Chapter 138: The Black Rayquaza Descends — It Rivals the Gods!
"Looks like it's given up."
A few minutes passed. The Rayquaza showed no signs of rising again. Mammon felt the situation settle.
Even with its brawler's instincts, this Rayquaza apparently had enough sense to recognize when it was outmatched. Once it had taken enough punishment, it stopped.
Seeing Rayquaza's intent to fight evaporate, Deoxys shifted back to its standard form and descended slowly to Mammon's level.
Worth noting: Mammon was currently standing on a rooftop. High ground made for better situational awareness.
"Thank… you… human."
A hollow, mechanical telepathic voice registered in Mammon's mind — stilted and uneven, like a language being used for the first time. Deoxys, clearly unaccustomed to communication.
"Don't mention it. But I'd ask you not to blame Rayquaza either — that's its responsibility."
Mammon shook his head.
He genuinely believed it. The conflict between Rayquaza and Deoxys couldn't be laid entirely at Rayquaza's feet. Deoxys was an extraterrestrial organism of extraordinary power — and who could guarantee it posed no threat to this planet?
The film told him these two particular Deoxys were benign. But from Rayquaza's position, the calculus was different. A visitor from space, powerful enough to be a genuine threat — eliminating it was the simplest solution. Whether out of territorial pride or genuine planetary protection, better to err on the side of elimination. It was an extreme position, but it was comprehensible.
Consider the alternative. If a Deoxys were hostile, the damage it could cause would be incalculable. Something like Solrock or Clefairy from the same source was manageable — they were relatively weak. Deoxys was not.
Galar had an instructive example, after all.
Terapagos had arrived with a meteorite two thousand years ago and slept for most of it — until three thousand years ago, starved for energy, it woke and began absorbing everything Galar had. What followed nearly wiped out the entire region. It was only the arrival of Zacian and Zamazenta that stopped it.
That was what a powerful legendary Pokémon in the wrong circumstances could do. Rayquaza eliminating strong extraterrestrial visitors was, in that light, not wrong. Harsh, absolute, uncompromising — but not without logic.
"It's… all right. Next… I need to find… my partner."
Deoxys indicated it held no grudge against Rayquaza. Its temperament really was remarkably gentle.
It was worried. It wanted to find Individual One.
"I understand. Be careful, though — that's not the only Rayquaza out there. Keep your presence concealed this time."
Mammon considered it for a moment, then stepped back. He couldn't very well stop it when it looked at him like that.
"Yes. Thank… you."
Deoxys's body rose slowly. The vast psychic range expanded outward again — beginning to triangulate Individual One's position.
I wonder if the Rayquaza is catchable.
Mammon studied the badly hurt Rayquaza on the ground, eyes narrowing.
Compared to Deoxys, Rayquaza was obviously the better prize. That didn't need discussion. Rayquaza's power was self-evident — and once it learned Dragon Ascent, Mega Evolution became available to it. Uniquely, Mega Rayquaza required no Mega Stone: the meteorite energy its body contained served as the catalyst. Dragon Ascent was the key. Without the move, a large quantity of Key Stones could substitute — that was what Zinnia's sister had done. There was also the method involving the Jade Orb and natural energy, but that was functionally similar.
The problem is the attitude.
Mammon rubbed the back of his neck. Much more than Deoxys, he wanted this Rayquaza.
But high-tier legendaries like Rayquaza couldn't be captured through brute force alone. They needed to acknowledge the Trainer. Without genuine recognition, a Poké Ball wouldn't hold them — and a reluctant legendary was a disaster waiting to happen. Rayquaza's temperament was not forgiving.
How do I get it to recognize me.
He was still working through the problem when—
"It's over."
Cynthia exhaled. The area around them was devastated — but the battle between the two legendaries had ended. That was what mattered.
"I didn't expect it to be Team Rocket who resolved this." Nemona stood with her hands on her hips, frowning thoughtfully. "Mammon is too strong. I don't know how the Hoenn League is supposed to arrest someone like that. Direct battle seems basically impossible."
"Mm. If he left Team Rocket, this world would genuinely be better off." Cynthia sighed quietly.
"True, but that seems really hard to imagine." Nemona tilted her head, then her eyes lit up. "Although — Cynthia-senpai, you have considerable charm. If you could win him over, that might just be the solution."
She grinned. She'd seen the way Mammon looked at Cynthia. He hadn't tried to hide it even slightly.
"That isn't going to happen."
Cynthia shook her head without hesitation.
Nemona was still young. But Cynthia understood the distinction — what Mammon seemed to feel toward her wasn't genuine love. It was something more like desire, keen and possessive. The idea that he might leave Team Rocket over her? Not realistic. He had other plans, deeper ones, and his commitment to the organization ran all the way down.
