Chapter 14 - Signs of Civilization

Morning didn't feel like morning.

There was light.

There was warmth.

But there was no sense of safety that usually came with it.

Only visibility.

Only clarity.

Of how exposed they were.

They moved early.

No discussion.

No hesitation.

Staying in one place too long felt like a mistake waiting to happen.

The forest looked the same.

It always did.

Trees stretching endlessly.

Ground uneven but manageable.

Silence pressing in from all sides.

But something had changed.

Not in the world.

In them.

Rion spoke less.

Not quiet.

But restrained.

Like he was listening more than reacting.

Lira stayed closer again.

Her eyes no longer drifting.

They searched.

Constantly.

And Kai

Watched everything.

With purpose now.

Not just instinct.

They walked for what felt like hours.

No creatures.

No boundaries.

No reflections.

Just

Forest.

"This is starting to feel wrong in a different way," Rion muttered.

Kai glanced at him. "Explain."

Rion gestured vaguely around them. "Before, everything was trying to kill us."

"Now nothing is."

Lira frowned slightly. "That's worse."

No one disagreed.

Kai slowed.

Not suddenly.

Gradually.

His eyes narrowing slightly.

"Stop."

They did.

Immediately.

Rion scanned the area. "What is it?"

Kai didn't answer.

He stepped toward a nearby tree.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Like approaching something that might react.

At first

It looked normal.

Rough bark.

Natural grooves.

Nothing unusual.

Then

He saw it.

A line.

Too straight.

Too deliberate.

Cut into the surface.

His hand lifted.

Hovering just above it.

Not touching.

Not yet.

"Kai?"

Lira's voice was cautious.

"Come here," he said quietly.

Rion approached first.

Then Lira.

Both stopping just behind him.

Kai stepped aside slightly.

Letting them see.

The mark wasn't deep.

Not large.

But unmistakable.

A carved line.

Vertical.

Clean.

Intentional.

Rion leaned in slightly. "That's not natural."

"No," Kai said.

"It's not."

Lira's eyes traced the line.

"Someone did this."

The word settled between them.

Someone.

Rion straightened slightly, scanning the forest again.

"So we're not alone."

Kai didn't respond immediately.

Because that part

They already knew.

He stepped closer again.

This time

His fingers touched the mark.

Lightly.

Carefully.

The surface was rough.

But the cut

Was smooth.

Too precise for an accident.

Too controlled for an animal.

"It's recent," Kai said.

Rion blinked. "You can tell that?"

Kai shook his head slightly.

"No moss."

"No weathering."

He ran his thumb lightly along the edge.

"It hasn't been here long."

Silence followed.

Heavier now.

Lira stepped back slightly.

Her gaze moving between the trees.

"Then they're close."

Rion's lips curved slightly.

Not into a smile.

Something sharper.

"Good."

Kai looked at him.

"Why good?"

Rion shrugged lightly. "Because if there are people here, then there are answers."

A pause.

"And maybe a way out."

Lira didn't share his confidence.

"Or new problems."

That hung in the air.

Because both were true.

Kai stepped back from the tree.

"We don't assume anything."

Rion sighed. "You really like saying that."

"Yes."

Kai's gaze shifted.

Moving past the first tree.

To another.

Then another.

"Wait."

He moved.

Faster now.

But controlled.

Stopping at a second tree a few meters away.

Another mark.

Different.

Two lines this time.

Crossing.

Rion followed, his expression sharpening. "Okay… that's not random."

Lira stepped closer, her voice quieter.

"It's a pattern."

Kai nodded once.

"Not decoration."

"Direction."

Rion frowned. "You're saying this is a trail?"

Kai didn't answer immediately.

He looked ahead.

Scanning deeper into the forest.

Then

He saw it.

A third mark.

Farther ahead.

Barely visible.

"Yeah," he said.

"It's leading somewhere."

Silence.

Because that changed everything.

Rion cracked his knuckles lightly. "Well, that solves that. We follow it."

"No."

The answer came instantly.

Rion looked at him. "What?"

"We don't rush toward unknown people in a world like this," Kai said.

Rion scoffed. "And what, we just ignore the only sign of intelligence we've seen?"

Lira stepped in quietly.

"Kai's right."

Rion looked at her. "You too?"

Her gaze didn't waver.

"If they're marking territory…"

A pause.

"Then we might already be inside it."

That landed.

Harder than expected.

Rion exhaled slowly. "Great. So we're either following a path…"

"Or walking into someone's domain."

Kai's eyes remained forward.

Focused.

"Both," he said.

Silence.

The forest felt different now.

Not empty.

Not unknown.

Occupied.

Kai turned slightly.

"We follow."

Rion smirked faintly. "Thought so."

"But carefully."

The smirk faded.

"No noise."

"No assumptions."

"No trust."

Lira nodded.

"And if we see someone?"

Kai's gaze sharpened slightly.

"We observe first."

Rion tilted his head. "And if they see us first?"

Kai didn't hesitate.

"Then we survive."

That answer ended the conversation.

They moved again.

Slower now.

Quieter.

Every step placed with intent.

The markings continued.

One.

Then another.

Then another.

Each one slightly different.

But connected.

Guiding.

Leading.

And the deeper they went

The stronger the feeling became.

Not watched from afar.

But

Expected.

Lira's voice dropped to a whisper.

"Kai."

He didn't look at her.

"I feel it too."

Rion didn't ask.

Because he already knew.

This wasn't just a trail.

It was a message.

And whether it was meant to guide them

Or lure them

They were already following it.
