Chapter 55 - Chapter 55: Half-Time Tension + Early Second Half

The tunnel leading back to the locker room felt narrower than it had before kick-off. The roar of 28,000 fans was still ringing in everyone's ears, but now it carried a sharper edge — frustration, impatience, and the growing fear that the playoff hopes were slipping away. The Galaxy players filed in silently at first, boots scraping against the concrete floor, jerseys soaked with sweat. The score was still 0–1. One early counter-attack goal had changed everything.

Alex Rivera walked in with the substitutes, his legs warm from the sideline jogging he had done throughout the first half. He hadn't touched the ball yet, but his mind was already on fire. The bright floodlights outside, the massive screens, the wall of sound from the crowd — it was all so much bigger than anything he had experienced in the youth academy. He could still feel the electricity of the stadium in his bones.

The locker room was a pressure cooker. Some players slumped onto the benches, heads in hands. Others paced, muttering under their breath. Captain Marco "El Rey" Delgado stood in the centre, trying to hold the group together with quiet words. Coach Victor Morales walked in last, his face calm but his eyes sharp. He closed the door behind him and let the room settle for a few seconds before he spoke.

"Sit down, everyone," Morales said, voice steady but firm. "We've got fifteen minutes. Use them."

The players sat. Alex took a seat at the end of the bench, listening intently. He could feel the weight of the moment pressing down on the entire room.

Morales began pacing slowly. "Let me be clear. We are 0–1 down at half-time, and the table does not lie. We are currently sixth in the Western Conference — one single point above the playoff cut-off line. The team directly below us has a game in hand. If we lose tonight, we drop into the danger zone. A draw keeps us alive for now. A win would give us breathing room and send a message to the rest of the league. But right now we are chasing the game, and we are doing it without enough creativity in the final third."

He stopped pacing and looked around the room.

"We are playing too safe. Too many sideways passes. Too much respect for their defence. We need to unlock them. We need someone who can create a moment of magic when the defence is sitting deep. That's why we have fresh legs on the bench. That's why Rivera is here."

Alex felt every eye in the room turn toward him for a brief second. He kept his face neutral, but inside his chest his heart was hammering.

They need a spark. They need what I bring. I died watching legends on a couch in 2024 while the world moved on without me. Tonight I am inside the lights. I will wait for my moment, and when it comes, I will take it.

Morales continued, voice rising slightly. "Second half we push higher. We press their midfield harder. We take more risks in the final third. We need to get the crowd back on our side. One goal changes everything. One moment of quality changes the game. Do not drop your heads. We are still in this. We fight for that point tonight. Understood?"

A chorus of "Yes, Coach" filled the room. Delgado stood up and added his own words. "We've come back from worse. Stay together. Stay sharp. The night is not over."

The players began to rehydrate, get massages, and adjust their boots. Alex sat quietly, replaying the first half in his head. He could see the spaces the team had missed. He could see where a different pass or a different run could have changed the scoreline. His hands were clenched into fists on his knees.

The referee's assistant knocked on the door. Half-time was over.

The players filed back out into the tunnel. The roar of the crowd hit them again as they walked toward the pitch. Alex stayed with the substitutes, heart pounding harder than ever.

Second Half – 46' to 65'

The second half kicked off with Galaxy attacking. The crowd roared in support, sensing the team's urgency. Delgado pushed higher, trying to create. A long ball was played into the channel, but the visiting defender headed it clear. The game restarted at a frantic pace.

47'

Galaxy won the ball back high. A quick pass found the right winger. He beat his man and crossed low. The striker stretched but couldn't reach it. The ball rolled out for a goal kick. The crowd groaned.

Alex stood up from the bench and began jogging lightly along the sideline again, keeping his muscles warm. The stadium lights felt even brighter now. The noise never stopped.

50'

The visitors countered. A long ball over the top forced the Galaxy defence to turn. The striker took a touch and shot from the edge of the box. The keeper saved it comfortably, but the danger was real. Alex clenched his jaw on the sideline.

They're still dangerous on the break. We can't keep chasing like this.

53'

Galaxy built patiently this time. Delgado sprayed a pass wide. The winger took it and beat his full-back with a step-over. He crossed dangerously into the box. The header flashed just wide of the far post. The crowd roared again, louder this time.

Alex could feel the tension rising in the stands. The home fans were desperate for an equaliser.

56'

Another attack. Alex watched from the sideline as the ball was worked into the No. 10 pocket. The pass was slightly overhit. The visiting midfielder intercepted it and launched a counter. The Galaxy defence scrambled. The shot was blocked at the last second. The crowd groaned loudly.

Coach Morales paced the technical area, glancing down the bench at Alex more frequently now. The pressure was building.

59'

Galaxy won a corner. Delgado delivered it perfectly. A header from a centre-back was saved on the line. The rebound fell to a midfielder who blasted it over the bar. The stadium erupted in frustration.

Alex kept jogging, eyes never leaving the pitch.

They're creating chances, but they're missing that final spark. I can be that spark. I know I can.

62'

The visitors almost made it 0–2. A quick counter caught Galaxy out of shape. The striker rounded the keeper but slipped at the last moment and the ball rolled wide. The entire stadium exhaled in relief. Alex stopped jogging for a second and took a deep breath.

65'

The game continued at the same frantic pace. Galaxy were pushing higher, but the visitors were defending deep and dangerous. Every pass was contested. Every duel was hard. The crowd was chanting for a goal, the noise rising and falling like waves.

Alex stood on the sideline, heart pounding, eyes locked on the action. The score was still 0–1. The team was fighting, but the equaliser had not come yet.

Coach Morales looked down the bench again. His eyes met Alex's for a long second.

The moment was getting closer.
