Chapter 30 - Chapter 30

The first shot was not aimed at anyone.

It struck the wall above the southern access ramp, chipping concrete and sending a sharp crack through the corridor. People froze where they stood, hands half‑raised, eyes darting for cover that wasn't there.

Kael was already moving.

Juno's voice cut through the noise over the comm. "Southern approach. Iron Veil unit crossed the boundary."

"How many?" Kael asked, pushing past a cluster of civilians pressed against the wall.

"Six. Light armor. They're holding position."

Kael reached the ramp and slowed, forcing his breathing steady. The air here smelled different. Dust, ozone, the faint metallic tang of discharged energy.

Iron Veil soldiers stood at the far end of the corridor, weapons lowered but ready. Their formation was loose, deliberate. Not an assault. A statement.

One of them stepped forward, helmet off, hands visible. He looked younger than Kael expected. Calm. Almost bored.

"Commander Kael," the man said. "We're here to talk."

Juno arrived at Kael's side, rifle slung but not raised. "You fired inside our territory."

The man nodded. "Warning shot."

Kael studied him. "You crossed a boundary."

"Boundaries change," the man said. "Especially when they're not recognized."

Mira's voice came through the comm, tight. "Kael, sensors show more movement behind them. They're not alone."

Kael kept his eyes on the Iron Veil soldier. "State your purpose."

The man smiled faintly. "Iron Veil is concerned about recent developments. Your enforcement methods. Your expansion. The instability it's causing."

Juno shifted her stance. "You don't get to lecture us about instability."

The man's smile didn't fade. "We get to protect our interests."

Kael stepped forward, stopping just short of the invisible line where the Law's influence thickened. The glyphs along the corridor brightened, responding to proximity.

"You're testing our response," Kael said.

The man inclined his head. "We're establishing contact."

Kael felt the Law press against his awareness, eager, alert. It wanted resolution. It wanted clarity.

He raised a hand, slow and deliberate. The glyphs dimmed.

"Contact established," Kael said. "Now leave."

The man glanced back at his unit, then returned his gaze to Kael. "Not yet."

Behind Kael, a civilian gasped as another Iron Veil soldier shifted position, weapon angling slightly upward. Not aimed. Not safe either.

Juno's voice dropped. "Kael."

Kael didn't look away. "You've made your point."

The man's expression hardened. "Have we?"

Kael felt the weight of the moment settle into his chest. This was not a battle. This was a line being drawn in front of witnesses.

"You're inside our territory," Kael said. "You fired a weapon. You're escalating."

The man shrugged. "So are you. Every day."

Silence stretched. The hum of the station seemed louder here, vibrating through the floor, through Kael's boots.

Mira's voice came again, quieter now. "Kael, people are watching."

He knew.

He took a step forward. The Law surged, not violently, but firmly, pressing against the Iron Veil unit like a wall of pressure. The soldiers stiffened, boots scraping as they adjusted their footing.

The man's eyes widened, just a fraction. "That's new."

Kael held the pressure steady. Not crushing. Not threatening. Just present.

"You've made contact," Kael said. "Now withdraw."

For a moment, Kael thought the man would push it further.

Then the man raised a hand. "Fall back."

The Iron Veil unit retreated in unison, steps measured, eyes never leaving Kael. When they crossed the boundary, the pressure eased. The glyphs dimmed.

The corridor exhaled.

Juno let out a breath she'd been holding. "They wanted to see how far you'd go."

Kael nodded. "And now they know."

Mira arrived moments later, face pale. She looked past Kael at the retreating figures. "That wasn't a negotiation."

"No," Kael said. "It was a warning."

Mira's gaze lingered on the corridor wall where the shot had struck. "To who?"

Kael didn't answer.

Around them, civilians began to move again, voices low, hurried. Some glanced at Kael with relief. Others with something closer to unease.

The Law settled back into its rhythms, satisfied for now.

Kael knew better.

Iron Veil had made contact.

And they would not stop at words.
