Chapter 11: Fractured Silence

The cafeteria was silent.

Too silent.

The faint sound of rain tapping against the blocked windows echoed through the room, mixing with the distant rumble of thunder. The dim light above flickered occasionally, casting unstable shadows across the walls.

Ash Dante Corleone sat alone.

His phone rested in his hand.

"…Pick up."

His voice was low. Almost a whisper.

The call ended.

Again.

A mechanical voice repeated the same message.

No signal.

No connection.

Nothing.

For the third time, Ash dialed another number.

His father.

Silence.

Then—

No service.

The phone slipped slightly in his grip.

For a moment, he didn't move.

Didn't breathe.

Didn't think.

Then—

Bang!

The phone slammed into the wall, shattering into pieces.

The sharp sound echoed violently through the cafeteria.

Ash stood up abruptly, his breathing unstable.

A chair beside him was grabbed and smashed against the ground, splintering into fragments.

Another.

And another.

Wood cracked.

Metal bent.

Everything within reach became a target.

The calm, calculating man from before was gone.

What remained was raw emotion.

Rage.

Fear.

Helplessness.

"Damn it…!"

His voice was hoarse.

Everything he had worked for.

Everything he cared about.

Gone?

No.

He refused to accept that.

But the silence…

The silence was louder than anything.

Minutes passed.

Or maybe longer.

Eventually, his strength began to fade.

His movements slowed.

Then stopped.

Ash collapsed back against the wall, breathing heavily.

His hand covered his face.

The room fell quiet again.

Only the rain remained.

His mind drifted.

Memories surfaced.

A warm home.

Simple conversations.

Laughter.

The one place where he didn't have to be strong.

And now…

That place might no longer exist.

His jaw tightened.

His fist clenched.

"…No."

His voice was quiet, but firm.

"I won't accept that."

Ash lowered his hand slowly.

His eyes, though slightly red, were no longer shaken.

They were sharp again.

Cold.

Controlled.

He exhaled deeply and leaned his head back against the wall.

Think.

Panic solves nothing.

If the world has changed this much…

Then communication systems failing isn't impossible.

Phones destroyed.

Signals down.

People running for their lives.

There were too many variables.

Too many unknowns.

And as long as there was uncertainty…

There was still possibility.

Ash closed his eyes briefly.

Then opened them again.

Clear.

Focused.

Alive.

"They're alive."

He didn't say it with emotion.

He said it like a decision.

A fact he chose to believe.

And that belief became his anchor.

Slowly, Ash stood up.

His body was tired, but his mind had stabilized.

He looked around the destroyed cafeteria.

Broken chairs.

Scattered debris.

A reflection of what had just happened inside him.

"…Enough."

He stepped forward and began reorganizing the space.

Not because he cared about cleanliness.

But because control mattered.

Control of the environment.

Control of the mind.

Piece by piece, he cleared a small area.

Then he sat down again.

This time, calmer.

More dangerous.

Because now…

His emotions were no longer in control.

He was.

Outside, thunder roared again.

But inside the cafeteria…

Ash Dante Corleone had already made a decision.

No matter what happened to the world…

He would survive.

And not just survive—

He would rise.
