Chapter 44 - False hope

The intense heat made akane's vision go blurrier.

His electronics gave up.

His movements became shallower.

It was clear that his limit was closing the gap.

There he heard another low hum.

But he brushed it off thinking it was his mind going insane.

Throughout the massacre of dead soldiers.

new movements surged forward.

Akane steadied himself.

The platform felt like it was gonna give up.

But they can just escape to the stronger parts.

They pushed through the front lines.

Formations extremely tight.

As they passed near akane, he noticed they were friendly units.

They're reinforcements.

That sound earlier want an hallucination.

It was the sound of a ship descending.

This caught the mercenaries off guard.

Yet akane didn't lower his guard.

More friendly soldiers moved past him—

taking positions—

locking down streets—

driving the mercenaries back.

For a moment—

it looked like control was returning.

Like maybe—

they survived the worst of it.

Then—

a new sound.

Heavier.

Sharper.

Akane's attention shifted.

The platform felt the intense weight and it lowered.

The soldiers on the platform felt the change of pressure.

From the far end of the platform—

something stepped into view.

Bulky.

Black figures.

It was hard to tell because of the orange and white color inside of kaelara.

The creatures stood upright.

Towering over the soldiers.

"Isn't that a death wish" akane wondered to himself.

Breathing heavily.

Akane took cover poorly.

As he took a gaze he saw.

Thick armored plating.

Heavy limbs.

Glowing optics where a face should be.

It moved—

one step at a time.

Each step cracking the ground beneath it.

Akane was shocked.

Wondering if his hallucination became worser.

Lighting struck them.

But they absorbed it.

Akane's eyes widen

"That's impossible"

"That's like 100,000 joules, am I right?"

Then—

more appeared.

One.

Two.

Five.

A full line of them.

Marching forward.

Not in sync, but still enough to shake the platform.

The engines roared furiously as they try rise upwards.

"New units" akane muttered to himself.

Breathing heavily as he says each word.

The first hybrid stopped.

It raised its arm.

Not carrying a weapon.

The arm shifted—

reconfigured—

into a plasma machine gun.

The soldiers were caught off guard.

Dozens of high heat plasma surged forward.

And in an instant, a line of friendly soldiers. We're gone.

Gunfire erupted again.

Dozens of rounds slammed into the mech—

It only scratched its surface.

No injuries.

No reaction.

It kept walking.

Another mech charged forward—

faster than expected—

slamming into a defensive line—

crushing it completely.

Akane was caught off guard of how fast we're those mechs where.

"They must be machine assisted" akane murmured to himself"

A mech turned—

locking onto his position.

The optic glowed brighter.

Tracking.

Calculating.

Akane stepped forward slightly.

Positioning himself.

Feeling something surge in his body.

He didn't look away.

The mech fired.

Akane moved instantly—

Dodging bullets.

Since the mech was so protected.

Its movement was restricted.

the shot tearing through the soldiers behind him.

More mechs advanced.

Cutting off the friendlies.

Breaking formations.

Destroying everything in their path.

Understanding hitting fast.

They waited for everyone to regroup.

To wipe them all easier.

This wasn't reinforcement.

This was execution.

Again.

A mech stepped closer.

Slow.

Heavy.

Unstoppable.

Akane exhaled slowly.

His vision became dimmer.

Grip tightening.

Eyes locked.

Andrenaline had surged his body again.
