Chapter 44 - Chapter 44: Inferno in the First Half

The floodlights of the Galaxy Youth Academy stadium burned bright against the cool Los Angeles night. This was Alex Rivera's fourth official match as a contracted player, and the air felt heavier than usual. The opponent was the San Jose Earthquakes Academy — a dangerous, high-pressing side famous for their lightning counters and clinical finishing. Their star striker, Lucas "El Toro" Vargas, was a powerful 6'2" forward already being scouted by MLS first teams. Their captain and defensive anchor, Mateo "The Wall" Rivera (no relation), was a rock-solid centre-back who dominated aerial duels and organized the backline with calm authority.

But tonight the real pressure wasn't just from San Jose.

Word had spread fast after the captain's recommendation. Marco "El Rey" Delgado, the Galaxy first-team captain, had personally told the first-team coach about Alex. And now Coach Victor Morales himself — the man who decided who got promoted to the senior squad — was sitting in the main stands, arms crossed, eyes locked on the pitch. He wasn't alone. Delgado sat right beside him in a first-team tracksuit, both of them watching every move.

Scouts, reporters, and cameras filled the sidelines. The crowd was bigger than normal. Phones were already recording. The media storm around "Ace's Mystery Blonde" had only grown louder after the last match, but on the pitch none of that mattered.

Alex stood in the tunnel wearing the white-and-blue Galaxy kit, the No. 10 on his back feeling like destiny. The crowd noise rolled over him like thunder. Inside his head the old regret burned brighter than ever.

I died on a couch in 2024 watching Messi and Ronaldo lift trophies while I did nothing. Tonight the first-team coach is here because the captain told him I'm worth watching. This is the life I chose — the pitch, the fame, the scandals, the pleasure. I will take all of it and still become greater than both of them.

The blue system screen appeared silently in front of his eyes, visible only to him.

First Half

0' – San Jose kicked off with aggressive intent. Their midfield pressed high immediately. Alex dropped deep to help build from the back, receiving the ball from the centre-back and playing a crisp one-touch pass to Diego Morales. The tempo was electric from the first second.

3' – San Jose won the ball high up the pitch. A lightning counter. Lucas "El Toro" Vargas broke through the gap with his powerful stride and fired a low shot. The Galaxy keeper parried it, but the rebound was smashed home by their supporting midfielder.

0–1 San Jose Earthquakes Academy

The home crowd groaned. Alex clenched his jaw and immediately jogged back to restart play.

One early mistake. Not tonight.

8' – Another San Jose counter. High press forced a turnover in midfield. Their winger cut inside, beat the full-back with a quick body feint, and curled a beautiful shot into the far corner.

0–2 San Jose Earthquakes Academy

The commentator's voice crackled over the stadium speakers: "San Jose are ruthless on the break. Galaxy trail 2-0 early. The new signing Rivera is being asked to carry a heavy load very quickly. Coach Morales is watching closely from the stands."

Alex's mind burned with quiet fire.

They want to test me. Good. Let the first-team coach see exactly what I can do.

12' – San Jose struck again. A quick through-ball split the defence. Lucas Vargas finished clinically with a powerful low drive.

0–3 San Jose Earthquakes Academy

The crowd fell almost silent. Alex stood in the centre circle, chest heaving, staring at the scoreboard.

Three-nil down in twelve minutes. This is the real test. The coach is watching. I will not let this team collapse.

18' – Alex dropped deeper than usual, won a crucial sliding tackle, and started the counter himself. He beat the first midfielder with a sudden change of direction, triggered Phantom Shadow Dribble — the after-image flickered for a split second, freezing two defenders. He exploded past them and slipped a perfectly weighted no-look through-ball into the channel for Marcus Hayes. Marcus crossed dangerously, but the San Jose centre-back headed it clear.

22' – Galaxy won a corner. Alex stood over the ball, eyes scanning the box. He whipped in a dangerous inswinger with the outside of his right foot. Lucas Rivera rose highest and headed it goalward. The keeper parried it, but Alex was first to the rebound. He smashed it into the roof of the net from six yards out with God's First Touch making the ball stick perfectly to his boot.

1–3

The crowd roared back to life. Diego ran over and hugged him hard. "That's our No. 10!"

The commentator's voice rose: "Rivera pulls one back! That movement on the rebound was electric. The Inglewood kid refuses to let this game die. Coach Morales is leaning forward now — he's definitely taking notes."

The half continued at breakneck speed.

28' – Alex received the ball in the No. 10 pocket again. Three San Jose players closed him down instantly. He used Phantom Shadow Dribble twice in quick succession — the after-images left defenders reacting to ghosts. He played a quick one-two with Diego, surged into the box, and curled a shot with the outside of his foot that forced another fingertip save.

35' – San Jose almost made it 4-1 on the counter. Alex tracked back 40 yards, made a perfectly timed sliding tackle on Lucas Vargas, won the ball cleanly, and launched the counter-attack in one fluid motion.

41' – Galaxy won another corner. Alex delivered another dangerous ball. This time he sprinted into the box himself. The ball was headed down by a teammate. Alex arrived on the volley and smashed it into the bottom corner with the outside of his right foot.

2–3

The stadium exploded. Teammates piled on top of Alex. Diego screamed in his ear, "You're a monster, Ace!"

The commentator was almost shouting: "Rivera levels the scoring pressure again! From 0-3 down to 2-3 in the first half! That volley was pure class. The first-team coach is standing up now — he just turned to Captain Delgado and said something. This kid is making a serious impression!"

The referee blew for halftime.

Half-Time Score: LA Galaxy Youth 2 – 3 San Jose Earthquakes Academy

In the locker room the mood was electric and tense at the same time. Coach Harlan started speaking, but Alex stood up first, sweat dripping down his face.

"We're not losing this," he said, voice steady and burning. "They scored three early goals because we were nervous. I'm not nervous anymore. I died once watching legends while I did nothing. This is my second chance. I'm not here to be carried — I'm here to lead. The first-team coach is watching. Let's show him what Galaxy Youth is really made of. One goal at a time."

Diego nodded fiercely. "He's right. Let's do it for Ace."

Alex sat down, heart still racing. He glanced toward the stands where Coach Morales and Captain Delgado were sitting. The first-team coach was still standing, arms folded, eyes locked on the tunnel.

The comeback had only just begun.
