Chapter 137: Rayquaza: You Actually Dared to Hit Me?! Don't You Know Who My Dad Is?!

"You can actually defeat Rayquaza?"

Nemona stared. That was a legendary Pokémon up there. Rumored to have existed for hundreds of millions of years. She'd watched it fire Dragon Pulses that leveled entire high-rise buildings without apparent effort. This wasn't something to be casual about.

"Please don't question my professional competence."

Mammon found Nemona's sheltered worldview rather charming in its own way.

"What do you want this time?"

Cynthia understood instinctively. Mammon didn't do anything without a reason. She just didn't know what he'd ask for yet.

"You'll find out afterward, Cynthia. Don't worry — nothing that violates your principles." His mouth curved.

"...Fine."

Her brow furrowed hard. But with a city's existence on the line, she agreed.

SENPAI!!

The look Nemona turned on Cynthia at that moment was pure, undiluted reverence. Cynthia-senpai is magnificent. This was Hoenn — not even her region — and she was still willing to lower herself to dealing with a criminal organization for the sake of this city's people.

So moving. Nemona was genuinely emotional.

"Agreed." Mammon's gaze on Cynthia was noticeably warmer than before. She really was something.

Whatever she'd decided was right, she would sacrifice for it without flinching. Whatever responsibility she'd chosen to carry, she carried it through.

Time to deal with this Rayquaza.

Mammon looked up.

"ROOAAR!!"

Rayquaza's roar rolled across the sky. Another Dragon Pulse fired toward Deoxys.

And missed again.

Rayquaza was getting irritated. Why wouldn't this infuriating space bug just hold still and let itself be destroyed?

It twisted and drove after Deoxys again. Annoying — it had just dealt with one of these things a few years ago, and now another one had appeared. Didn't matter. Handle it again. It would be tedious, but the outcome was never in doubt.

Because it was Rayquaza.

It paid no attention to the human city below getting torn apart by its stray shots. Setting aside that it was here to eliminate a legitimate threat — it glanced down and something shifted cold behind its eyes.

Not all humans were worth protecting anyway.

"ROOAAR!"

Another Dragon Pulse screamed toward Deoxys, who dodged fluidly and immediately launched back in.

Psycho Boost — Attack Forme.

Deoxys's attack caught Rayquaza clean under the jaw. Rayquaza bellowed in pain.

The damage was limited — Deoxys was currently in Speed Forme, not Attack — but it landed, and pain made Rayquaza's aggression sharpen further.

Rayquaza snarled. Its claws blazed green, slashing toward Deoxys.

It knew the claw probably wouldn't connect — experience had taught it that much. But that was fine. When Deoxys dodged, it would have a Dragon Pulse ready. Let's see how long this little bug can keep dancing.

But right then.

A ferocious beam of ice slammed into Rayquaza from behind.

Rayquaza registered it instantly — a cold so intense it raised every scale on its body.

It whipped around, Dragon Pulse already releasing from its jaws.

Dragon Pulse met Ice Beam in midair. The two attacks strained against each other for a fraction of a second and detonated.

"ROOAAR!! (WHO?! HOW DARE YOU SUCKER-PUNCH ME, YOU—!)"

Rayquaza's roar of pure fury tore across the sky. Did this thing not know who it was dealing with? Sneaking up on Rayquaza with an Ice Beam — did it have a death wish?!

The smoke thinned. Two points of deep violet light sharpened into focus. Dark Mewtwo — without its limiter armor — looked back at Rayquaza with an expression of complete, unimpressed calm.

What is this thing?

Rayquaza studied the black Pokémon with its powerful aura. It didn't recognize it.

Didn't matter. It had attacked first.

That made it an enemy.

Rayquaza's eyes narrowed slightly, calculating angles. Time to show this pitch-black nuisance what the Rayquaza lineage was actually capable of.

Deoxys Individual Two looked at Dark Mewtwo, eyes flickering. It remembered — that human was actually willing to help it?

A genuinely good person.

"Can you use Ice Beam?"

A male voice appeared in Deoxys's mind, making it start.

Mammon — using Dark Mewtwo as a psychic relay to establish a link.

Deoxys nodded. Yes. And it recognized the voice.

"Then use Ice Beam. Switch to Attack Forme."

A brief hesitation. Then Deoxys followed the instruction.

Its body shifted — arms condensing to two, the protrusions on its head extending. The silhouette changed.

Attack Forme.

Deoxys brought its arms together. Ice-blue energy condensed rapidly between them.

Ice Beam.

It fired.

Rayquaza's senses were sharp — it caught the incoming beam immediately, turned, and answered with Dragon Pulse.

Dragon Pulse collided with Deoxys's Ice Beam.

And Attack Forme Deoxys's Ice Beam began to push through.

Its Special Attack in this form was extraordinary. The Dragon Pulse started losing ground.

