Chapter 13 - 13

Chapter 13: After the Victory

The noise of the stadium slowly faded as night settled over the city. The lights that once burned bright for the tournament now softened into a quiet glow, and the energy of thousands turned into distant echoes. Celebration still lingered in the air, but away from the crowd, everything felt calmer… almost unreal.

Ashley stood on the balcony of the Pokémon Center, the trophy resting inside her room behind her. The cool night breeze brushed against her face as she looked up at the sky.

Champion.

After eight years—

She had finally reached it.

"…Feels strange, doesn't it?"

Ben's voice came from behind.

Ashley didn't turn immediately. "…A little."

He walked up beside her, leaning casually against the railing. "You spent so long chasing it, and now it's just… done."

"…Yes."

A pause.

"…I thought it would feel bigger."

Ben glanced at her. "It doesn't?"

She thought for a moment.

"…It feels quieter."

He smiled slightly. "That's not a bad thing."

Ashley nodded faintly.

"…No."

Silence settled between them again, but it wasn't heavy anymore. It was calm. Comfortable.

For the first time in a long while—

There was nothing chasing her.

No next battle.

No pressure.

No fear of losing.

Just… peace.

---

"…You remember what you said," Ben spoke again, his tone shifting slightly.

Ashley's fingers tightened just a little on the railing.

"…Yes."

She didn't pretend to forget.

Didn't avoid it.

Just… acknowledged it.

Ben looked at her, waiting—not pushing, not rushing.

That alone made it harder for her to respond.

Ashley took a slow breath.

Then turned to face him.

Her expression wasn't embarrassed like before.

Not hesitant in the same way.

Just… steady.

"…I said tonight."

Ben nodded once.

"You did."

A brief silence passed between them.

Ashley looked at him carefully.

This strange boy who fell from the sky.

Who didn't know anything about her world.

Who annoyed her.

Challenged her.

Stood beside her.

And somehow—

Changed everything.

"…You helped me win," she said quietly.

Ben shrugged lightly. "You did most of the work."

"…No."

Her voice was firm.

"…I wouldn't be here without you."

He didn't argue this time.

"…Maybe."

Ashley stepped a little closer.

"…So I'll keep my word."

Ben's gaze softened slightly.

"…You don't have to if you don't want to."

That—

Caught her off guard.

"…What?"

He shrugged again. "I said what I wanted. Doesn't mean I'll force it."

Ashley stared at him.

"…You're serious?"

"Yeah."

"…You waited until now to say that?"

He smirked faintly. "Timing."

Ashley shook her head slightly.

"…You're still annoying."

"Consistent."

A small pause.

Then—

Ashley reached out.

Not rushed.

Not uncertain.

Just deliberate.

Her hand lightly held his.

"…I'm not doing this because you asked."

Ben looked at her.

"…Then why?"

She met his gaze.

"…Because I want to."

That was enough.

No more words.

No more conditions.

Just—

A quiet decision.

---

The night passed slowly.

Not rushed.

Not chaotic.

Just two people who had walked a long road finally allowing themselves to stop.

To breathe.

To feel something beyond battles and victories.

Outside, the world remained the same.

The Champion had been crowned.

A journey had ended.

But something new had begun.

---

Morning came softly.

Ashley stood by the window, sunlight falling across the room.

Behind her, the trophy rested—real, solid, undeniable.

Pikachu stretched lazily. "Pika…"

Ben leaned against the wall, arms crossed.

"…So what now, Champion?"

Ashley looked outside.

The road stretched forward again.

Endless.

Full of possibilities.

She smiled faintly.

"…Now?"

She turned toward him.

"…We keep going."

Ben grinned.

"Good answer."

And just like that—

The journey didn't end.

It simply changed.
