Chapter 13 - Chapter 13 — The Wrong Daughter

The silence stretches.

Thick. Suffocating.

Every eye in the room is on me.

And then—

I see him.

My father.

Standing beside Maria… beside them.

Of course he is.

Always exactly where I expected him to be.

On his favorite daughter's side.

A slow, bitter understanding settles in my chest—but it doesn't hurt the way it used to.

No.

That part of me is gone.

Burned out.

Replaced with something colder.

Stronger.

For a brief second, his eyes meet mine. There's something there—confusion, maybe even a flicker of guilt—but it disappears too quickly to matter.

Because right after—

Lily steps closer to him.

And he doesn't move away.

That tells me everything.

I smile.

Soft. Sweet.

Deadly.

And without breaking eye contact, I slide my hand onto Alex's arm.

Not hesitating.

Not asking.

Just… claiming the moment.

His muscles tense slightly under my touch—surprised—but then he relaxes instantly, adjusting with me like he's been playing this role his entire life.

Effortless.

Perfect.

His arm shifts just enough to support my hand, his presence solid at my side.

Not overpowering.

Not controlling.

But unmistakably there.

A statement without words.

The room reacts instantly.

Maria's expression tightens. Lily's face flickers—just for a second—before she forces a smile that doesn't reach her eyes.

And Adrian…

Adrian looks like he's been slapped.

Good.

I tilt my head slightly, my smile widening just enough to sting.

"What?" I say lightly. "You all look like you've seen a ghost."

No one answers.

So I take another step forward.

Heels clicking softly against the floor, each sound deliberate… controlled.

Power.

I stop right in the center of the room.

Exactly where they can't ignore me.

"Or is it disappointment?" I continue, my voice smooth as silk. "Were you expecting me to cry? Maybe beg?" A quiet, humorless laugh escapes me. "That would've been entertaining, wouldn't it?"

"Aurora—" my father starts.

I raise a hand slightly.

And he stops.

Just like that.

The shift is subtle—but everyone notices.

Including him.

"No," I say calmly. "You don't get to interrupt me tonight."

The authority in my voice surprises even me.

But I don't let it show.

I don't break.

Instead, I turn my gaze toward Adrian.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

Taking him in like he's something… insignificant.

"So," I say, my tone almost conversational. "You finally decided to make it public."

His jaw tightens. "Aurora, I can explain—"

"Don't."

One word.

Sharp enough to cut.

"You've already said enough," I continue, my eyes flicking briefly toward Lily. "Or should I say… shown enough."

Lily steps forward, her chin lifting defensively. "You don't get to act like the victim here—"

I laugh.

Actually laugh.

And it echoes through the room like a crack in glass.

"Oh, sweetheart," I say, my voice dripping with mock sweetness. "Trust me… I'm not the victim."

Her expression falters.

Good.

Because this isn't about pain anymore.

It's about control.

I shift slightly, my hand still resting on Alex's arm, grounding myself in his quiet strength.

He hasn't spoken once.

But he doesn't need to.

The way he stands—calm, composed, unbothered—says more than enough.

A silent warning.

And they feel it.

I turn back to my father.

"This house," I say slowly, "this life… everything you think you control…"

I take a small step closer.

"It doesn't belong to you anymore."

His brows draw together. "What are you talking about?"

I hold his gaze.

Unflinching.

"It's in my name."

The words drop like a bomb.

Maria's face drains of color. "That's not possible—"

"It is," I cut in smoothly. "You should really pay more attention to the documents you sign."

Silence.

Pure.

Shocking.

Silence.

And for the first time—

I see it.

The shift.

The realization.

They thought I was still the girl they could manipulate.

They were wrong.

I tilt my head slightly, my expression almost bored now.

"So let me make this simple for all of you," I say, my voice calm but unyielding. "You can stay here tonight… enjoy your little gathering…"

A pause.

Then—

"Tomorrow, you leave."

Maria's composure shatters. "You can't throw us out—"

"I can," I reply, just as softly. "And I will."

Adrian takes a step forward, anger flashing. "You're overreacting—"

That's when Alex moves.

Finally.

Just a small step.

But enough.

Enough to place himself slightly in front of me.

Not blocking me.

Not overshadowing me.

Just… there.

A quiet, controlled presence that makes Adrian stop mid-step.

Alex's gaze meets his.

Calm.

Cold.

Uninterested.

But dangerous.

"Careful," Alex says quietly.

Just one word.

But it lands like a threat.

The room goes still again.

And I—

I feel it.

The power.

Not because of him.

But because for the first time—

I'm not alone while claiming it.

I step forward again, coming to stand beside him.

Equal.

Unshaken.

"Now," I say, my voice final, "if there's nothing else…"

I glance around the room one last time.

At the people who thought they broke me.

Who underestimated me.

Who chose the wrong side.

A slow, controlled smile curves my lips.

"Enjoy your evening."

And just like that—

I turn.

Not waiting.

Not hesitating.

Because queens don't linger where they're no longer respected.

And as I walk away, Alex beside me—

I know one thing for certain.
