what he expected.

The interface chimed again.

New abiltiy Unlocked

Value Appraisal

Description:

Active Ability

Value Appraisal performs a detailed analysis of an object or exchange opportunity. When activated, the system provides information about the target's value tier, potential trade uses, and possible exchange outcomes. This ability is often used after Value Sense detects something noteworthy, allowing Sorenth to determine how an item may be utilized within an exchange.

Soren chuckled softly.

"This could be useful."

If Value Sense let him check a targets value, Value Appraisal seemed to function like a constant radar for potential trade value.

That alone would make rebuilding his power far easier.

He dismissed the interface again and stared toward the hospital window.

Outside, Ironhaven's skyline rose through the thinning clouds.

Tall towers.

Neon lights.

Crowded streets.

A city fueled by money, information, and power struggles.

In other words…

A city built entirely on value.

Which made it the perfect place for the Immortal of Equivalent Exchange to begin again.

The other Immortals believed Sorenth had vanished from existence.

The Daemons were spreading influence across the universe.

And here he was.

A sixteen-year-old human.

With 1 point of Immortal Life Source.

It wasn't much.

But it was enough to start.

Soren Vale closed his eyes briefly.

Because today marked the true beginning of something the other Immortals had never anticipated.

Sorenth was rebuilding.

And this time…

He would rise from the shadows.
