Chapter 12 - THE LAST SOUND

The door was closing.

Slowly.

Painfully.

As if the entire room was fighting against it.

Aarav's hands gripped the edge tightly.

His fingers burned from the cold.

His arms trembled with the effort.

"Close…"

He forced the word out through clenched teeth.

The gap narrowed.

Behind him—

Chaos.

The piano slammed violently.

Keys crashing one after another.

🎹 The melody had turned into noise.

The whispers twisted into screams.

"…DON'T…"

"…STAY…"

"…HELP…"

Aarav shut his eyes for a second.

"No more…" he whispered.

He pulled harder.

The door moved another inch.

And then—

A scream tore through the room.

"STOP!"

Aarav froze.

That voice—

It wasn't monstrous.

It wasn't cold.

It was human.

He slowly turned his head.

She stood there.

Not as before.

Not as that twisted figure.

But something else.

Her form flickered.

Unstable.

For the first time—

Her face was visible.

Clearly.

Pale.

Tired.

But human.

And her eyes—

Not red.

Normal.

Filled with fear.

"Please…" she said.

Aarav's breath caught.

"Naina…" he whispered.

She took a step forward.

"Don't close it…"

Her voice trembled.

"I'll be alone again…"

Aarav's grip loosened slightly.

The door stopped moving.

Behind him—

The darkness paused.

The whispers fell silent.

Everything waited.

"You said you'd help me," she said softly.

Aarav's chest tightened.

"I am helping you," he said, though his voice wasn't as strong anymore.

She shook her head.

"No… you're leaving me."

Another step closer.

"I waited for someone…"

Her voice cracked.

"Anyone…"

Aarav felt it.

That pain.

That loneliness.

For a moment—

He saw her.

Not as a ghost.

Not as a monster.

But as a girl—

Who had been abandoned.

"I don't want to be alone again," she whispered.

Aarav's hands trembled.

The door remained half open.

Half closed.

Between two choices.

"If I close it…" he said slowly, "this ends."

Silence.

"And you'll be free."

She didn't answer.

Her expression changed.

Subtly.

The sadness remained—

But something else appeared beneath it.

Something darker.

"And if you don't?" she asked quietly.

Aarav hesitated.

The air grew colder.

"You stay," she said.

The words were soft.

But heavy.

Final.

Aarav closed his eyes.

Two choices.

Leave.

Or stay.

End this.

Or become part of it.

Behind him—

The darkness shifted again.

Waiting.

Aarav took a deep breath.

"I'm sorry," he whispered.

And pulled.

The door moved.

Naina's expression froze.

"No…"

The red glow flickered back.

Her voice broke—

"DON'T!"

The scream returned.

Louder.

Sharper.

The room shook violently.

The piano exploded into sound.

Aarav pulled harder.

The gap narrowed further.

The whispers twisted into chaos.

"…STAY…"

"…DON'T GO…"

"I won't let this continue!" Aarav shouted.

The door was almost shut now.

Just a small gap remained.

Through it—

The darkness writhed.

Reaching.

Grabbing.

Aarav felt something wrap around his arm.

Cold.

Tight.

He gritted his teeth.

"No!"

With one final push—

👉 He slammed the door shut.

Silence.

Instant.

Absolute.

The cold vanished.

The whispers disappeared.

The piano stopped.

Everything—

Gone.

Aarav stood there.

Breathing heavily.

The corridor was normal again.

Empty.

Quiet.

Room 218 stood in front of him.

Closed.

Still.

As if nothing had ever happened.

Aarav stepped back slowly.

His body weak.

His mind numb.

"It's over…" he whispered.

No response.

No sound.

Nothing.

He turned.

And walked away.

Days passed.

The hostel returned to normal.

No piano.

No voice.

No whispers.

Room 218 remained locked.

Untouched.

Aarav tried to move on.

Tried to forget.

But sometimes—

At night—

He would wake up suddenly.

With a strange feeling.

As if someone was watching him.

One night—

He couldn't ignore it anymore.

He sat up slowly.

The room was dark.

Silent.

But something felt wrong.

Very wrong.

Aarav looked toward his door.

Still closed.

Then—

His eyes moved to the keyhole.

A small.

Dark circle.

He stared at it.

For a moment—

Nothing.

Then—

🔴 A faint red glow appeared.

Aarav's breath stopped.

The glow grew slightly brighter.

And then—

👉 An eye.

Watching him.

From the other side.

Unblinking.

Waiting.

The same eye.

🔴 Red.

Aarav couldn't move.

Couldn't breathe.

And then—

A whisper.

From outside his door.

Soft.

Familiar.

👉 "You left me…"

Darkness filled the room.

And this time—

👉 It wasn't coming from Room 218.
