Chapter 28 - Chapter - 28. The mirror reflection

The Queen stepped into the chamber, completely bypassing the lingering, hidden tension in the air as her bright eyes immediately landed on the massive pile of beautifully wrapped presents stacked neatly in the corner of the room.

'Who on earth managed to sneak in here and place all these magnificent gifts in Isla's room?' she wondered aloud, a warm, affectionate smile gracing her lips as she walked gracefully toward the grand bed.

'And it is absolutely astonishing that our little princess is still fast asleep on the grandest morning of her birthday, while we are standing right here, so eagerly waiting to shower her with our wishes!'

The Queen gently sat down on the edge of the plush mattress, leaning in to press a tender, deeply loving kiss against her daughter's forehead to gently wake her.

Isla's heavy eyelids fluttered open, but instead of innocent morning joy, her face was instantly painted with absolute, paralyzing shock.

Her mind raced frantically as she realized she was securely and comfortably tucked under her plush silk sheets; she distinctly remembered collapsing lifelessly onto the freezing stone floor in excruciating agony last night, and her grand bedchamber had been completely destroyed by the violent, swirling winds.

Yet now, every single piece of furniture was perfectly intact, there was no sign of destruction, and the entire room was spotlessly clean.

''How on earth did everything magically return to its exact place, and who gently carried me back into my bed?'' she panicked internally, her breathing growing shallow.

The Queen immediately noticed her daughter's wide, bewildered eyes and deeply confused expression, instantly shooting a concerned, questioning glance back at the King.

'Isla, my sweet child?' the Queen asked gently, her maternal instincts flaring.

'Are you alright? Did something bad happen?'

'Yes, Mom!' Isla blurted out, her voice slightly frantic as she desperately tried to mask her sheer panic.

'I mean, no, no, Mom, absolutely nothing happened! It is simply because I have only just woken up from a very deep sleep, so my mind is just a little foggy and confused right now... that is all, nothing else!'

The Queen let out a soft, knowing chuckle, gently pinching Isla's pale cheek.

'Oh, now I completely understand the reason behind this grumpy, confused little face!

This has absolutely nothing to do with sleep fuzziness; you are simply pouting because we weren't here to wish you a happy birthday exactly at midnight, aren't you?

Well, the truth is, my darling, your father suddenly came up with a spontaneous, late-night plan to... oh, wait, I am so sorry, that was actually supposed to be a massive surprise!'

The Queen waved her hand dismissively, her eyes sparkling with vibrant excitement.

'Just forget I said anything about it!

Leave all of this aside, hurry up and get dressed, and come outside quickly, because today you are going to receive an endless amount of breathtaking surprises!'

The King stepped forward, his eyes carrying a heavy, silent understanding as he looked deeply at his daughter, fully aware of the terrifying ordeal she had survived mere hours ago.

'Happy birthday, my precious child,' he said, his booming voice carrying a profound, hidden weight.

'From this exact day onward, a completely new and extraordinary journey begins for my beautiful girl.'

The Queen blinked, turning to look at her husband with deep, visible confusion knitting her brows. 'Meaning...? I completely fail to understand what you mean.

What new journey?'

The King suddenly stiffened, a flash of nervous panic crossing his face as he desperately began to stammer out a plausible excuse.

'I... well, what else could I possibly mean?

Today, our little girl has officially turned seven full years old, which means she is now stepping forward on the path toward becoming eight.

So, the long, eventful passage of time between her seventh and eighth year... that constitutes a brand new journey, does it not?'

The Queen let out an exasperated, dramatic sigh, shaking her head as she stood up from the bed.

'Honestly, my King, only the heavens and you yourself can possibly understand the bizarre, poetic riddles that come out of your mouth.

Your grand words always fly completely over my head!'

'Isla, my sweet child, please hurry up and get dressed quickly, we will be eagerly waiting for you outside in the grand hall,' the Queen called out warmly as both she and the King turned and gracefully exited the bedchamber, gently clicking the heavy oak doors shut behind them.

Left entirely alone in the sudden, heavy silence of her room, Isla slowly and cautiously pushed herself up from the edge of her plush bed, her body still aching slightly from the brutal, terrifying ordeal of the previous night.

She walked hesitantly toward her grand, full-length mirror to begin meticulously preparing for her birthday celebration, but the very instant her eyes landed on her reflection, her breath completely hitched in her throat.

Staring back at her through the polished glass was not the innocent, fragile image of a seven-year-old princess; instead, her reflection had shifted into a horrific, mesmerizing nightmare—half human, and half colossal, iridescent serpent.

Her mind went completely blank, absolute sheer terror paralyzing her limbs as she stared at the terrifying hybrid creature in the mirror.

"What on earth is happening to me?" she thought, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs as cold sweat broke out across her forehead.

'No, no, no, this cannot be happening today... of all days, there is a massive, lavish party being held in my honor, and hundreds of noble guests from all across the kingdom are going to be there!' she whispered frantically to herself, her small hands trembling violently as she gripped the edges of her vanity table.

'If I suddenly lose control and this monstrous, terrifying form reveals itself in front of everyone, absolutely everything will be utterly destroyed!

What will happen to my grand plans for revenge? What if this glorious, celebratory party ends up becoming the very thing that ruins my entire life?'

Tears of sheer, desperate panic rapidly began to pool in her eyes as the crushing weight of her reality closed in on her.

'Oh gods, please, you have to save me... what on earth am I supposed to do now?' she pleaded to the empty room, her mind spiraling into a deep, inescapable abyss of sheer panic.