Rayquaza snarled — but what truly ignited its fury was the thing behind it.

Another Ice Beam.

Dark Mewtwo, cold and unhurried, fired directly at Rayquaza's back.

Caught from both directions, Rayquaza couldn't prioritize. Its focus fractured. It cursed these two underhanded, cowardly opponents in the back of its mind — but cursing them didn't stop Dark Mewtwo's Ice Beam from landing.

Ice-type. Against a Dragon and Flying dual-type Rayquaza.

Four times effective.

BOOM.

Rayquaza screamed. Its massive body lost altitude uncontrollably, crashing into the earth below. Frost spread rapidly across the green scales where the beam had hit.

The sheer weight of the impact made the ground shudder. Dust erupted in every direction.

Dark Mewtwo's Ice Beam had hit hard.

Rayquaza's constitution was exceptional — but without Mega Evolution, the four-times weakness to Ice wasn't going anywhere.

"Wild Pokémon." Mammon clicked his tongue. "No tactical sense. If Deoxys had gone straight to Ice Beam from the start, this flying green caterpillar would've been down twenty minutes ago."

He'd give it credit for the bulk. But three Ice Beams from Attack Forme Deoxys — he was confident that was the number. This wasn't a game where damage was calculated in tidy fractions of HP. This was the real world, and Rayquaza's physique was real — but the four-times weakness was just as real, and three direct hits from a Pokémon with Attack Forme Deoxys's Special Attack output was going to put anything down.

Three hits and it's seeing stars.

"ROOAAR!!!"

Not long after — Rayquaza's roar again, more furious than before. It launched itself back into the air, frost still clinging to its scales, glaring at Dark Mewtwo with undisguised murderous intent.

You— How DARE you hit Rayquaza twice in a row, you piece of—

Its rage was incandescent. It was not letting this go.

Rayquaza fired Dragon Pulse at Dark Mewtwo and immediately drove forward after it.

Dark Mewtwo drew up a deep violet psychic barrier and held the Dragon Pulse.

It was stronger than it had been during the battle with Ho-Oh. The time since had not been wasted.

Rayquaza slammed into the barrier. The barrier staggered — but held. Just barely, but it held.

"Ice Beam."

Deoxys appeared behind Rayquaza's back. It fired — aiming for the head.

Rayquaza's instincts fired. It spun and dodged.

Fast. Fast enough to escape Attack Forme Deoxys's aim.

Rayquaza turned its glare on Deoxys, furious—

And then a second wave of cold pain erupted from behind.

Dark Mewtwo's Ice Beam. Right between the shoulder blades.

Rayquaza howled. Lost altitude again. Crashed into a building, bringing it down.

"This is just what a coordinated two-on-one looks like." Mammon laughed quietly. "This Rayquaza is too straightforward. One moment's distraction is all it takes."

Unforgivable. Unforgivable. UNFORGIVABLE.

Buried in rubble, Rayquaza ground its teeth.

It wanted to get airborne again. It wanted to tear both of those dishonorable opponents into pieces — what kind of battle was this, ganging up on it with no sense of fair combat whatsoever?

But two Ice Beams. The damage from those two hits was serious. Its entire body was in pain.

And — it had to acknowledge — it couldn't fight both of them at once. Not efficiently. They'd worked out a rotation.

One on one, Rayquaza was certain it wouldn't lose.

Because it was Rayquaza.

In that case—

"ROOAAR!!"

Rayquaza unleashed the loudest roar it had produced all day — a roar that carried differently from everything before, traveling far out across the sky.

Dragon call.

Staring through the dust cloud at the two blurred shapes above, Rayquaza seethed.

You actually brought me down to this. You dared.

You don't know who I have in my corner. You just wait.

Wait until my father gets here. Let's see how smug you are then.

"Hm?"

Mammon caught the difference. That roar — something about it was distinct from all the ones before. The shape of it was different.

Distress call.

He narrowed his eyes and reached into his dimensional pack, pulling out something he hadn't used yet. It seemed the time had come.

Nearby—

"It actually defeated Rayquaza."

Nemona stared at the spot where Rayquaza had crashed — no sign of it rising again.

That Mewtwo — without its armor — was that powerful?

"Mammon — he's still been holding back."

Cynthia pressed her lips together, gaze fixed on Dark Mewtwo high above. She'd never seen it in this form. The limiter armor had been absent. Mega Evolution? A form change? Neither quite fit.

But there was no question about the conclusion. When Mammon had fought Steven, Giovanni, and herself in Rustboro — that hadn't been his full strength.

Even if we get Mega Evolution—

Cynthia's thoughts grew complicated. Can we actually beat him?

In the ozone layer above, invisible to anyone below—

A figure of magnificent presence was moving at high speed toward the region known as Hoenn. Two bands of brilliant, iridescent light trailed behind it as it flew, rippling with every shift of its course.

Beautiful enough to make you forget yourself entirely.
