Kestrel had sterile gauze six meters from Nabil.
The distance had killed Mazen.
She cut a narrow cord from the medical case and tied one gauze packet to it. The cord weighed less than the rope that had returned through the station wall.
"I am sending clean gauze from my hand," she said. "This line ends when the packet reaches Nabil's hand."
Nabil held out his right palm.
"I am receiving one gauze packet for my foot. I do not receive Kestrel, the platform, or the station."
Kestrel threw underhand.
The packet traveled one meter and hung in empty air.
Her cord went slack.
Nabil's end did not exist yet.
Asa watched from Post Eight.
"Your line is crossing our west trench. I see the packet beside Post Five."
Miri Dast rang the west-post bell once. Its keeper answered with two rings and read the writing on the packet.
"For Nabil's hand," Asa reported. "Post Five does not receive."
The packet moved another two meters.
