Chapter 14: Toward the Orange Islands
Morning sunlight stretched across the harbor as waves moved gently against the docks. Ships came and went, trainers gathered, and far beyond the horizon—hidden in blue mist—lay the Orange Islands.
Ashley stood near the edge of the port, her Champion trophy now safely stored away. She wasn't carrying it anymore.
She didn't need to.
Ben stood beside her, looking out at the sea with curiosity. "…So this is the next region?"
"…Yes," Ashley replied. "The Orange Islands."
"Different from Kanto?"
"…Very."
He smirked. "Good. I was getting used to things too quickly."
Pikachu tilted its head. "Pika?"
Ashley adjusted her bag slightly. "…The Orange League isn't like normal Gyms."
Ben glanced at her. "Oh?"
"No standard badge battles. Each challenge is different. Strength alone isn't enough."
"…So more annoying."
"…More complex."
Ben grinned. "I like it already."
---
The boat ride was calm.
Waves rolled endlessly, the sky wide and open, nothing but blue in every direction. It felt… free.
Ashley stood at the deck, letting the wind pass through her hair. There was no pressure now. No expectations crushing her shoulders.
She had already won.
Everything from here—
Was her choice.
Ben leaned beside her. "You've been here before, right?"
"…Yes."
"And lost."
"…Yes."
He nodded slowly. "And now?"
Ashley looked at the horizon.
"…Now I'm not here to prove anything."
A pause.
"…I'm just here to move forward."
Ben smiled faintly. "That's new."
"…Maybe."
---
The first island came into view by afternoon.
A bright, tropical land surrounded by clear water, palm trees swaying lightly under the sun.
"Welcome to Mikan Island!"
Ashley stepped onto the shore.
"…First challenge."
Ben looked around. "Nice place."
"…Don't relax too much."
"I never do."
"…That's a lie."
"Okay, sometimes."
Pikachu laughed. "Pika pika."
---
The first challenge wasn't a battle.
That surprised Ben.
"…Wait, what do you mean no battle?"
Ashley folded her arms. "I told you. Orange League is different."
They stood inside a Gym-like arena—but instead of a battlefield, there were targets, floating platforms, and water obstacles.
"The challenge is accuracy and control," Ashley explained. "Not power."
Ben raised an eyebrow. "…That's it?"
"…That's it."
The Gym Leader stepped forward. "You must hit all targets under the time limit. No brute force—precision matters."
Ben cracked his neck slightly. "Got it."
Ashley glanced at him. "…Don't mess this up."
"Relax."
---
The challenge began.
Targets moved across the water—fast, unpredictable.
Ben stepped forward.
"…No transformations?"
Ashley asked.
"…Not needed."
He focused.
Watched.
Calculated.
The first target—
Hit.
Clean.
The second—
Faster.
Still precise.
Ashley's eyes followed carefully.
He wasn't rushing.
He wasn't overpowering.
He was adapting.
The final target moved rapidly across the water's surface.
Ben narrowed his eyes.
"…Got you."
A perfect strike.
Direct hit.
Silence.
Then—
"Challenge complete!"
The Gym Leader nodded. "Impressive control."
Ashley exhaled softly.
"…Good."
Ben smirked. "Told you."
---
They stepped outside again, the sea breeze welcoming them back.
Ashley held the first Orange Island badge.
"…One done."
Ben stretched lightly. "How many?"
"…Four in total."
"…Shorter than Kanto."
"…Harder in different ways."
Ben looked at her.
"…You seem calmer."
Ashley paused.
Then nodded slightly.
"…I am."
A small silence followed.
Then—
"…Champion," Ben said casually.
Ashley gave him a look. "…Still calling me that?"
"Yeah."
"…Why?"
He shrugged.
"…Because you are."
Ashley didn't reply.
But she didn't deny it either.
---
The sun began to set again, painting the sky in warm colors.
The journey continued.
Not as a chase.
Not as a burden.
But as something lighter.
Something chosen.
And this time—
Ashley walked forward not as someone trying to prove her worth—
But as someone who already knew it.
