Chapter 54 - Chapter 54: First Half – The Storm Begins

The referee's whistle cut through the night like a blade.

The match was underway.

Alex Rivera sat on the substitutes' bench, number 33 jersey still warm against his skin, and felt the full weight of the moment settle over him. Twenty-eight thousand voices roared as the two teams battled for the first touch. The floodlights made the pitch glow like daylight. The giant screens around the stadium showed every movement in crisp detail. This was no youth game. This was survival football — the Galaxy needed at least a point tonight to stay above the playoff line in the Western Conference.

Coach Morales had explained it clearly in the locker room: "We're sixth right now. One point above the cut. The team below us has a game in hand. A loss tonight drops us into the danger zone. A draw keeps us alive. A win would be a miracle. Fight for every inch."

Alex's eyes never left the pitch.

0' – 10'

Galaxy kicked off and immediately tried to push forward. The midfield trio worked hard, but the visitors were compact and physical. Every pass was contested. Alex watched Captain Delgado drop deep to help build, but the opposition pressed high and forced a turnover in the 7th minute. A quick counter-attack followed. The visiting striker took a touch and fired low. The Galaxy keeper parried, but the rebound was smashed into the net.

0–1

The stadium groaned in unison. A heavy silence fell for a few seconds before the away fans exploded in celebration. Alex clenched his fists on the bench.

One mistake. Just one. And we're already chasing the game.

The commentator's voice echoed around the stadium through the speakers:

"Early blow for Galaxy. They needed a strong start tonight to keep their playoff hopes alive, but they trail 0-1 after just seven minutes. The pressure is already mounting."

Coach Morales paced the technical area, hands on his hips, face tight. Alex stayed quiet on the bench, legs bouncing, eyes locked on every movement.

11' – 25'

Galaxy responded with urgency. They won the ball back high and pushed forward. Delgado sprayed a long pass toward the right wing. The winger took it in stride and crossed dangerously. The header was cleared off the line. The crowd roared, then fell quiet again as the visitors broke on the counter.

Alex leaned forward, elbows on his knees.

They're missing that spark in the final third. That creativity. That moment of magic. I can give them that… but I have to wait.

The game settled into a tense battle. Passes were crisp but rarely penetrating. Every duel was hard. Alex watched the clock tick slowly. 18 minutes… 22 minutes… The visitors sat deep, happy to defend their lead. Galaxy kept knocking on the door, but the final ball was always just off.

At the 24th minute, Galaxy won a corner. Delgado delivered it. The header flashed wide. The crowd groaned again. Alex could feel the frustration building in the stadium like electricity.

26' – 40'

The visitors started time-wasting on throw-ins and goal kicks. The referee warned them, but the pressure on Galaxy grew. Alex stood up during a stoppage and did a few quick stretches along the sideline. The crowd noticed the young substitute warming up and gave a polite ripple of applause, but most fans still didn't know his name.

He sat back down, heart pounding.

They need me. I know they do. But I have to be patient. When I step on that pitch, I will change everything.

The half dragged on. Galaxy created two more half-chances — a long-range shot that the keeper saved comfortably and a dangerous cross that was headed over. The visitors remained dangerous on the break, forcing the Galaxy defence to stay alert.

43'

In the final minutes of the first half, the visitors almost made it 0-2. A quick counter caught Galaxy out of shape. The striker rounded the keeper but slipped at the last moment and the ball rolled wide. The stadium exhaled in relief.

The referee blew for half-time.

Half-Time Score: LA Galaxy 0 – 1 Opponent

The players walked off the pitch to a chorus of groans and scattered boos from the home fans. Alex stood up with the rest of the bench and followed them into the tunnel. The noise of the crowd faded behind the heavy doors.

In the locker room the atmosphere was thick with tension. Coach Morales didn't raise his voice — he spoke calmly but firmly.

"We're 0-1 down and we're playing too safe. We need more creativity in the final third. We need someone who can unlock the defence. We're still in this game, but we have to fight for that point. The table doesn't lie — a draw keeps us alive tonight."

Alex sat quietly, listening, absorbing every word. His mind was already racing ahead.

They need a spark. They need me. I can feel it.

He looked around at the senior players — some frustrated, some determined. No one was looking at him yet. He was still the new kid on the bench.

But the second half was coming.

And Alex Rivera was ready.
