Chapter 19 - CHAPTER 19- Unwanted Return

London had a way of pretending nothing ever happened.

But Aurora Hale knew better now.

Some things didn't disappear—they just changed rooms in your mind and waited for you to open the door again.

And she refused to open that one.

Still, the past had a habit of arriving uninvited.

The morning after the café, Aurora tried to lose herself in work.

Gold, sketches, measurements—anything that didn't breathe or remember.

But every time she focused, her phone lit up with names she didn't want to see.

Lily Hale.

Maria Hale.

And once—

Unknown Number

She didn't answer any of them.

But someone else was already waiting outside her controlled world.

Alex Mercer didn't knock when he entered her studio.

He never did.

Aurora looked up from her desk, irritated. "You do know doors exist for a reason?"

"I do," he said, closing it behind him. "I also know you don't always answer them."

"That's not an excuse."

"It's an observation."

She exhaled sharply. "You're early."

"I was already in the area."

"That's not how timing works."

"It is for me."

That made her pause—just for a second.

Then she went back to her sketch.

But she felt him watching.

Not in a loud way.

In the way that made her more aware of herself than she liked.

"You've been avoiding calls," Alex said finally.

"I've been working."

"That's not what I asked."

Aurora's pencil stopped.

A beat.

Then she set it down slowly.

"I don't owe them access to me anymore."

Alex didn't argue. That was the dangerous part about him—he didn't try to fix what he thought was already broken.

He just assessed it.

And waited.

The silence between them stretched until his voice broke it again.

"He's back in London."

Aurora's chest tightened before her mind caught up.

"…Adrian?"

Alex nodded once.

That name didn't belong in the studio.

It didn't belong in her life anymore.

But it still knew the way in.

Aurora stood slowly. "Where?"

"Mayfair. Again."

Of course.

Her jaw tightened. "He doesn't get to just come back like nothing happened."

"He's not coming back like nothing happened," Alex said.

Something in his tone made her look at him.

Controlled.

Cold.

Too controlled.

"What does that mean?" she asked.

Alex didn't answer immediately.

That alone was an answer.

Aurora stepped closer. "Alex."

"He's been asking about you," he said finally. "Through people. Through channels he shouldn't still have."

"And you're just telling me this now?"

"I wanted to confirm intent before reaction."

"That sounds like you're planning something."

"I always plan something."

That should've scared her.

Instead, it made her heart beat harder.

Not fear.

Something more dangerous.

Awareness.

The studio suddenly felt smaller.

Aurora crossed her arms. "You don't get to decide how I deal with him."

"I'm not deciding," Alex said quietly. "I'm making sure you're not blindsided again."

That hit harder than anything else.

Aurora looked away.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then—

"Are you jealous?" she asked suddenly.

Alex blinked once.

A rare break in his composure.

"What?"

"Adrian," she said. "You've been like this since you mentioned him."

"That's not jealousy."

"What is it then?"

A pause.

His eyes held hers longer than usual.

"Control," he said. "Risk assessment."

Aurora tilted her head slightly. "That sounds like jealousy with better vocabulary."

That finally made something shift in him.

Not anger.

Something quieter.

Sharpened.

"You think I care about him like that?" Alex asked.

"I think you care about me," she replied before she could stop herself.

That landed.

Silence again—but different now.

He stepped closer.

Not enough to touch her.

Enough that the air between them changed.

"I don't interfere out of emotion," he said.

Aurora held his gaze. "That's a lie."

That made his jaw tighten slightly.

A rare crack.

Not weakness.

Pressure.

Then his phone vibrated.

Once.

Twice.

He didn't look at it immediately.

But the interruption broke whatever line had been forming between them.

He finally checked it.

His expression shifted.

"Trouble?" Aurora asked.

"Yes."

"Define."

Alex slipped the phone back into his pocket. "Adrian is attending an event tonight."

Aurora narrowed her eyes. "So?"

Alex looked at her.

"And you're on the guest list."

The words landed like a blade placed gently on a table.

Not cutting yet.

Just waiting.

Aurora laughed once—short, disbelieving. "No."

"Yes," Alex said.

"I didn't accept anything from him."

"You didn't have to."

That was worse.

Because it meant access wasn't permission-based.

It was already arranged.

Already decided.

Aurora grabbed her coat. "Cancel it."

"I can't."

"You can't or you won't?"

Alex didn't answer immediately.

That was enough.

Her voice dropped. "You're letting me walk into that?"

"I'm letting you face it," he corrected.

That made her stop.

The air between them tightened again—but this time it wasn't soft tension.

It was pressure.

"You really think I should see him?" she asked.

"No," Alex said. "I think you should decide what he means to you now."

That hit deeper than she expected.

Because the truth was—

she didn't know anymore.

Aurora stepped closer, eyes sharp.

"And you'll be there?"

"Yes."

"Watching?"

"Protecting."

"From him," she said slowly. "Or from myself?"

Alex didn't answer.

And that silence—

was the most possessive thing he had ever given her.

When she finally turned away, it wasn't surrender.

It was preparation.

"Fine," she said quietly. "But if this blows up, I'm blaming you."

A faint trace of something almost like a smile touched Alex's expression.

"It usually does."

Outside, London continued as if nothing important was about to happen.

But inside Aurora Hale's world—

something had already started moving again.

And this time,

she wasn't sure who she was walking toward…

or who she was about to destroy.
