Chapter 104 - Chapter 104: The Breaking Core

The sound beneath Sector Seven spread like a dying heartbeat.

CRAAAAAAACK.

The entire underground cathedral trembled violently as fractures of crimson light spread across the massive cocoon at the center of the chamber. Network cables connected to the Core snapped one after another, releasing bursts of unstable energy that illuminated the collapsing structure in flashes of deep red.

And for the first time since entering Sector Seven—

Primary Source sounded afraid.

"…Core stability critical."

The synchronized individuals throughout the cathedral immediately moved faster, rushing desperately between collapsing systems while crimson projections flickered uncontrollably across the underground walls.

But Ayan barely noticed them.

His attention remained locked entirely on the cocoon.

Because the visions still lingered inside his mind.

Earth.

Normal people.

An ordinary world moving unknowingly toward extinction.

And himself—

Standing somewhere between humanity and convergence.

A bridge-pattern anomaly.

Not fully human anymore.

The Harvester scout slowly observed the failing Core from the ruined center of the cathedral, white eyes glowing faintly beneath the falling debris around it.

"…Synchronization network collapse confirmed."

Its calm voice echoed through the chamber.

"…Civilization viability decreasing."

Aelira's crimson energy flared sharply.

"Be silent."

The scout turned toward her slowly.

"…Emotional instability continues impairing judgment."

Aelira vanished instantly.

BOOOOOOM.

Crimson light exploded across the underground cathedral as her attack slammed directly into the Harvester scout hard enough to tear apart half the shattered floor beneath it.

This time—

The creature didn't remain unharmed.

Black armor-like flesh ruptured violently beneath the impact while several glowing white eyes burst apart across its chest.

Ayan's eyes widened slightly.

Damage.

Real damage.

The scout staggered backward for the first time.

Interesting.

Aelira stood within the crimson explosion silently, silver hair floating around her while countless glowing symbols spread through the air surrounding her body.

And now—

Ayan finally realized something.

She had been holding back this entire time.

The Harvester scout slowly regenerated again, but much slower now.

Its white eyes narrowed faintly toward her.

"…Irregularity level increasing."

Aelira's voice became colder than ice.

"…I told you not to speak about him."

The underground cathedral trembled violently again.

More sections collapsed around them while synchronized individuals screamed orders desperately across the failing structure.

The synchronized woman rushed toward the cocoon.

"…Primary Source!"

Her expression had lost all calm now.

"…The dimensional stabilizers are shutting down!"

The cocoon pulsed unstable crimson light through the cathedral.

"…Impossible…"

The synchronized woman activated several projections rapidly.

Every display showed the same thing.

The Core was cracking from inside.

Not from the Harvester scout's attacks.

From overload.

Ayan's thoughts sharpened instantly.

"…The network's failing because of me."

Silence.

Then Primary Source answered quietly.

"…Partially."

Aelira immediately looked toward the cocoon sharply.

"…Explain."

The cocoon pulsed unevenly.

"…Bridge-pattern anomalies resonate directly with dimensional convergence frequencies."

The crystal at Ayan's side burned hot again.

"…Your presence accelerates synchronization reactions within unstable systems."

Ayan's chest tightened slowly.

Because suddenly—

Everything connected.

The network recognized him because he naturally resonated with convergence itself.

Meaning simply existing near the Core destabilized it.

The Harvester scout noticed immediately.

"…The anomaly acts as a convergence catalyst."

Its white eyes focused intensely toward Ayan.

"…Interesting."

Aelira moved protectively in front of him again.

"…Stay away from him."

The scout tilted its head slightly.

"…Your attachment continues overriding logical preservation."

Aelira answered instantly.

"…And you continue mistaking emotion for weakness."

The scout remained silent briefly.

Then—

"…Incorrect."

The white eyes across its body pulsed softly.

"…Emotion creates predictable failure patterns."

Those words hit harder than expected.

Because Ren failed due to emotional attachment.

Because he refused to sacrifice humanity completely.

Because he chose identity over convergence.

The Harvester considered that weakness.

The network considered it inefficiency.

But Ayan—

For the first time—

Wasn't sure anymore.

The underground cathedral shook violently again.

BOOOOOOOOOOM.

A massive explosion erupted beneath the chamber floor as one of the lower sectors collapsed completely.

The cocoon pulsed wildly afterward.

Cracks spread visibly across its surface now.

Ayan's heartbeat slowed sharply.

Because through those cracks—

He could see something moving inside.

Human silhouettes.

Hundreds of them.

Connected directly into the Core itself.

Primary Source noticed his gaze.

"…The synchronization reservoir maintains network continuity."

Ayan's stomach tightened instantly.

"…Those people are inside you."

Silence.

Then—

"…Integrated consciousness structures."

The answer made his blood run cold.

Not dead.

Integrated.

The network literally absorbed people into itself.

Aelira's expression darkened further.

"…That's why Ren tried destroying the Core."

Primary Source pulsed violently.

"…The previous anomaly misunderstood necessary sacrifice."

Ayan laughed bitterly.

"…No."

His eyes hardened gradually.

"…I think he understood perfectly."

The underground cathedral became silent briefly.

Even the synchronized individuals nearby paused.

Because for the first time—

Ayan fully understood Ren's choice.

Humanity surviving as part of a collective consciousness wasn't survival.

Not really.

It was assimilation.

A slower version of the Harvesters.

Different methods.

Same outcome.

The Harvester scout suddenly spoke quietly.

"…Correct."

Everyone looked toward it immediately.

The creature's white eyes remained fixed on the cracking cocoon.

"…The network only delays convergence."

Primary Source pulsed sharply.

"…Humanity survives through adaptation."

The scout answered calmly.

"…No."

Its voice echoed through the collapsing cathedral.

"…Humanity disappears gradually while believing itself preserved."

Silence crushed the chamber.

Because somewhere deep down—

Everyone knew the scout might be right.

The network changed people until humanity itself became unrecognizable.

The only difference between the Harvesters and the network—

Was speed.

Ayan slowly lowered his sword slightly.

His thoughts finally becoming clear.

Both sides were wrong.

The Harvesters erased humanity entirely.

The network preserved humanity by destroying individuality.

Neither was true survival.

The crystal at his side pulsed softly again.

Warm.

Not painful this time.

Almost responding to his thoughts.

The Harvester scout noticed immediately.

"…The anomaly diverges."

Primary Source pulsed sharply.

"…Impossible."

Ayan slowly looked toward the cocoon.

"…No."

His voice remained calm now.

Steady.

"…You're both making the same mistake."

The underground cathedral trembled violently.

But he continued anyway.

"…You think survival only matters if humanity changes into something else."

The synchronized individuals throughout the chamber stared silently toward him.

Ayan's grip tightened around the sword again.

"…But if people lose themselves completely…"

His eyes shifted between the Harvester scout and the cocoon.

"…Then what exactly survives?"

Silence.

For the first time—

Neither the network nor the Harvester answered immediately.

Interesting.

Because somehow—

Neither system fully understood individuality.

The Harvester scout's white eyes narrowed faintly.

"…Emotional reasoning."

Ayan answered instantly.

"…Human reasoning."

The underground cathedral cracked violently beneath them.

Then—

The Core ruptured.

CRAAAAAAAAAAAAASH.

The cocoon exploded with unstable crimson light as enormous fractures tore across its surface, shockwaves ripping through Sector Seven while synchronized individuals were thrown across the collapsing chamber violently.

And inside the broken cocoon—

Something began waking up.
