The door was still on the floor when they left.
Jameson walked them to the door—or where it had been before Kai reorganized the architecture—with the coffee cup still in his hand and the expression of someone who has processed the conversation and found the outcome satisfactory.
"You can stay the night if you want," he said. "The village has space. The girls are hospitable."
Serah looked at him.
"No," she said.
"We have to go back to the guild," Kai said. "Explain to Aldric that the quest is a misunderstanding. That there's no real threat."
Jameson nodded slowly.
"I appreciate it," he said.
"Seriously. Not many would have taken the time to listen."
"I haven't done anything yet."
"You listened." Pause. "For someone in my situation, that's already something."
Kai looked at him for a moment.
Nodded once—the brief nod of someone registering data and filing it away—and turned toward the village exit road.
Serah followed him.
---
Jameson watched them walk away from the threshold.
The cup in his hand.
The robe.
The slippers.
And when Kai's figure disappeared among the market stalls and only Serah's back remained visible, Jameson's lips curved.
Not the smile of someone grateful.
The smile of someone whose plan is working out exactly as calculated.
---
[xSorinx: THAT SMILE]
[GarcíaFTW: IT WASN'T GRATITUDE—IT WAS SOMETHING ELSE]
[NocheEterna99: the system told us not to trust that guy. THE SYSTEM WAS RIGHT.]
[StreamerHunter: Kai didn't see it. His back was turned.]
[Pedro_Sierra: ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) something's not right here]
[Deral_Bleattler: RED FLAG]

They walked in silence for the first minute.
The village of Mirfeld around them—the Ferris wheel turning slowly with no one in the gondolas, the booths with their pennants, the carousel music that Kai recognized from some summer long ago in a world that no longer existed for him.
Serah watched him sideways.
"What do you think?" she finally said.
"About what?"
"About all of this. About Jameson. About the village. About A_D_M."
Kai walked two more steps before answering.
"Everything seems fine," he said.
Serah looked directly at him this time.
"That's it?"
"That's how it seems."
"And A_D_M?"
"Something to keep in mind."
"You're not worried?"
"I worry about things when they arrive." Kai looked at the Ferris wheel as they passed.
"A_D_M contacted Jameson three weeks ago. They haven't done anything since. That means they're waiting for something or evaluating something." Pause.
"While they wait, we wait too."
Serah processed this.
"And Jameson?"
"A problem someone created and is trying to solve." Kai kept walking.
"It's not my problem to solve it for him. Just to clarify that the quest is a misunderstanding."
Serah was silent for a moment.
"Do you believe him?"
Kai took his time answering.
"Enough," he said.
Serah noticed it wasn't a yes.
---
[NocheEterna99: "enough" — it's not a full yes. Kai doesn't fully trust him either.]
[GarcíaFTW: but he let it go anyway. Why?]
[StreamerHunter: because the quest was to investigate, not eliminate. Kai did exactly his job.]
[xSorinx: Serah also noticed "enough" wasn't a yes. I saw it in her markings.]
[Pedro_Sierra: ┬─┬ノ( º _ ºノ) Kai setting the table ┻━┻ᕦ(ò_óˇ)ᕤ Serah when A_D_M arrives]

They reached the edge of the village where the dirt road turned back into just forest and distance.
Serah stopped.
"Should we go back now," she said, "or do you want to take a look around first?" She looked at him. "There are things from your world here. It could be... I don't know. Comforting."
Kai stopped too.
Looked at the road.
Then at the village behind them.
Something in his expression changed—not dramatically, not all at once.
"You know what?" Kai said.
Serah waited.
"Wait for me here."
Serah opened her mouth.
"I'm going back to the guild to report to Aldric." Kai was already adjusting his stance—the weight shift that preceded rapid movement.
"When I get back, we can continue with what I promised you."
Serah's markings flared.
"I can go with you."
"Not necessary. It's just a report."
"I can wait for you on the road then."
"Wait for me here." Kai looked at her. "There are things from my world in that village. Take a look around for a while. I won't be long."
Serah looked at him with the expression of someone detecting something that doesn't add up but unable to name it yet.
"I don't want to stay if you're not here."
Kai let out a short sound—not exactly annoyance, but in that direction—and turned toward her.
"Serah."
"What?"
"You're a 2,300-year-old SSS entity." His voice had the specific tone of someone stating what they consider obvious. "You can stay alone in a village for an hour without anything happening."
"That's not it."
"Then what is it?"
Serah didn't answer immediately.
"I don't like it when you're not nearby," she finally said, quieter than usual.
Kai looked at her for a second.
"I know," he said. "But this is about finding a better future for both of us. Okay?"
---
Serah said nothing.
The phrase had unsettled her—not the content, but something in the tone.
Something that didn't quite fit with the way Kai normally said things.
Before she could name it, Kai moved.
At an incredibly fast speed that left a threshold of dust and a rush of air.
Serah had seen him move fast before.
Not like this.
In four seconds Kai was a dot on the road.
In eight he had vanished among the trees.
---
Serah stood still.
The silver markings pulsed.
Not in combat rhythm. Not in jealousy rhythm.
Something different.
Something that resembled when a piece of territory separates from the rest and suddenly the map makes no sense.
He left.
It's just an hour.
I know.
The markings kept pulsing.
But he left.
---
[GarcíaFTW: KAI TOOK OFF AT FULL SPEED]
[NocheEterna99: Serah had never seen him move like that]
[StreamerHunter: "a better future for both of us" — that phrase sounded weird. It didn't sound like Kai.]
[xSorinx: Serah's markings are doing something they hadn't done before]
[Pedro_Sierra: (╥_╥) Serah alone]
[Deral_Bleattler: ←←←←←←←← Kai ←←←←←←← (T_T) Serah →→→→ Jameson →→→→]
[User_7741: I don't like this at all (;´༎ຶ ༎ຶ`)]
[GarcíaFTW: wait. "a better future." That's what the men of the village said when they left.]
[NocheEterna99: ...]
[StreamerHunter: ...]
[xSorinx: THE ENCHANTMENT SYSTEM.]
---
Serah smelled it before she heard it.
Not Kai's scent—that was already dissolving in the direction of the forest with every passing second. Another scent. Closer. More recent.
Something pink at the edge of smell. Not exactly a color, but a quality—warm, soft, the kind that doesn't trigger alertness but the opposite.
Serah's markings pulsed differently.
She turned.
Jameson was three meters away.
No longer holding the cup. No longer wearing the robe exactly—it was the same clothes but something about the way the light hit him had changed. An aura. Pink. Faint but present, wrapping him in layers that weren't aggressive.
Not a threat.
Something harder to handle than a threat.
He was smiling.
Not the smile from before—the malicious one, the one of a plan working. This one was different. Softer. More constructed.
"Everything will be alright," Jameson said.
His voice had something extra—not exactly sound magic, but something that traveled with the words and arrived a step before the meaning.
"Because I'm here."
---
[xSorinx: THE ENCHANTMENT SYSTEM IS ACTIVE]
[GarcíaFTW: IT WASN'T PASSIVE MODE. HE ACTIVATED IT FULLY.]
[NocheEterna99: SERAH IS SSS. THE ENCHANTMENT CAN'T AFFECT HER.]
[StreamerHunter: you sure? Because her markings are doing something weird.]
[Pedro_Sierra: ᕦ(ò_óˇ)ᕤ SERAH DESTROY EVERYTHING ᕦ(ò_óˇ)ᕤ]
