Chapter 78 - Chapter 78: The Door That Was Never Broken

They reached it.

Up close—

It was even worse.

"…It's perfect," Edrin whispered.

No cracks.

No fractures.

No signs of damage.

Not even dust.

In a world that had fallen apart—

This place remained untouched.

Ronan ran a hand along the surface.

"…Feels real."

Edrin frowned.

"…Everything here feels real."

"Yeah," Ronan said. "…but this doesn't feel wrong."

Edrin stepped closer.

"…That's what makes it wrong."

Lyra stood beside him, eyes scanning every detail.

"…There's no distortion."

Kael added quietly,

"…No interference."

Edrin blinked.

"…So it's just… normal?"

Silence.

No one answered.

Because nothing here was ever just anything.

The door stood before them.

Closed.

Unmarked.

Plain.

Edrin stared at it.

"…I don't want to open that."

Ronan grinned.

"Then it's definitely what we need to open."

"I hate how that logic works."

Lyra raised her hand slightly.

"…Wait."

They paused.

She stepped closer to the door—

Not touching it yet—

Just observing.

"…It's not resisting."

Edrin blinked.

"…What?"

"There's no barrier," she said.

"No magic holding it shut."

Kael nodded.

"…It is not locked."

Edrin frowned.

"…That's worse."

Ronan chuckled.

"Everything is worse with you."

"Yes, because everything is worse!"

Edrin looked back at the echoes.

They hadn't moved.

Still watching.

Still distant.

"…They're not coming in."

Lyra nodded.

"…No."

Edrin swallowed.

"…Then whatever's inside…"

A pause.

"…It's not for them."

Kael stepped forward.

"…Correct."

Edrin sighed.

"…Of course it isn't."

He turned back to the door.

Stared at it.

"…Okay."

A breath.

"…We open it."

Ronan grinned.

"Finally."

Edrin raised a hand—

Hesitated—

Then stopped.

"…Wait."

Lyra looked at him.

"…What is it?"

Edrin frowned.

"…Something's off."

Ronan rolled his eyes.

"Everything is off."

"No, I mean—"

Edrin stepped closer.

Hand hovering near the door.

"…This place didn't survive by accident."

Silence.

Kael's voice was low.

"…Agreed."

Edrin swallowed.

"…So why is it still here?"

Lyra answered softly.

"…Because something inside it remained."

Edrin's chest tightened slightly.

"…Like the one who stayed."

Kael nodded.

"…Yes."

Ronan smirked.

"…Then let's meet it."

Edrin exhaled slowly.

"…Yeah."

A pause.

"…Let's not regret this immediately."

Ronan laughed.

"No promises."

Edrin placed his hand on the door.

It felt—

Warm.

Not cold like everything else.

Not empty.

Present.

Edrin froze.

"…That's new."

Lyra noticed.

"…What is it?"

"…It's warm."

Silence.

Kael stepped closer.

"…Then something within is active."

Edrin nodded slowly.

"…Yeah."

A pause.

"…I really don't like that."

Ronan grinned.

"Too late now."

Edrin sighed.

"…Yeah."

He tightened his grip.

"…New rule."

Ronan groaned.

"Of course."

Edrin smirked faintly.

"…If something feels safe…"

A pause.

"…Be twice as careful."

Lyra nodded.

"…Agreed."

Kael didn't object.

Ronan shrugged.

"Fair enough."

Edrin took a breath.

Then—

Pushed the door open.

It didn't resist.

Didn't creak.

Didn't make a sound.

It simply—

Opened.

And inside—

There was light.

Not bright.

Not blinding.

Soft.

Steady.

Real.

Edrin froze at the threshold.

"…Okay."

A pause.

"…That's new."

Lyra stepped beside him.

"…It's… intact."

Ronan leaned forward.

"…And not trying to kill us."

Edrin frowned.

"…Yet."

Kael moved slightly ahead.

"…We proceed."

Edrin hesitated—

Then stepped inside.

And the moment he did—

He felt it.

Not pressure.

Not absence.

Not correction.

Something else.

Something familiar.

His breath caught.

"…Wait."

Lyra turned to him.

"…What is it?"

Edrin looked around slowly.

At the walls.

The floor.

The light.

"…I've been here before."

Silence.

Ronan blinked.

"…No you haven't."

Edrin shook his head.

"…No."

A pause.

"…But it feels like I have."

Lyra's expression shifted.

"…Memory?"

Kael's gaze sharpened.

"…Or something deeper."

Edrin swallowed.

"…I don't know."

But something inside him—

The part that had remained—

The part that refused to disappear—

Recognized this place.

And that—

Was more terrifying than anything else.
