CHAPTER 16 – "Make It Public"

The news broke before sunrise.

It didn't whisper.

It didn't hint.

It detonated.

"ZARA VALTORIA AND LUCIEN VALTIERI CAUGHT IN INTIMATE MOMENT."

"BUSINESS RIVALS TURN LOVERS?"

"THE QUEEN FINALLY CLAIMED?"

Images flooded every major platform.

Grainy—but clear enough.

Lucien's hand at her waist.

Zara close. Too close.

The moment before the kiss.

And worse—

The moment after.

It spread like wildfire.

Because this wasn't just gossip.

This was power.

Two empires.

Two names that never bowed—

Now tied together.

Zara Valtoria woke up to chaos.

Her phone didn't stop ringing.

Messages stacked endlessly.

Investors. Media. Associates.

All asking the same thing—

What is this?

She didn't answer.

She didn't react.

She simply stood in front of her mirror—

Dressed already in a fitted ivory suit, diamonds catching the morning light, her expression calm.

Perfect.

Untouchable.

But her eyes?

Cold.

"They're waiting downstairs," her assistant said carefully.

"Media?"

"Yes."

Zara picked up her sunglasses.

"Good."

Outside—

Cameras flashed the second she stepped out of her Mercedes-Maybach S-Class.

Questions hit her instantly.

"Miss Valtoria, is the relationship real?"

"Are you and Lucien Valtieri engaged?"

"Was last night a confirmation?"

Zara didn't stop walking.

Didn't rush.

Didn't flinch.

Then—

She stopped.

The crowd went silent.

Slowly, Zara turned.

Removing her sunglasses with deliberate precision.

Her gaze swept across them—

Sharp. Controlled. Dangerous.

"You're all very interested in my personal life," she said calmly.

A pause.

"Unfortunately for you—"

Her lips curved slightly.

"I don't do public explanations."

Gasps. Murmurs.

More questions. Louder now.

But Zara?

She turned and walked away.

Because attention—

Was something she controlled.

Not something she fed.

Across the city—

Lucien watched the same headlines.

Unbothered.

Calm.

Expected.

Victor leaned against the desk.

"Well," he said, "you wanted her attention."

Adrian smirked faintly.

"You just got the whole world's instead."

Lucien picked up his jacket.

"This was always going to happen."

Victor raised a brow.

"Was it?"

Lucien didn't answer.

Because he wasn't interested in the noise.

He was interested in her reaction.

And Zara Valtoria?

Never reacted quietly.

By noon—

The second wave hit.

Not from the media.

From Zara.

A new headline replaced the old.

Bigger.

Sharper.

More deliberate.

"ZARA VALTORIA SEEN WITH MYSTERY BILLIONAIRE AT PRIVATE LUNCH."

Photos followed.

Clear.

Intentional.

Zara—

Laughing.

Relaxed.

Seated across a man just as powerful, just as wealthy.

Close enough to suggest interest.

Far enough to avoid confirmation.

The message was clear.

She wasn't claimed.

She wasn't tied.

She wasn't his.

Lucien saw it.

Of course he did.

Adrian exhaled slowly.

"There it is."

Victor shook his head.

"She's good."

Lucien's gaze didn't change.

Didn't darken.

Didn't crack.

But his next move?

Immediate.

"Prepare the board," he said calmly.

Victor frowned slightly.

"What are you planning?"

Lucien picked up his phone.

Already dialing.

"Something public."

That evening—

The city gathered again.

Another event.

Another stage.

Another opportunity.

Zara arrived last.

Of course.

This time in a striking red gown.

Bold.

Provocative.

Impossible to ignore.

Her entrance alone silenced the room.

But she wasn't alone.

The same man from earlier stood beside her.

Confident.

Interested.

A statement.

Zara walked in like she owned the night.

Because she did.

Until—

The doors opened again.

Lucien Valtieri stepped in.

Alone.

And somehow—

That was louder.

The room shifted instantly.

Because now?

This wasn't speculation.

This was confrontation.

Their eyes met across the room.

Zara didn't look away.

Didn't hesitate.

Didn't break.

But something in her expression sharpened.

Because she knew—

He didn't come here to watch.

He came to act.

Lucien walked forward slowly.

Deliberately.

Ignoring everyone else.

Ignoring the man beside her.

Ignoring the entire room.

Until he stood right in front of her.

Silence.

"Busy day?" he asked calmly.

Zara's lips curved faintly.

"Very."

Lucien's gaze flicked briefly to the man beside her.

Then back.

"You're making this public," he said.

Zara tilted her head.

"You started it."

A pause.

Sharp.

Lucien stepped closer.

Not touching.

But close enough to shift the air again.

"Then let's finish it."

Zara's eyes narrowed slightly.

"Careful," she said softly.

Lucien didn't stop.

And then—

He did something no one expected.

He reached for her hand.

Not forceful.

Not hesitant.

Just… certain.

The room erupted.

Cameras flashed instantly.

Gasps. Voices. Movement.

Zara stilled.

Just slightly.

Lucien's grip was steady.

Unshaken.

"If they're going to talk," he said quietly, only for her to hear—

A pause.

"Let's give them something real."

Silence crashed between them.

Zara's heart didn't race.

She didn't panic.

She didn't lose control.

But for the first time—

She didn't immediately pull away.

Because this?

This wasn't pressure.

This wasn't force.

This was a challenge.

Public.

Unavoidable.

Her lips curved slowly.

Dangerous.

Excited.

"You really don't know when to stop," she whispered.

Lucien's eyes held hers.

"No," he said.

And for the first time—

Zara didn't know if she wanted him to.
