Chapter 33 - Chapter 33

The ration line stretched farther than it had the day before. Not by much. Just enough that people noticed.

Kael stood at the edge of the distribution hall, watching the slow shuffle forward. The air was warm from bodies packed too close together, the smell of recycled air layered with sweat and disinfectant. A child cried somewhere near the front, the sound thin and sharp against the low murmur of voices.

Juno joined him, helmet under her arm. "Southern supply convoy didn't arrive."

Kael didn't look away from the line. "Delayed?"

"Diverted," she said. "Iron Veil rerouted it for inspection."

Mira approached from the opposite side, tablet already in hand. "They're calling it a safety review."

Kael nodded once. "How long?"

"They didn't say," Mira replied. "But they're holding medical shipments too."

A man near the line raised his voice. "We've been standing here for hours."

A guard responded quietly, trying to calm him. The man's shoulders sagged, anger draining into exhaustion.

Kael turned away. "Redistribute from hub two."

Juno frowned. "That'll leave them short."

"It'll keep this line moving," Kael said.

Mira's fingers tightened around her tablet. "Iron Veil knows exactly what they're doing."

"They're applying pressure without crossing a line," Kael said. "Same thing we do."

Mira looked at him. "That doesn't make it acceptable."

Kael met her gaze. "It makes it predictable."

They moved deeper into the hall. The Law's presence was subtle here, a faint pressure that kept the line orderly, voices low. People complied without being told. That worried Kael more than open defiance would have.

A logistics officer hurried toward them, face flushed. "Commander. Hub six is reporting shortages. They're asking for exemptions."

"From what?" Kael asked.

"Mark-based distribution," the officer said. "They say it's slowing things down."

Juno's jaw tightened. "It's keeping things fair."

Mira shook her head. "It's making people feel categorized."

Kael closed his eyes briefly. The hum of the station pressed in, steady and insistent. "Approve temporary exemptions. Case by case."

The officer hesitated. "That'll create inconsistencies."

"It'll create breathing room," Kael said.

The officer nodded and moved off.

Juno watched him go. "You're loosening the net."

"I'm adjusting it," Kael said.

Mira studied his face. "Iron Veil will see that as weakness."

"They'll see it as uncertainty," Kael replied. "And they'll push harder."

As if summoned by the thought, Kael's comm chimed. He glanced at the display. Another message from Iron Veil. This one longer.

We regret the inconvenience caused by necessary inspections. Stability requires cooperation.

Kael dismissed it without responding.

Across the hall, a woman stepped out of line, pulling a marked man with her. She whispered urgently, eyes darting toward the guards. The man shook his head, gently pulling his arm free before stepping back into place.

Kael felt something twist in his chest.

Mira noticed. "They're starting to self-segregate."

Kael nodded. "The Law doesn't need to enforce it anymore."

Juno's voice was low. "That's dangerous."

"Yes," Kael said. "It is."

They left the hall together, the noise fading behind them. The corridor outside felt cooler, quieter. Too quiet.

Mira broke the silence. "Iron Veil is starving us without firing a shot."

Kael leaned against the wall, feeling the vibration of the station through his back. "They're testing how much pressure we can take before we break."

Juno crossed her arms. "And how much pressure you'll apply to keep us from breaking."

Kael looked down the corridor, at the glyphs glowing faintly along the walls. "I won't let them force our hand."

Mira's voice softened. "Sometimes refusing to move is still a choice."

Kael didn't answer. He was listening to the station, to the way its systems adjusted, compensating for shortages, rerouting flows, tightening margins.

Pressure didn't announce itself.

It accumulated.
