Chapter 15 - Proposition

The recovery room was small.

Two chairs.

A table with food no one had touched.

A torch on the wall giving enough light to see but not enough to make the space feel comfortable.

Kai approached Serah.

"Hey."

Serah was staring at the wall.

Kai reached his hand toward her shoulder.

What followed was fast — a lateral slap, automatic, with the force of a fully unlocked SSS entity that hadn't calculated the recipient.

Kai felt the impact across the first three knuckles of his right hand before his brain finished processing what had happened.

He looked at his hand.

The knuckles were red. Nothing broken, but it had been close.

Serah looked at him. Saw the hand.

Something crossed her expression — not exactly guilt, but close.

"Don't touch me," she said.

"I noticed."

Silence.

"Are you okay?" Kai asked.

"I'm perfectly fine."

"Your aura says otherwise."

Serah's silver markings pulsed at an irregular rhythm — not combat rhythm, not calm rhythm.

Something in between that Kai had learned to read as active processing of something she didn't want to process.

"You wanted to mate with her," Serah said, without taking her eyes off the wall.

Kai looked at her.

"With the android?"

"I saw it in the way you fought. In how you answered her." The markings flared.

"In how you looked at her when she said you were fascinating."

Kai was silent for a moment.

Then he let out a dry chuckle — not mocking, genuine.

"Ah," he said.

"So that's what this is."

---

[GarcíaFTW: "so that's what this is" — KAI GOT IT]

[NocheEterna99: Serah's been carrying this since the fight]

[StreamerHunter: viewers: 500,000. Everyone is silent.]

[xSorinx: Kai has an expression I haven't seen before. Not his combat face. Not his analysis face.]

---

Kai crouched down until he was at her eye level — Serah was still staring at the wall, so he had to adjust the angle until she couldn't ignore him.

"Serah."

She glanced at him sideways.

"I didn't want to mate with the android."

"Her aura was compatible with—"

"I didn't want to mate with the android," Kai repeated.

No added emphasis.

No drama.

Serah closed her mouth.

Kai stayed in that position for a moment.

Then he knelt completely — one knee on the floor, his good hand resting on the other knee.

Serah looked down at him with an expression she didn't know how to classify.

"What are you doing?"

"Talking to you seriously." Kai looked up at her.

"I don't know how I got here. I don't know how my life in this place will end. I still don't know a lot of things about Aethon."

Pause.

"But what I understand least," he said, "is how fast you fell in love with me. Or whatever you felt. From the very beginning. Without knowing me."

Serah looked at him for a long moment.

Then she spoke, and her voice had a different tone — more direct, without its usual neutrality.

"Because you're perfect," she said.

"The most fit. I knew it from the moment I sensed your presence in the forest before I saw you." A pause.

"And when I saw you for the first time and you didn't step back... something in me imprinted on you. It wasn't a decision. It was recognition."

"Recognition of what?"

"That you were the only being I'd ever found who wouldn't yield to me." Her markings pulsed softly.

"And that I'd want you to anyway."

---

[NocheEterna99: "something in me imprinted on you"]

[GarcíaFTW: Serah spent 2,300 years looking for something that wouldn't yield to her. And she found a guy who died from a wet floor.]

[StreamerHunter: chat is silent. MILLIONS OF PEOPLE SILENT.]

[xSorinx: this is the most important chapter of the novel. I know it. I feel it.]

---

Kai listened to all of it.

Then he stood up.

"Then," he said, "I should reciprocate that."

Serah looked at him.

"But I'll do it right," Kai said.

"Not because your biology decided it. Because you decided it." A pause.

"And I decide it too."

"What are you deciding?"

"That I'll choose you to be the mother of my first child."

Serah looked at him with an expression she hadn't shown in 2,300 years... Happiness.

"Is it true?"

"Yes."

"Do you swear?"

"Do you swear, do you swear?"

"I swear, I swear."

"Do you swear, do you swear, do you swear?"

"I don't swear to things I don't keep."

Serah's silver markings flared in a way Kai hadn't seen before — not combat eagerness, not jealousy, not analysis.

Something warmer.

More stable.

"But first," Kai said,

"I'm going to make you fall in love for real. Not because instinct decides it."

Serah opened her mouth.

Closed it.

Kai moved closer.

Serah was taller than him — not by much, but enough that the angle required Kai to rise onto his toes and Serah to tilt her head down, which she did, without either of them commenting on it, with the naturalness of something that had been inevitable for a while.

The first kiss was brief.

The second one wasn't.

---

[GarcíaFTW: KAI KISSED HER]

[NocheEterna99: FIRST KISS. LIVE. TWO AND A HALF MILLION VIEWERS.]

[StreamerHunter: I'M SO GLAD I PUT THE FIRST COINS INTO THIS STREAM]

[xSorinx: Serah tilted her head. Kai went on his toes. Neither said anything. THIS IS ART.]

[Deral_Bleattler: I'm crying in chat and I'm not ashamed]

---

The chat was moved for exactly forty-two seconds.

Until they noticed that the kiss hadn't just continued… it had become deeper, hungrier.

Kai's lips were no longer brushing Serah's; they were devouring them with an urgency that made the air between them crackle with electricity.

And that Serah had closed her eyes tightly, surrendering completely, while a low, broken little moan escaped her against his mouth.

And that Kai's hands — those same hands that were always ready to fight or hidden in his pockets — were no longer content to be "elsewhere."

They had slid down the curve of her back, firm and possessive, pressing her against his body until there wasn't a single inch of space between them.

