Chapter 79 - Chapter 79: The Place That Knows Him

Edrin didn't move.

Not because he was afraid—

(he was)

But because something about the room—

Felt like it was waiting for him to understand it.

"…I don't like this," he said quietly.

Ronan stepped in behind him.

"You don't like anything."

"This is different."

Lyra entered more cautiously, her eyes scanning every detail.

"…It's not reacting to us."

Edrin nodded slowly.

"…No."

A pause.

"…It's reacting to me."

Silence.

Kael stepped inside last, the door closing behind him without a sound.

"…Explain."

Edrin didn't answer immediately.

Because he wasn't sure how.

He just… felt it.

The walls.

The light.

The stillness.

It wasn't observing all of them.

It was focused.

On him.

"…It feels familiar," he said.

Ronan frowned.

"…You said that."

"…Yeah."

A pause.

"…But now it feels like it remembers me."

Lyra's expression tightened slightly.

"…That shouldn't be possible."

Edrin gave a weak laugh.

"…Nothing here should be possible."

He took a slow step forward.

The room didn't change.

Didn't shift.

But something—

Acknowledged it.

Subtle.

Almost nothing.

But enough.

Edrin swallowed.

"…See?"

Lyra followed closely.

"…I felt that."

Ronan crossed his arms.

"…I didn't."

Kael's voice was quiet.

"…It is selective."

Edrin nodded.

"…Yeah."

He walked further in.

Each step careful.

Measured.

"…This isn't like the others."

No pressure.

No force.

No attempt to fix or erase.

Just…

Presence.

"…It's not trying to do anything."

Lyra frowned.

"…That might not be true."

Edrin stopped.

"…What do you mean?"

She looked around.

"…It might already be doing something."

Silence.

Edrin's chest tightened slightly.

"…I don't like that."

Ronan smirked.

"You're consistent."

Edrin ignored him.

"…What is it doing?"

Kael answered.

"…Observing."

Edrin shook his head.

"…No."

A pause.

"…That's not it."

He looked around again.

Trying to understand the feeling.

"…It's not watching."

Another breath.

"…It's waiting."

Lyra's eyes widened slightly.

"…For what?"

Edrin didn't answer.

Because—

He already knew.

"…For me."

Silence.

Ronan frowned.

"…That's not ominous at all."

Edrin sighed.

"…Yeah."

He stepped forward again—

Deeper into the room.

And then—

He saw it.

"…Oh."

At the center of the room—

There was something.

Not a person.

Not a figure.

A shape.

Still.

Defined.

But not fully clear.

Like something that existed—

But hadn't decided what it was yet.

Edrin stopped.

"…That's new."

Lyra moved beside him.

"…What is that?"

Kael's gaze sharpened.

"…Unformed."

Ronan tilted his head.

"…Looks like it's waiting for instructions."

Edrin swallowed.

"…That's not funny."

"It wasn't a joke."

The shape didn't move.

Didn't react.

But it was—

Focused.

On Edrin.

Edrin felt it immediately.

"…Yeah."

A pause.

"…Definitely me."

Lyra stepped slightly in front of him.

"…Be careful."

"I am careful!"

"…You're not."

"…Okay, I'm trying."

He took another step forward.

The shape didn't change.

Didn't shift.

But the feeling—

Intensified.

Edrin's breath slowed.

"…It's not dangerous."

Ronan blinked.

"…You sure about that?"

"…No."

A pause.

"…But it doesn't feel like the others."

Lyra studied it carefully.

"…It's not hostile."

Kael added,

"…But it is incomplete."

Edrin nodded slowly.

"…Yeah."

A breath.

"…Like it's waiting to become something."

Silence.

Ronan smirked.

"…And it picked you?"

Edrin grimaced.

"…I hate that idea."

Lyra looked at him.

"…Edrin."

"…Yeah?"

"…What if it didn't pick you?"

A pause.

"…What if you're the one deciding what it becomes?"

Silence.

Edrin froze.

"…No."

A pause.

"…No, I don't like that at all."

The shape flickered slightly.

Not changing—

But responding.

Edrin's heart skipped.

"…It reacted."

Kael nodded.

"…Yes."

Lyra's voice was soft.

"…Edrin… this place…"

A pause.

"…It might not remember you."

Edrin swallowed.

"…Then what is it doing?"

Lyra met his eyes.

"…It might be reflecting you."

Silence.

Ronan raised an eyebrow.

"…That's worse."

Edrin laughed weakly.

"…Way worse."

He looked back at the shape.

Still waiting.

Still unformed.

Still focused.

"…So if I think it's dangerous…"

Ronan grinned.

"Then it might be."

"…Great."

Edrin exhaled slowly.

"…No pressure."

The shape remained still.

But the room—

Felt like it was holding its breath.

Waiting.

For him.

To decide.

Edrin clenched his fists slightly.

"…I'm not good at decisions."

Ronan smirked.

"Then make a bad one. It's your specialty."

Lyra shook her head.

"…Not this time."

Kael spoke quietly.

"…Choose carefully."

Edrin stared at the shape.

At the thing that wasn't anything yet.

At the place that knew him—

Or reflected him.

And for the first time—

He realized—

This wasn't a fight.

This wasn't something to resist.

This was something else.

Something far more dangerous.

"…I have to choose what this becomes," he whispered.

And the room—

Waited.
