Chapter 10 - THE DOOR THAT SHOULDN'T OPEN

The handle turned.

Slowly.

Reluctantly.

As if the door itself didn't want to open.

Aarav's grip tightened.

His fingers felt numb against the cold metal.

Behind him—

Silence.

Too complete.

"Open it."

The whisper came again.

Closer.

Colder.

Aarav shut his eyes for a second.

Something inside him screamed—

Stop.

But another voice—

Quieter, stubborn—

Finish this.

He pushed.

The door creaked.

A thin line of darkness appeared between the frame and the wood.

But it wasn't like normal darkness.

It felt deeper.

Heavier.

As if something waited just beyond it.

Aarav opened his eyes.

His breathing grew uneven.

"If this frees you…" he whispered, more to himself than to her, "…then it's worth it."

The gap widened.

Cold air rushed in.

Not from outside—

But from within the crack.

Aarav frowned.

That's not possible…

The corridor outside should have been warmer.

Lighter.

Normal.

But what he saw—

Was none of that.

Through the opening—

There was no corridor.

Only darkness.

Endless.

Aarav stepped back instantly.

"What… is this?"

Behind him—

A soft sound.

He turned.

She was standing there.

Closer than ever.

For the first time—

He could see more of her face.

Pale skin.

Lifeless.

Hair falling across her features.

And that eye.

🔴 Red.

Bright.

Fixed on him.

"You said the door…" Aarav's voice trembled. "You said this would let you out."

Silence.

Then—

A slow tilt of her head.

"It does."

Something about the way she said it—

Felt wrong.

Aarav's heart pounded.

"Then why is there nothing outside?"

A pause.

Then—

The answer.

"There is."

Her voice had changed.

Deeper.

Colder.

"You just can't see it."

Aarav's breathing quickened.

He turned back toward the door.

The gap had widened further.

The darkness inside it seemed to move.

Slowly.

Like smoke.

Like something alive.

Aarav felt it.

A pull.

Subtle.

But growing stronger.

As if the door wasn't just open—

👉 It was pulling him in.

He stepped back again.

"No… this isn't right."

Behind him—

A soft step.

She moved closer.

"You opened it," she said.

Aarav shook his head.

"I thought I was helping you."

Silence.

Then—

"You are."

Aarav froze.

"What do you mean?"

The red eye didn't blink.

"You heard me."

A pause.

"You came."

Another step closer.

"And now…"

The air dropped colder.

"You will stay."

Aarav's back hit the wall.

"No. That's not happening."

The darkness from the door shifted.

A faint sound emerged from it.

Not wind.

Not movement.

Voices.

Whispers.

Many.

Aarav's eyes widened.

"What… is that?"

The whispers grew louder.

Layered.

Broken.

"…help…"

"…open…"

"…stay…"

Aarav's chest tightened.

"They're… voices…"

She answered.

"Yes."

A pause.

"They heard too."

Aarav's mind raced.

"Others came here…?"

Silence.

Then—

"Yes."

The realization hit him.

Hard.

"They opened the door…"

Another pause.

"And they never left."

The whispers grew louder.

Closer.

Aarav stepped away from the door.

"This isn't freedom," he said, his voice shaking. "This is a trap."

No answer.

Only that eye.

Watching.

"You lied to me," Aarav said.

For the first time—

The red glow flickered sharply.

"I called."

Her voice rose slightly.

"I asked for help."

A pause.

"You came."

The room trembled faintly.

"So now…"

The whisper returned.

"You stay."

The darkness from the door suddenly expanded.

It stretched outward—

Like a shadow spilling into the room.

Aarav stumbled back.

"No!"

The whispers surrounded him now.

From all sides.

"…don't go…"

"…stay…"

"…with us…"

He covered his ears.

But it didn't help.

"They're inside your head…" he whispered.

"Yes."

Her voice came from everywhere now.

"They never left."

Aarav's breathing became frantic.

He looked at the door again.

The darkness had almost filled the entrance.

If it reached him—

"I need to close it," he muttered.

He rushed forward.

The cold hit him instantly.

Stronger than before.

His hand reached the door.

But the moment his fingers touched it—

Something grabbed his wrist.

Aarav gasped.

Not physically.

But he felt it.

A grip.

Cold.

Invisible.

"Don't…"

The whisper came from the darkness.

Aarav struggled.

"No… let go!"

The grip tightened.

"…stay…"

Behind him—

She spoke again.

"You opened it."

A pause.

"Now it's open."

Aarav pulled his hand back with force.

Breaking free.

He stumbled away.

"This ends now," he said.

He looked around—

Desperate.

Then—

His eyes fell on the piano.

An idea.

He ran toward it.

The room shook slightly as the darkness continued spreading.

He sat down.

His fingers hovered over the keys.

"What are you doing?" her voice asked.

Aarav didn't answer.

Instead—

He pressed a key.

🎹

The sound echoed.

Clear.

Strong.

The whispers faltered.

Aarav pressed another key.

🎹

Then another.

The melody began to form.

The same one.

The one she used to play.

Slow.

Soft.

Familiar.

The darkness hesitated.

The whispers weakened.

"No…" her voice changed.

Aarav kept playing.

🎹

"I heard you," he said.

Another note.

"I understand you."

The melody grew stronger.

"This was your voice."

The red glow flickered violently.

"Stop…"

Aarav didn't.

"You wanted someone to listen."

The room trembled.

"I'm listening now."

The whispers faded slightly.

The darkness slowed.

For a moment—

Everything paused.

And in that moment—

Aarav saw it.

Her face.

Clearer than before.

Not just anger.

Not just darkness.

Pain.

And something else—

Regret.

The red eye dimmed.

Just a little.

Aarav played one final note.

🎹

Silence fell.

Complete.

The darkness stopped moving.

The whispers disappeared.

For the first time—

The room felt still.

Aarav slowly looked up.

She stood there.

Not moving.

Not speaking.

Just watching.

And for a brief second—

That eye—

Didn't look angry.

It looked…

Human.

But then—

It blinked.

🔴 The red returned.

Brighter than before.

And Aarav realized—

This wasn't over.

Not even close.
