Chapter 37 - Chapter 37

The corridor sealed without warning.

Not violently. Not dramatically. Just a soft hiss as pressure fields slid into place and a neutral tone chimed once—containment active.

The Iron Veil inspection team froze.

Kael watched the feed from the command level, hands resting on the console, expression unreadable.

Mira noticed first. "That wasn't scheduled."

"No," Kael said. "It wasn't."

On the screen, Iron Veil soldiers exchanged glances, then backed away from the sealed junction. No weapons raised. No panic. Just a controlled withdrawal.

Juno leaned forward, eyes sharp. "The Law did that on its own."

Kael nodded once. "It adjusted."

Mira's jaw tightened. "Ironclad will see this as escalation."

"He'll see it as confirmation," Kael replied.

The station hummed, steady and patient, as if nothing had happened.

Three minutes later, the first explosion hit hub nine.

The impact rolled through the structure, deep and heavy, rattling the command level and sending a ripple through the map display. Red flares ignited across multiple hubs almost simultaneously.

Juno was already moving. "Iron Veil strike teams. Coordinated. Nine, twelve, and the outer transit spine."

Kael didn't flinch. "They were waiting for an excuse."

Mira's tablet lit up with cascading alerts. "They're targeting infrastructure. Power relays. Transit junctions. No civilian centers."

"They're framing it as stabilization," Juno said flatly.

As if on cue, the public broadcast activated.

Ironclad appeared on screen, standing in a damaged transit hall, Iron Veil banners unfurled behind him. His armor was pristine. His posture relaxed.

"Residents of the southern network," Ironclad said calmly, "Iron Veil has initiated a stabilization operation. Autonomous systems have begun acting beyond their mandate. We will secure critical infrastructure until responsible governance is restored."

Juno scoffed. "He's calling you irresponsible."

"He's calling me unnecessary," Kael said.

The feed cut.

Another impact shook the station—closer this time.

"Hub twelve reports Iron Veil heavy units advancing," Juno said. "They're pushing toward the central junction."

Mira looked at Kael. "This is the point of no return."

Kael's gaze stayed on the map. "It passed when he decided to move first."

He tapped the console. "Activate coordinated defense."

The Law surged—not explosively, not violently—but with intent. Pressure fields snapped into place across key corridors, redirecting movement, slowing advances, sealing flanks. Iron Veil formations faltered as the environment itself resisted them.

Juno's lips curved into a thin smile. "They didn't plan for this."

"They planned for fear," Kael said. "Not resistance."

Reports flooded in.

Iron Veil units stalled in narrow corridors. Their momentum bled away as Kael's teams moved through familiar routes, guided by subtle corrections only they could feel.

"They're losing cohesion," Mira said quietly.

"They're realizing this territory isn't neutral ground," Kael replied.

A new alert chimed. "Commander. Ironclad is moving."

Kael straightened. "Where?"

"Central transit spine."

Juno didn't hesitate. "He's coming for you."

Kael nodded. "Good."

Mira caught his arm as he turned toward the lift. "Kael—this is what he wanted."

Kael met her gaze, calm and certain. "No. This is what he miscalculated."

The lift descended fast, alarms echoing through the station. When the doors opened, smoke and ozone filled the air. The central spine stretched ahead, scarred by impacts, Iron Veil units locked in tense standoffs across multiple levels.

And at the center—

Ironclad.

He stood alone, helmet off, massive frame relaxed, as if the battle around him was incidental.

Kael stepped forward.

Ironclad smiled.

"So," Ironclad said, voice carrying easily, "your system finally chose a side."

Kael didn't slow. "It chose its home."

Around them, the battle raged—contained, controlled, unmistakably real.

Ironclad's confidence didn't waver.

But for the first time—

It wasn't shared.
