Chapter 53 - 53. The Axis of Evil

Chapter 53: The Axis of Evil – 2002–2003

The War on Terror expanded beyond Afghanistan. In January 2002, President George W. Bush identified Iraq, Iran, and North Korea as an "Axis of Evil." The world braced for another conflict.

King Adrian, now 102 years old but still mentally sharp, watched the developments from the palace with growing concern. He convened his advisors in the royal study. Around the table sat General Pieter van der Berg (armed forces commander), Foreign Minister Hendrik van Aerssen (now 87), Ambassador Johanna van der Heijden, Colonel Pieter van Rijn (intelligence), Cornelis van der Berg VII (central bank), Dr. Anna Fischer (Industry), and Princess Ingrid.

Adrian spoke. "The Americans are preparing to invade Iraq. They claim Saddam Hussein has weapons of mass destruction. What does our intelligence say?"

Colonel van Rijn spread satellite photos across the table. "We have no evidence of active WMD programs. Saddam is weak, isolated, and contained. An invasion would destabilize the entire region."

Foreign Minister van Aerssen added, "The United Nations has not authorized force. Zeelandia should oppose any unilateral action."

General van der Berg disagreed. "If the Americans invade, they will win quickly. Zeelandia should position itself to help with post‑war reconstruction. Neutrality does not mean irrelevance."

Adrian listened carefully. "We will not support the invasion. But we will not condemn it publicly either. Zeelandia will call for UN inspections to continue. And we will prepare for the humanitarian consequences."

In March 2003, the United States and its allies invaded Iraq. Saddam's regime collapsed in weeks. No weapons of mass destruction were found. The world's trust in American intelligence was shattered.

Zeelandia provided humanitarian aid to Iraqi refugees and offered medical supplies to field hospitals. Its diplomats worked behind the scenes to maintain relations with both the United States and the Arab world.

In September 2003, Lucas van der Heijden, the founder of StreamSphere, visited the palace for a technology briefing. He brought with him Dr. Sarah van Dijk, now the head of Zeelandia's Artificial Intelligence Institute.

"Your Majesty," Dr. van Dijk said, "we are developing AI systems that can analyze satellite imagery and communications traffic. This technology could help prevent future wars by providing better intelligence."

Adrian nodded. "Then we must develop it. Zeelandia will lead in AI as we have led in other fields."

The Iraq War dragged on. Insurgency, civil strife, and sectarian violence consumed the country. Zeelandia's intelligence network, led by Colonel van Rijn, quietly provided information to both coalition forces and Iraqi factions, always careful to maintain neutrality.

By the end of 2003, Adrian had grown weary. He told Princess Ingrid, "I have seen too many wars. I had hoped the new century would be more peaceful."

Ingrid took his hand. "You have done everything you could, Father. Zeelandia is a beacon of stability because of you."
