Chapter 9 - The Hidden Economy

Morning in Ironhaven came with the low hum of traffic and the distant murmur of the city already awake.

Soren stood on the small balcony outside the apartment, leaning lightly against the railing as he looked down at the street three floors below. People moved along the sidewalks, vehicles flowed steadily through the intersections, and somewhere nearby a street vendor was already shouting about fresh breakfast wraps.

It looked like an ordinary morning.

But Soren knew better.

The night before he had completed his second exchange. The system had rewarded him with more Immortal Life Source and two attribute points. The changes were subtle, but he could feel them in the way his body moved.

His grip on the railing tightened slightly.

Strength: 6

Agility: 7

The improvement wasn't dramatic, but it was enough that he noticed it.

His body felt lighter.

More responsive.

More capable.

And the number that mattered most still floated quietly in the corner of his mind.

Immortal Life Source: 4

Not much.

But more than he had possessed two days ago.

He exhaled slowly and straightened.

Inside the apartment he could hear Lucas arguing with Mira about something involving breakfast and the proper use of the toaster.

The familiar chaos of home life continued.

But Sorenth's mind was already focused elsewhere.

Ironhaven was a city built on value.

And if he wanted to rebuild his power, he needed to find places where value moved freely.

Places where trades happened constantly.

Places where deals were made.

A knock suddenly echoed from the apartment door.

Lucas shouted from the kitchen.

"Someone get that!"

Mira replied without looking up from her book.

"You're closer."

"I'm cooking!"

"You're burning toast."

Soren walked inside before their argument escalated further.

"I've got it."

He opened the door.

A familiar grin greeted him immediately.

"Morning."

Kaedin Voss leaned casually against the hallway wall outside the apartment, hands stuffed into the pockets of his academy jacket.

Soren blinked.

"Kaedin?"

"You look surprised."

"I am."

Kaedin pushed himself off the wall and stepped inside.

His appearance hadn't changed much since the last time Soren had seen him at the academy a week earlier.

dark brown hair slicked back with hair gel.

Bright hazel eyes that constantly looked like they were searching for something interesting.

A lean build that suggested someone who trained often but didn't obsess over it.

He carried the restless energy of someone who was always curious about the world.

Lucas appeared around the corner from the kitchen.

"Oh great," he said. "You're here."

Kaedin grinned.

"You say that like it's a bad thing."

"You ate half our snacks last time."

"That was research."

Lucas rolled his eyes and returned to the kitchen.

Kaedin turned back to Soren.

"So," he said. "You alive again?"

"Last I checked."

"Good."

Kaedin studied him for a moment.

"You look better."

"Hospital beds are overrated."

Kaedin nodded.

"Agreed."

Then his grin returned.

"Which is good, because I came to steal you."

Soren raised an eyebrow.

"Steal me?"

"Yep."

"For what?"

Kaedin leaned slightly closer.

"I found something."

That alone caught Soren's attention.

Kaedin was the kind of person who constantly chased rumors and odd discoveries around Ironhaven. Half of them turned out to be nothing.

But the other half…

"Found what?" Soren asked.

Kaedin's grin widened.

"A marketplace."

Soren crossed his arms.

"There are markets everywhere in Ironhaven."

"Not like this one."

Kaedin lowered his voice slightly.

"This one's underground."

Now Soren was listening.

Kaedin continued.

"I stumbled onto it last week while chasing a rumor about illegal training gear."

Lucas reappeared from the kitchen, holding a piece of slightly burned toast.

"Illegal gear?"

"Relax," Kaedin said. "I didn't buy anything."

"You couldn't afford it," Lucas muttered.

Kaedin ignored him.

He turned back to Soren.

"This place isn't normal."

"How so?"

Kaedin tilted his head.

"People aren't just selling stuff."

Soren's curiosity sharpened.

"What are they selling?"

Kaedin smiled.

"Deals."

That word alone was enough.

Something deep inside Sorenth's mind stirred.

Deals.

Trades.

Value.

Kaedin continued talking.

"Information. Favors. Equipment. Training manuals. Even weird stuff I couldn't identify."

Soren activated Value Sense instinctively as he listened.

Kaedin's value display flickered briefly beside him.