"I actually don't think Mammon is that bad of a person—" Nemona started.
"That isn't what I—"
Cynthia began to smile at the misunderstanding, then caught something at the edge of her vision.
Her expression changed.
A beam of green light was crossing the sky — straight as a blade, impossibly fast, like a bolt of lightning given form.
The speed was genuinely unbelievable.
"Deoxys!"
Mammon saw it the same instant and shouted the warning.
Deoxys registered it immediately. A wave of cold dread swept through its entire body — the unmistakable sensation of something that could end it.
Deoxys spun and transformed. Body thickening and closing inward.
Defense Forme.
"Mewtwo — stop it!"
Mammon's eyes sharpened. That green projectile—
Dragon Ascent.
A stronger Rayquaza. And one that knew Dragon Ascent — which meant it was absolutely capable of Mega Evolution.
Dark Mewtwo's violet eyes blazed. Both arms spread wide. Psychic energy surged outward in a wave like a breaking ocean.
Control-type Psychic — holding technique.
Dark Mewtwo's full focus bore down on the incoming Dragon Ascent, psychic force wrapping around it, trying to slow it.
The psychic energy was torn apart on contact. More psychic force threw itself at it — and was torn apart again, and again, endlessly — managing only to fractionally reduce the projectile's speed.
Extraordinary.
Deoxys had switched to Defense Forme — converting its psychic reserves into a barrier as fast as it could manage. No time for anything more sophisticated.
BOOM!!
Dragon Ascent accelerated again. It carved through the sky like a blade, leaving a trail of green light behind it — and slammed into Deoxys's psychic barrier.
The impact sound shook the air across the entire district. Deoxys felt an incomprehensible force trying to push through every surface of its being.
The barrier cracked. Fissure lines spread across it like breaking glass.
"ROOAAR!!"
A deep, commanding roar rolled through the sky. Dragon Ascent's green light blazed once more. The barrier gave way.
CRACK.
The green light tore through Deoxys's body in a single stroke. Pain detonated everywhere simultaneously and Deoxys lost all control of its descent, falling.
Dark Mewtwo was already moving — it intercepted Deoxys with psychic force, slowing the fall, and held it steady. Then it looked up at the dragon that had just come to a stop in the sky.
"Mega Rayquaza!!"
The excitement in Mammon's eyes was something he hadn't felt in a long time. He stared up at the magnificent flying dragon.
And it was black.
"Is that — a Shiny? And that form—"
Nemona's eyes went wide as plates. She could barely breathe looking at it.
Brilliant golden streamers flowed from both sides of its jaw, nearly the full length of its body, rippling as it hovered. Its body was a black deeper than any night — long, powerful, suffused with an aesthetic of raw force. On its forehead, a mark like Δ. Across its body's surface, the shape of ∞. Overwhelming. Commanding. Utterly absolute.
The pressure radiating from it was physical. It settled into the air around every living thing beneath it like a weight on the chest.
The Shiny Mega Rayquaza raised its head slowly.
And its gaze — imperious and immovable — moved across the world below it like a god surveying what it owned.
Was this actually Rayquaza? It was too magnificent—
Even Dark Mewtwo, facing it directly, felt the heaviness settle into its body. Every cell it had was screaming the same message, frantic and clear.
What is in front of you is a monster beyond anything you have faced.
Dark Mewtwo glanced at Deoxys. That hit had been devastating. Its body was trembling — and from the left hip downward, there was simply nothing. The Dragon Ascent had not merely struck that section. It had erased it.
Deoxys's regeneration was working. But it would take time.
"Tsk — a black Rayquaza!!"
The heat in Mammon's gaze kept climbing. He'd expected a stronger Rayquaza might appear. He had not expected a Shiny.
How was something allowed to be this beautiful.
Something stirred in Mammon that hadn't stirred in a long time — genuine excitement, a flutter of something intense and immediate.
He wanted this dragon.
And that pressure — the weight of its presence, pressing down on everything beneath it—
It was the most powerful draconic aura Mammon had ever felt. Nothing before had come close.
The Mega Evolution research notes he'd read had described Mega Rayquaza in exactly these terms:
"Its dominion over the heavens is such that it rivals the gods themselves."
He'd read those words. Now he understood them. For anything below it, this Mega Rayquaza wasn't like a god. It was one.
No wonder the Meteor Clan had worshipped Mega Rayquaza as a divine being and called it the Dragon God. A dragon this powerful, this absolute — and one that had saved them. Of course they had.
And then — from somewhere on Mammon's person — one of his Poké Balls began to tremble.
Faintly. Quietly. Resonating with something in the air.
A familiar presence—
