Chapter 8 - The First Threat

They didn't stop moving.

Not after that.

Not after it.

The forest didn't give them a direction but standing still felt worse than walking blind. So they moved, slow and controlled, every step placed with intention.

No one spoke for a while.

Because speaking felt like breaking something fragile.

The silence didn't last.

A sound broke it.

Soft.

Close.

A rustle through low brush just ahead.

All three of them froze instantly.

Rion's eyes snapped toward it. "…There."

Kai lifted a hand slightly.

Wait.

The leaves shifted again.

And something stepped out.

Small.

Low to the ground.

At first glance, it almost looked… harmless.

About the size of a large cat, its body lean, covered in short, uneven fur that shifted in tone depending on how the dim light hit it. Its limbs were slightly too long for its frame, joints bending in ways that didn't look entirely right.

Its head tilted.

Watching them.

Curious.

Lira exhaled slowly. "…It's not"

"Don't," Kai said quietly.

Because something about it wasn't right.

Not the size.

Not the shape.

The stillness.

It wasn't cautious.

It wasn't afraid.

It was… assessing.

Rion stepped slightly forward. "…It's small."

Kai didn't look away from the creature. "That doesn't matter."

The creature's head tilted further.

Then it took a step closer.

Light.

Silent.

Too silent.

Lira's voice dropped. "…Why isn't it scared?"

That was the wrong question.

The right one was

Why isn't it backing away?

Rion's jaw tightened. "If it's aggressive, we take it down now."

"Rion"

Too late.

He moved.

Fast.

Grabbing a thick branch from the ground and lunging forward with a sharp swing aimed at the creature's side.

The impact landed.

A solid crack against its body.

For a fraction of a second

Nothing happened.

Then everything did.

The creature's body twisted unnaturally mid-impact, limbs bending at impossible angles as it absorbed the force. Its head snapped toward Rion, eyes widening

Not in pain.

In fury.

Its mouth split open.

Too wide.

Far too wide for its size.

Rows of thin, needle-like teeth revealed as a sharp, piercing screech tore through the forest.

Lira flinched. "Rion!"

The creature launched.

Not backward.

Forward.

Straight at him.

Faster than it had any right to be.

Rion barely had time to react, throwing the branch up as the creature slammed into him. The force knocked him off balance, claws scraping against the wood, teeth snapping inches from his face.

"Get it off!" he shouted.

Kai moved instantly.

"Down!"

Rion dropped.

Kai grabbed another branch thicker, heavier and drove it forward, striking the creature mid-air as it twisted.

This time, it reacted.

But not by retreating.

It adapted.

Its body coiled around the branch, claws digging in, using the momentum to launch itself again this time past them.

It landed.

Then turned.

Its movements were sharper now.

More erratic.

More… deliberate.

Low to the ground, circling.

Not attacking blindly anymore.

Learning.

"…It's adjusting," Kai said, voice low.

Rion pushed himself up, breathing hard. "Yeah, I noticed!"

The creature darted left

Then right

Then vanished into the brush.

For half a second, everything went still again.

Then

It burst out from the side.

Faster.

Targeting Rion again.

"Move!" Kai snapped.

Rion dodged back, but the creature didn't follow his movement.

It predicted it.

Changing direction mid-lunge.

Closing the gap.

Too fast.

Too precise.

Kai grabbed Rion's arm and pulled hard.

"Run!"

This time

They did.

Branches snapped underfoot as they sprinted through the forest.

The creature followed.

Not crashing through the terrain.

Flowing through it.

Its movements barely made sound, but they could feel it behind them.

Closing in.

Lira stumbled slightly. "It's still there!"

"I know," Kai said.

His eyes scanned ahead rapidly.

Looking.

Calculating.

Terrain.

Distance.

Options

There.

A slope.

Steep.

Loose soil, roots exposed along the incline.

"Down!" Kai shouted, veering toward it.

Rion didn't question it this time.

They changed direction sharply, heading straight for the drop.

Behind them

That screech again.

Closer.

The creature lunged.

Kai didn't slow.

"Slide!"

He grabbed Lira's arm and pushed forward as they hit the edge.

The ground gave way beneath them.

All three slid down the slope, dirt and loose rock breaking under their weight.

Controlled chaos.

Painful but fast.

Above them

The creature followed.

But it didn't adapt fast enough.

Its claws hit the loose soil

And slipped.

Its momentum carried it forward, but without control.

It tumbled.

Not gracefully.

Not precisely.

For the first time

It lost something.

Balance.

Kai saw it.

"Keep going!"

They hit the bottom hard, scrambling up instantly and pushing forward again.

No hesitation.

No looking back.

Only when the sounds behind them faded

When the forest swallowed the noise again

Did they stop.

Breathing hard.

Hearts pounding.

Lira bent slightly, catching her breath. "…Is it gone?"

Rion looked back, eyes scanning. "…I don't see it."

Kai didn't relax.

Not fully.

"…It's not dead."

That much was certain.

Rion let out a sharp breath, running a hand through his hair. "…Yeah. Got that part."

Lira looked between them. "…It looked so small…"

Kai's gaze hardened slightly.

"That doesn't matter here."

Rion exhaled slowly, his earlier confidence gone, replaced with something more grounded.

"…Yeah," he muttered. "Lesson learned."

Kai glanced back toward the slope.

"…Everything here is dangerous."

A pause.

Then more quietly

"Even the things that don't look like it."

Silence settled again.

But it wasn't the same as before.

It wasn't uncertainty.

It was understanding.

This world didn't follow their expectations.

Didn't care about size.

Or appearance.

Or hesitation.

It only cared about one thing.

Survival.

And now

So did they.
