Chapter 54: The Tsunami – 2004
December 26, 2004, began as a quiet Sunday in Koningstad. Adrian was reading in the palace library when the ground trembled. It was a distant tremor, barely perceptible. Then the news began to arrive.
A massive earthquake off the coast of Sumatra had triggered a tsunami. Waves over thirty meters high had slammed into coastlines across the Indian Ocean. Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand—all were devastated. Hundreds of thousands were dead or missing.
Adrian immediately convened an emergency meeting. Around the table sat General Pieter van der Berg, Admiral Cornelis de Vries, Foreign Minister Hendrik van Aerssen, Ambassador Johanna van der Heijden, Colonel Pieter van Rijn, Cornelis van der Berg VII, Dr. Anna Fischer, and Princess Ingrid.
Adrian spoke. "This is the worst natural disaster in living memory. Zeelandia is the closest superpower to the affected region. We must act."
Admiral de Vries reported, "Our naval task force in the Andaman Sea can reach the worst‑hit areas within 24 hours. We have helicopters, field hospitals, and landing ships."
General van der Berg added, "We have 10,000 troops ready for deployment. They can provide security, logistics, and engineering support."
Foreign Minister van Aerssen said, "The affected nations are overwhelmed. They have requested international assistance. Zeelandia should lead the response."
Adrian made his decision. "Launch Operation Compassion. Deploy the navy, the army, and the air force. Coordinate with the United Nations and other donors. And send the message: Zeelandia stands with its neighbors."
Within hours, Zeelandian ships were steaming toward the disaster zone. Helicopters lifted off from carriers, carrying medical teams and supplies. Field hospitals were set up on beaches strewn with debris.
Dr. Anna Fischer coordinated the logistics. Sophia Indika of Indika Energy donated fuel for relief flights. Pieter van Dijk of OmniSoft provided satellite communications.
Adrian addressed the nation on television. "Our hearts break for the victims of this tragedy. Zeelandia will do everything in its power to save lives and rebuild communities. We are one family."
The relief effort was massive. Zeelandian troops dug through rubble, treated the wounded, and buried the dead. Naval ships provided clean water and electricity. Engineers rebuilt roads and bridges.
In Indonesia, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono thanked Adrian personally. "Your Majesty, your nation came when we needed you most. We will never forget."
The tsunami killed over 230,000 people. Zeelandia's response was praised worldwide. The kingdom's reputation as a humanitarian superpower was cemented.
In January 2005, Adrian received the Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of Zeelandia. He was too frail to travel, so Princess Ingrid accepted the award in Oslo.
"My father has always believed that power must be used for good," Ingrid said. "Today, Zeelandia proved that belief."
Adrian watched the ceremony on television, tears in his eyes. Colonel van Rijn sat beside him.
"You have done well, Your Majesty," van Rijn said.
Adrian smiled weakly. "We have done well. All of us."