Kaedin Voss

Combat Value: Moderate

Strategic Value: Moderate

Trust Potential: High

Interesting.

Kaedin leaned back casually.

"I figured you'd like it."

"Why?"

Kaedin gave him a look.

"Because you're the only person I know who actually enjoys bargaining with street vendors."

Lucas snorted.

"That's true."

Soren frowned slightly.

"I don't enjoy it."

Kaedin laughed.

"Yes you do."

"You treat every purchase like a negotiation."

Lucas nodded from the kitchen.

"He once talked a guy down twenty credits on a pair of gloves."

"That's because the stitching was terrible."

Kaedin pointed at him.

"See?"

Then his grin returned.

"So I thought…"

He paused dramatically.

"…you might want to see the place."

Soren hesitated for only a moment.

A hidden marketplace where trades happened outside normal systems?

That sounded exactly like the kind of place Sorenth needed to investigate.

"Where is it?" he asked.

Kaedin clapped his hands together.

"Good answer."

Lucas waved his toast at them.

"You two better not get arrested."

Kaedin shrugged.

"No promises."

Mira finally looked up from her book.

"Be careful."

Kaedin saluted her dramatically.

"Always."

Soren grabbed his jacket.

"Let's go."

---

Ironhaven's streets were busy as usual.

People filled the sidewalks. Vendors shouted about their merchandise. Delivery vehicles crawled through narrow lanes between towering buildings.

But Kaedin didn't head toward the usual commercial districts.

Instead, he led Soren deeper into the city.

They passed through older neighborhoods where the buildings leaned closer together and the lights grew dimmer.

Eventually they reached a narrow alley tucked between two crumbling warehouses.

Kaedin stopped.

"This is it."

Soren looked around.

"This looks like a dead end."

Kaedin grinned again.

"That's the point."

He walked to the far end of the alley where a metal door sat half hidden behind a stack of shipping crates.

Two large men stood nearby.

They didn't wear uniforms, but their posture made it obvious they were guards.

One of them stepped forward.

"Business?"

Kaedin reached into his pocket and held up a small coin.

"Entry."

The guard examined the coin briefly before stepping aside.

"Five credits."

Kaedin handed the coin over without complaint.

The guard opened the door.

"Don't cause trouble."

Soren followed Kaedin inside.

The moment he stepped through the doorway, the sound hit him.

Voices.

Dozens of them.

Negotiating.

Arguing.

Trading.

They descended a short staircase that opened into a massive underground chamber.

Stalls filled the space from wall to wall.

Lanterns hung from the ceiling, casting warm light over rows of merchants and customers.

But this wasn't like any market Soren had seen before.

People weren't just selling objects.

They were trading everything.

Information.

Contracts.

Equipment.

Favors.

Deals were being negotiated in every direction.

Soren activated Value Sense instinctively.

The world exploded into silver text.

Rare Combat Manual

Value Tier: Moderate

Encrypted Data Drive

Value Tier: Moderate

Prototype Blade

Value Tier: high

Value moved everywhere in this place.

Kaedin watched his reaction.

"See?" he said. "Told you it was interesting."

Soren nodded slowly.

This wasn't just a market.

It was an ecosystem of value.

A place where Sorenth's abilities could thrive.

He walked deeper into the marketplace, observing stall after stall.

Weapons.

Information brokers.

Collectors.

Dealmakers.

Everywhere he looked, exchanges were happening.

And every exchange generated value.

Then something caught his attention.

At a quiet stall near the far wall sat a merchant displaying several unusual artifacts.

Most were small trinkets or old relics.

But one item stood out immediately.

A book.

Thick.

Bound in dark metal corners.

The moment Soren's eyes landed on it, Value Sense reacted violently.

Silver text exploded into existence.

Unknown Artifact Detected

Value Tier: Extremely high

Soren's heart skipped.

He stepped closer.

The book's cover bore a symbol he knew better than anything in the universe.

A scale.

Perfectly balanced.

And beneath it, engraved into the surface, were words he had not seen in sixteen years.

The Ledger of Balance.

One of Sorenth's lost artifacts.

Soren stared at it.

Completely still.

Behind him, Kaedin spoke.

"So… interesting place, right?"

Soren didn't answer.

Because the game had just changed.
