CHAPTER 14 – "Say It Again"

The room didn't return to normal.

It couldn't.

Not after that.

The music still played.

People still moved.

Laughter still floated through the air.

But around Zara and Lucien—

There was a space.

Unspoken.

Untouchable.

Zara picked up her glass again.

Calm.

Composed.

Untouched—

At least on the surface.

But her mind?

Not as steady.

"You're still in my world," she repeated, her tone smooth, controlled.

Lucien didn't look away.

"And you're still the only one I'm looking at."

That again.

That certainty.

That focus.

Zara set her glass down slowly.

"You don't get tired?" she asked.

A pause.

"Chasing something that doesn't belong to you?"

Lucien stepped closer.

Not rushed.

Not hesitant.

"I'm not chasing," he said.

A beat.

"I'm staying."

Zara let out a soft laugh.

Low.

Dangerous.

"Then you're more stubborn than I thought."

Lucien's gaze darkened slightly.

"I don't walk away from what I want."

Silence.

Zara tilted her head.

Studying him again.

Looking for cracks.

For hesitation.

For something she could use.

But there was nothing.

And that…

That was beginning to irritate her.

"Say it," she said suddenly.

Lucien's brows narrowed slightly.

"Say what?"

Zara stepped closer.

Closing the distance this time.

Her heels clicking softly against the floor.

"That this is a mistake," she said quietly.

A pause.

"That I'm not worth the trouble."

Lucien didn't answer.

Zara's eyes sharpened.

"Say it," she repeated.

Because if he said it—

She could end it.

Control it.

Walk away clean.

But Lucien?

He didn't give her that.

Instead—

He stepped even closer.

Close enough that her breath brushed against his.

Close enough that the space between them disappeared completely.

"No," he said.

Soft.

Certain.

Final.

Zara's heartbeat shifted—just slightly.

"You're not walking away," he continued quietly.

A pause.

"And neither am I."

That was it.

That was the moment.

Zara should have stepped back.

Should have shut it down.

Should have reminded him exactly who she was.

But she didn't.

Because something in the air had changed.

Something she didn't fully control anymore.

Her voice dropped slightly.

"You're making a mistake," she whispered.

Lucien's gaze fell briefly to her lips.

Then back to her eyes.

"Then let me."

And before she could respond—

He closed the distance.

This time—

There was no hesitation.

His hand moved to her waist again, pulling her just close enough—

Not forcing.

Not taking.

But making it impossible to ignore.

And then—

He kissed her.

Not soft.

Not rushed.

Not careless.

Controlled.

Intentional.

Certain.

Like everything about him.

Zara froze.

Just for a second.

Because this wasn't like the tension before.

Wasn't like the teasing.

Wasn't like the power plays.

This was real.

And for that brief moment—

She didn't push him away.

Her fingers tightened slightly against his arm.

Her control slipping—just a fraction.

Then—

She pulled back.

Fast.

Sharp.

Like she had just remembered herself.

Her eyes locked onto his.

Breathing steady—but not entirely calm.

"You don't get to do that," she said.

Lucien didn't step back.

Didn't apologize.

Didn't break eye contact.

"I just did."

Silence.

Heavy.

Explosive.

Zara's lips parted slightly—

But no words came out immediately.

Because for the first time—

That hadn't gone according to plan.

Across the room—

Sienna slowly lowered her glass.

"…Oh," she whispered.

Cassian exhaled quietly.

"Well," he said, almost impressed.

"That just changed everything."

And they were right.

Because now—

This wasn't just a game.

This was something neither of them could undo.

Zara straightened slowly, her expression returning—sharp, controlled, untouchable.

But her voice?

Still carried a trace of something new.

"You're going to regret that," she said quietly.

Lucien's lips curved slightly.

"No," he replied.

A pause.

"You are."
