A sudden movement ahead drew her attention. A young man wearing a delivery jacket had climbed out of a compact car and was sprinting toward the pavement, an insulated delivery bag strapped across his back. He slipped between two stationary vehicles, hurried past another, and leaped over a shallow drainage channel without slowing down.
For a moment, Sarah thought he might actually escape. The robbers were occupied with the vehicles behind him, and the delivery rider had already covered a considerable distance before anyone appeared to notice his departure.
"Runner!" a man shouted from beside a black pickup.
The rider didn't look back. He accelerated toward the pavement, pumping his arms as he tried to put more distance between himself and the criminals. However, one of the masked men immediately abandoned the vehicle he had been searching and turned toward him.
