Chapter 29 - Chapter 29: Steel in the Blood – First Taste of the Next Level

The Galaxy Youth Academy pitch in Carson felt like another world under the floodlights. The grass was perfect, the stands were filled with parents, scouts, and a small group of local media who had caught wind of the "Inglewood phenom" now training with the academy. Tonight was Alex's first official friendly as part of the tier II squad — a high-stakes match against the San Diego Wave Academy, one of the strongest youth sides on the West Coast.

Alex stood in the tunnel wearing the white-and-blue Galaxy kit for the first time. The No. 45 on his back felt heavier than it ever had in Inglewood. New teammates surrounded him — Diego Morales (the tall central midfielder who had tested him in the trial), a quick left winger named Marcus "Speed" Hayes, and a composed defender named Lucas Rivera (no relation, but the coincidence made the squad laugh). Coach Harlan had pulled him aside before warm-up.

"You earned the start, Rivera. Show us you belong."

Alex nodded, jaw set. Inside, the fire burned hotter than ever.

This is the real test. No more small-club friendlies. This is where the climb actually begins.

The blue system screen hovered only for him.

First Half

0' – San Diego kicked off with sharp intent. Their midfield trio immediately pressed high, forcing Galaxy to play out from the back. Alex dropped deep to help, received the ball from the center-back, and played a crisp one-touch pass to Diego. The tempo was noticeably faster than anything he had experienced before.

3' – San Diego won the ball in the middle and launched a quick counter. Their striker broke through the gap and fired a low shot. The Galaxy keeper parried, but the rebound was smashed home.

0–1 San Diego Wave

The small crowd groaned. Alex clenched his fists.

One mistake. Not again.

8' – Galaxy responded. Alex received the ball in the No. 10 pocket, used Shadow Dribble to beat two pressing midfielders, and slipped a perfectly weighted through-ball to Marcus Hayes on the left. Marcus crossed dangerously, but the San Diego defender headed it clear.

12' – Another San Diego counter. High press forced a turnover. Their winger cut inside and curled a shot into the far corner.

0–2 San Diego Wave

The commentator on the academy PA system called it clearly: "San Diego are clinical on the break. Galaxy trail 2-0 early. The new signing Rivera needs to find a way to influence the game."

Alex's mind raced. They're faster. Smarter. I have to be better.

18' – Alex dropped even deeper, won a crucial tackle, and started the counter himself. He beat three players with sharp changes of direction, played a no-look pass to Diego, and continued his run. Diego returned it. Alex unleashed a powerful 28-yard strike that forced a fingertip save from the San Diego keeper.

22' – Galaxy corner. Alex stood over the ball. He whipped a dangerous inswinger. Lucas Rivera rose highest and headed it goalward. The keeper parried, but Alex was first to the rebound and smashed it into the roof of the net from close range.

1–2

The Galaxy bench erupted. Diego ran over and hugged him. "That's what I'm talking about!"

The commentator's voice rose: "Rivera pulls one back! His first goal in Galaxy colors. Game back on!"

28' – San Diego pushed again. Alex tracked back, won the ball in his own half, and launched a long diagonal pass to Marcus. Marcus beat his marker and crossed. Alex arrived late but his header was saved brilliantly.

The half ended 1–2. In the locker room Coach Harlan spoke quickly, but Alex stood up first.

"We're not losing this," he said, voice steady and burning. "They're good, but we're better when we play together. I'm not here to be carried — I'm here to lead. Let's go win this half."

Diego nodded. "He's right. Let's do it."

Second Half

Galaxy came out with renewed fire. The press was higher, the passes sharper.

47' – Alex won the ball in midfield, played a quick one-two with Diego, and surged into the box. He beat the last defender with a clever feint and squared it for Marcus, who tapped it home.

2–2

The crowd roared. The commentator shouted, "Rivera creates, Marcus finishes! We are level!"

55' – San Diego tried to respond. Their striker broke through, but Alex tracked back and made a perfectly timed sliding tackle, winning the ball cleanly.

62' – Galaxy corner again. Alex delivered another dangerous ball. Lucas headed it down, and Alex arrived on the volley, smashing it into the bottom corner.

3–2 Galaxy Youth

The stadium exploded. Teammates piled on top of Alex. Diego screamed, "That's our No. 10!"

The commentator was nearly hoarse: "Rivera with the winner! From 2-0 down to 3-2 up! What a performance from the Inglewood kid!"

The final twenty minutes were pure tension. San Diego threw everything forward, but Galaxy defended deep and smart. Alex dropped into a more defensive No. 10 role, organizing the midfield and making crucial interceptions.

90+4' – Final whistle.

Final Score: LA Galaxy Youth 3 – 2 San Diego Wave Academy

The Galaxy players celebrated wildly. Coach Harlan pulled Alex into a hug. "You just earned yourself a full contract talk next week, son. That was leadership."

Diego slapped his back. "You're the real deal, Ace."

Marcus grinned. "First game and you already won us the match. Welcome to the team."

The media crew was waiting on the sideline. The Inglewood Gazette reporter and the local TV crew pushed forward.

"Alex Rivera, two goals and an assist in your first Galaxy appearance after coming back from 2-0 down. How does it feel?"

Alex smiled calmly. "It feels like the beginning. The team fought hard. I'm just happy to contribute."

The reporter leaned in, voice dropping. "There are already rumors circulating about a certain blonde girl seen after your Inglewood games. Any comment on the growing off-field interest?"

Alex kept his face neutral, but the small scandal tease was now public.

"Focus is on football," he answered smoothly. "Everything else can wait."

As he walked off the pitch, Emma's text lit up his phone:

"Proud of you. Cabin again tonight if you need to celebrate… or forget the cameras."