His fingers dug into Serah's waist, then rose with deliberate slowness along her ribs, grazing the edge of her clothing as if deciding whether to tear it off or not.

And that Serah had responded to that by arching against him, her nails digging into Kai's shoulders while the silver markings on her skin blazed with almost blinding intensity.

The glow pulsed to the rhythm of her ragged breathing, making the air around them vibrate and spark as if magic itself were aroused.

And that neither of them showed the slightest intention of stopping.

On the contrary.

The kiss turned dirtier, more desperate, with tongues tangling and teeth biting swollen lips, while Kai's hands kept exploring lower, bolder, and Serah's body trembled with pure anticipation.

The chat was no longer moved.

It was on fire.

---

[GarcíaFTW: WAIT]

[NocheEterna99: WAIT WAIT WAIT]

[StreamerHunter: THE KISS WENT FROM ROMANTIC TO SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT IN 42 SECONDS]

[xSorinx: they're using tongue. I SAW IT. I PROCESSED IT.]

[Deral_Bleattler: I'M NO LONGER CRYING FOR THE SAME REASONS]

[New_user_4892: I got to this stream 3 minutes ago someone explain EVERYTHING to me]

[Current viewers: 891,000]

---

Kai pulled away.

Not immediately — with the specific timing of someone finishing something they wanted to finish right.

Serah opened her eyes.

Her markings pulsed at the slowest rhythm Kai had seen — not calm, something deeper than calm.

"Should we get out of here?" Kai said.

Serah looked at him for a moment.

"Already?"

"The dungeon has four more rooms according to the announcer."

"Yes."

"None of them," Kai said, "are more interesting than what just happened."

Serah's markings flared.

"Then we destroy the dungeon," she said, with the same naturalness as someone asking for the check.

"That's what I was thinking."

---

[GarcíaFTW: THEY'RE GOING TO DESTROY THE DUNGEON]

[NocheEterna99: BECAUSE THE KISS WAS MORE INTERESTING THAN THE REMAINING ROOMS]

[StreamerHunter: KAI SAID THAT OUT LOUD WITH TWO AND A HALF MILLION PEOPLE WATCHING]

[xSorinx: Serah didn't hesitate for a second]

---

Serah extended a hand toward the ceiling of the recovery room and let out her primordial aura — not a directed attack, just presence.

The stone walls of the recovery room emitted a low sound, like something that had been under pressure for a long time finally giving way.

Kai was already moving.

He leaped toward the main corridor — the one that connected all the rooms — and used the structure-breaking technique he'd learned against the corrupted bear.

Palm strike to the convergence point of three walls.

The exact angle of the dungeon's structural tension.

The fissure appeared from that point upward, sideways, branching through the stone like something that had always been waiting for a reason to exist.

Serah added primordial ice into the fissures.

The ice expanded as it solidified — basic physics applied on a primordial scale.

The entire dungeon emitted a sound that made the announcer, for the first time in the event, fall silent.

---

In Valdris, central plaza:

Aldric was still at the guild door, looking up.

He'd been doing that since Kai and Serah had jumped into the dungeon four hours ago.

He'd tried to enter the building twice.

Both times he'd decided he still needed to see what happened.

Others had joined him — merchants, off-duty hunters, the owner of Valdris Pot restaurant with his hands on his chest hoping he wouldn't have to feed an SSS entity again, and the guard who'd almost rung the alarm bell on the first day with the same expression.

Everyone was looking up.

When the dungeon began to tremble, no one moved.

When the fissures appeared in the dark stone of the structure and the waterfall that fell from it froze midair before shattering, a few stepped back.

When the entire dungeon began to disintegrate... not collapse, but come undone, from the inside out.

No stone fell.

There was no rubble.

The complete structure turned to glowing dust, and the light particles scattered into the afternoon air above Valdris like something that had been solid and decided to stop being so in an orderly fashion.

And in the center of where the dungeon had been, descending from six hundred feet using the same reverse jumping technique he'd used to ascend, was Kai.

With Serah in his arms.

"Holy shit," several said at once, seeing them both, along with their dreams and hopes.

---

[GarcíaFTW: THE DUNGEON DISINTEGRATED INTO PIXELS]

[NocheEterna99: KAI IS FALLING WITH SERAH IN HIS ARMS]

[xSorinx: Serah has her eyes closed. In the arms of a rankless human. I'm processing.]

[Deral_Bleattler: aldric looks like this is way above his pay grade]

---

Kai landed in the plaza.

Knee on the ground, Serah held steady, the impact absorbed with the weight distribution technique he'd been practicing.

Serah's silver markings glowed soft and steady, at the slowest rhythm Kai had seen.

The plaza was completely silent.

Kai looked up.

Thirty people staring at him.

The north gate guard.

The owner of Valdris Pot.

Aldric with a folder he was no longer taking notes in because he'd forgotten he was holding it.

Kai looked at Serah in his arms.

Serah opened one eye.

"We're here," Kai said.

"I know," Serah said. "I don't want to get down yet."

---

[NocheEterna99: "I don't want to get down yet"]

[GarcíaFTW: SERAH ACTING LIKE A SCHOOLGIRL "I DON'T WANT TO GET DOWN YET."]

[StreamerHunter: I'm getting this moment tattooed somewhere]

[xSorinx: Aldric has the folder in his hand and isn't writing anything. Just staring.]

[Deral_Bleattler: the north gate guard almost didn't let Kai in on the first day. Look at him now.]
