Chapter 84 - Chapter 84: The One They Were Meant to Face

No one moved.

Not Edrin.

Not Lyra.

Not even Ronan.

Because for the first time—

The danger wasn't aimed at them.

It was aimed at the echoes.

"…That's new," Edrin whispered.

Ronan grinned.

"About time something ignored you."

"…I don't feel better about that."

Kael's voice was low.

"…Do not assume you are safe."

Edrin nodded.

"…I wasn't planning to."

Ahead—

The figure stood still.

Clear.

Defined.

Not shifting.

Not incomplete.

Unlike anything else they had seen—

It knew exactly what it was.

Edrin frowned.

"…I don't like that."

Lyra's eyes were locked on it.

"…It's not reacting to us at all."

Edrin swallowed.

"…Yeah."

A pause.

"…It's reacting to them."

The echoes—

Still behind him—

Didn't move.

Didn't step forward.

Didn't retreat.

But they weren't following anymore.

They were facing it.

Edrin felt it immediately.

The connection—

Strained.

Not breaking.

But pulling.

"…Hey," he said quietly.

"…Don't do anything."

No response.

Not from the figure.

Not from the echoes.

Kael stepped slightly forward.

"…This is not your confrontation."

Edrin blinked.

"…What?"

Lyra nodded slowly.

"…They were always tied to this place."

Edrin looked back at them.

"…Yeah."

A pause.

"…But they've been with us."

Ronan crossed his arms.

"…Maybe that wasn't the point."

Silence.

Edrin's chest tightened.

"…You're saying—"

Kael finished it.

"…They must face what remains."

Edrin frowned.

"…Face what?"

The figure ahead—

Moved.

Just one step.

And the ground—

Didn't shift.

Didn't react.

It accepted it completely.

Edrin's breath caught.

"…That's not like us."

Lyra whispered,

"…No."

The echoes flickered.

Not fading.

Not breaking.

Reacting.

Edrin felt the pull again.

Stronger now.

"…They're being drawn to it."

Ronan smirked.

"Or they're choosing to go."

Edrin snapped,

"They don't get to just leave!"

Silence.

The words hung there.

And for a moment—

Everything stopped.

Lyra looked at him.

Softly.

"…Edrin."

He didn't look at her.

"…They stayed because of me."

A pause.

"…I'm not letting something take them."

Kael's voice was calm.

"…You do not control them."

Edrin clenched his fists.

"…I'm not trying to control them."

A breath.

"…I'm trying to keep them."

Silence.

The figure ahead took another step.

And this time—

The echoes responded.

One step forward.

Not together.

Not perfectly.

But willingly.

Edrin froze.

"…No."

The connection tightened—

Then loosened.

Not breaking—

But changing.

Lyra stepped beside him.

"…Edrin…"

"…They're leaving."

Ronan tilted his head.

"…Or they're moving on."

"…That's the same thing!"

Kael shook his head.

"…No."

Edrin looked at him.

"…Explain."

Kael's gaze remained on the figure.

"…They are not yours to lose."

Silence.

Edrin's chest tightened.

"…I know that."

A pause.

"…But they're still—"

He stopped.

Because he didn't have the right word.

Not allies.

Not friends.

Not exactly.

But they mattered.

And that was enough.

The echoes stepped forward again.

Closer to the figure.

Clearer than ever.

Edrin felt it.

That connection—

Not disappearing—

But stretching.

Transforming.

"…They're not fading," he whispered.

Lyra nodded.

"…No."

"…They're becoming something else."

Ronan smirked.

"Finally."

Edrin shot him a look.

"…Can you not?"

"Just saying."

The figure stopped moving.

The echoes stopped too.

Facing it.

Standing before it.

Edrin swallowed.

"…What is that thing?"

Kael answered.

"…Resolution."

Silence.

Lyra whispered,

"…What they were meant to become."

Edrin's breath caught.

"…So if they reach it—"

He didn't finish.

He didn't need to.

Because they all understood.

The echoes wouldn't come back.

Not as they were.

Not following.

Not lingering.

Ronan crossed his arms.

"…So what do we do?"

Edrin didn't answer immediately.

Because this time—

There wasn't something to fight.

There wasn't something to stop.

There wasn't something to resist.

There was only—

A choice.

He looked at the echoes.

At the figures that had followed them this far.

That had held on.

That had almost disappeared—

But didn't.

Because of him.

"…If I stop them…"

A pause.

"…They stay like this."

Lyra nodded softly.

"…Yes."

Edrin looked ahead.

At the figure.

At what waited for them.

"…And if I don't…"

Kael answered.

"…They move forward."

Silence.

Edrin clenched his fists.

"…I don't like this."

Ronan smirked.

"Of course you don't."

Edrin exhaled slowly.

"…No new rule this time."

A pause.

"…Just a choice."

Lyra placed a hand on his arm.

"…You already know."

Edrin looked at her.

"…Yeah."

A breath.

"…I do."

He stepped forward—

Just one step.

The echoes didn't follow.

They didn't need to.

Edrin smiled faintly.

"…Go."

Silence.

Then—

They moved.

All of them.

Forward.

Toward the figure.

Not pulled.

Not forced.

Choosing.

Edrin watched.

Didn't stop them.

Didn't reach out.

Even though he wanted to.

"…You better not disappear," he muttered.

Ronan chuckled.

"Pretty sure that's exactly what they're doing."

"…Shut up."

Lyra smiled softly.

"…They're not disappearing."

Edrin nodded.

"…Yeah."

A pause.

"…They're finishing."

The echoes stepped closer—

And the figure—

Waited.

For them.

Not for Edrin.

Not for anyone else.

Just—

Them.

And as they reached it—

The world held its breath.
