Chapter 83 - Chapter 83: The Step That Carries Others

They adjusted quickly.

Not perfectly—

But enough to survive.

Each step became deliberate.

Each movement—

A choice.

And slowly—

The path stopped fighting as much.

"…Okay," Edrin said, breathing steadily. "…I think I get it now."

Ronan glanced at him.

"You say that a lot."

"This time I mean it."

"You always mean it."

"…That's fair."

Lyra walked beside him, careful but calmer than before.

"…You're stabilizing it."

Edrin blinked.

"…I am?"

Kael answered from ahead.

"…Your intent influences the structure."

Edrin frowned.

"…So this whole place is basically reacting to my decisions."

Ronan smirked.

"Then we're doomed."

"I hate you."

The echoes followed closer still.

So close now—

Edrin could almost feel them.

Not touching.

But near.

Watching.

Matching.

Edrin slowed slightly.

"…Wait."

Lyra looked at him.

"…What is it?"

Edrin glanced back.

"…They're not just following."

The echoes stepped forward—

Mirroring him.

Not perfectly.

Not exactly.

But close.

Edrin's eyes widened.

"…They're copying me."

Ronan tilted his head.

"…That's new."

Kael stopped.

Turning slightly.

"…Demonstrate."

Edrin frowned.

"…What?"

"…Move intentionally."

Edrin sighed.

"…Alright."

He took a careful step forward.

Focused.

Deliberate.

Behind him—

The echoes did the same.

One step.

Stable.

Synchronized.

Edrin blinked.

"…Okay."

Another step.

Same result.

No hesitation.

No delay.

Lyra's voice softened.

"…They're anchoring themselves through you."

Edrin frowned.

"…That sounds important."

Kael nodded.

"…It is."

Ronan crossed his arms.

"…So what, you're their guide now?"

Edrin hesitated.

"…I didn't sign up for that."

Lyra smiled faintly.

"…You didn't sign up for any of this."

"…That's true."

Edrin looked at the path again.

Then back at the echoes.

Then forward.

"…So if I mess up…"

Ronan smirked.

"They fall too."

"…That's not reassuring."

Kael spoke calmly.

"…Then do not fail."

Edrin stared at him.

"…You really don't help."

"No."

"…Consistent."

Edrin exhaled slowly.

Then straightened slightly.

"…Alright."

A pause.

"…No pressure."

He stepped forward again—

Carefully.

Deliberately.

And the echoes followed.

Perfectly.

Step for step.

The path shifted—

But held.

Edrin nodded slowly.

"…Okay."

A pause.

"…I can work with this."

Lyra watched him closely.

"…You're not just stabilizing yourself anymore."

Edrin blinked.

"…What do you mean?"

"…You're stabilizing them."

Silence.

Edrin looked back again.

At the figures that had once been fading—

Breaking—

Lost.

Now—

Clearer.

More present.

More… real.

"…I didn't fix them."

Lyra shook her head gently.

"…No."

A pause.

"…You gave them something to follow."

Edrin swallowed.

"…That feels like a lot."

Ronan grinned.

"Better than running away, right?"

"…I still prefer running."

Kael moved forward again.

"…Continue."

Edrin nodded.

"…Yeah."

He stepped forward.

Again.

And again.

Each step—

Intentional.

Each movement—

Clear.

And behind him—

The echoes moved as one.

No longer lost.

No longer fading.

Not fully whole—

But no longer breaking.

Edrin felt it.

That connection again.

Not as strong as before.

Not as clear.

But there.

"…They're still with me."

Lyra nodded.

"Yes."

Edrin smiled faintly.

"…Good."

The path twisted once more—

But this time—

It didn't collapse.

It didn't reject.

It didn't fight.

It adjusted.

Accepting their presence.

Edrin frowned.

"…That's new."

Kael's voice was steady.

"…You have aligned with it."

Edrin blinked.

"…I did?"

"Yes."

"…Huh."

Ronan laughed.

"Look at that. You're finally doing something right."

"I was always doing something right!"

"…Debatable."

Edrin ignored him.

He looked ahead.

The path—

Still unstable—

Still shifting—

But no longer resisting.

"…I think we're getting somewhere."

Lyra's expression grew more serious.

"…Yes."

Edrin blinked.

"…Why do you sound like that's a bad thing?"

She didn't answer immediately.

Because ahead—

Something changed.

Again.

But not the path.

Not the ground.

Not the sky.

The echoes.

They stopped.

All at once.

Edrin froze.

"…What?"

He turned.

"…Why did they—"

And then he saw it.

They weren't just following anymore.

They were—

Looking past him.

Edrin slowly turned back.

And his breath caught.

"…Oh."

Ahead—

Something stood.

Not like before.

Not watching.

Not waiting.

Not incomplete.

Defined.

Clear.

Present.

And unlike anything they had faced so far—

It was not reacting to Edrin.

It was looking at the echoes.

And the echoes—

Were looking back.

Lyra's voice dropped to a whisper.

"…That's not for us."

Kael's grip tightened slightly.

"…No."

Ronan smirked.

"…Finally."

Edrin swallowed.

"…I don't think I like where this is going."

Because whatever stood ahead—

Wasn't interested in him.

For the first time—

It wanted something else.
