Chapter 27 - Chapter 27: Something Doesn’t Add Up

The weight of the coins felt slightly more reassuring this time as Ayan sat at the edge of the bed, turning them slowly between his fingers while the faint noise of the city filtered in through the window, distant but constant. Five silver from the kobold quest, added to what remained, it was more than before, enough to last a little longer, enough to breathe without immediate pressure pressing down on him, but even then, as he stared at them, the same thought returned, quiet but persistent.

"…Still not enough."

It wasn't frustration.

Just understanding.

Because now he knew how this world worked.

Money came with effort.

With risk.

And if he stopped—

Everything would stop with him.

Ayan closed his hand around the coins before placing them away, his gaze lifting slightly as he leaned back, his thoughts moving not toward what he had earned, but toward what he had seen.

Goblins.

Kobolds.

Orcs.

The order in which they had appeared.

The places they had been found.

The way they had behaved.

Something about it didn't sit right.

"…It's not random."

The thought formed clearly.

And once it did—

It didn't leave.

A faint shift in the room drew his attention, and when he looked over, Aelira was already watching him, her silver eyes calm as always, her presence quiet but impossible to ignore.

"You're thinking again."

Her voice was softer than before.

Not questioning.

Just stating.

Ayan let out a small breath.

"…Yeah."

He didn't try to hide it.

Not anymore.

Aelira tilted her head slightly, her gaze resting on him for a moment longer before she spoke again, "About the monsters."

It wasn't a question.

Ayan's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…You noticed too."

A brief silence followed.

Then—

"Yes."

The answer came without hesitation.

Ayan leaned forward slightly, his elbows resting on his knees as he spoke, his tone lower now, more focused. "It's not just that they're appearing more often… it's how they're acting. The goblins before… the kobolds today… they weren't normal."

Aelira listened quietly.

Her expression didn't change.

But she didn't interrupt.

"They're moving closer to villages," Ayan continued, his thoughts aligning more clearly the more he spoke, "Not just wandering. It feels like they're being pushed… or drawn."

Aelira's gaze remained steady on him.

Then she asked, "And what does that mean?"

Ayan paused.

Because—

That was the problem.

"I don't know."

The answer came honestly.

But it wasn't empty.

Because he was already thinking beyond it.

They left the room shortly after, the air outside cooler than before as the evening settled into the city, the streets still active, voices carrying through the space as merchants closed stalls and adventurers moved between locations. Ayan walked without a clear destination at first, his thoughts still occupied, but as they moved, fragments of conversation began to reach him.

"…another report from the north side…"

"…they said the kobolds weren't supposed to be there…"

"…the Order's already looking into it…"

Ayan's steps slowed slightly.

His attention sharpened.

More voices.

More pieces.

"…it's not just one place…"

"…something's wrong…"

Ayan stopped completely this time, his gaze shifting slightly as he listened more carefully, but the conversations blended quickly into the general noise again, leaving only fragments behind.

But that was enough.

"…So it's happening everywhere."

He spoke quietly.

More to himself than anyone else.

Aelira stood beside him, her gaze shifting toward the direction of the voices before returning to him.

"You want to follow this."

Again—

Not a question.

Ayan let out a slow breath.

"…Yeah."

Because now—

It wasn't just about money.

Not just about survival.

If something bigger was happening—

Ignoring it wouldn't help him.

It would only make things worse later.

They made their way back toward the guild, the building just as active as before, but this time, Ayan didn't head straight to the board. Instead, he paused slightly, his gaze moving across the space, observing, listening, searching for something different.

Something—

Specific.

And then—

He saw it.

Not on the main board.

But slightly to the side.

Less noticeable.

A request.

Not a standard quest.

More like a report.

Unusual monster activity near a smaller trade route.

Reward not fixed.

Details unclear.

Ayan stepped closer.

Reading it again.

"…This is it."

Aelira moved beside him, her gaze following his.

"This is not a normal request."

Her voice was quiet.

But certain.

Ayan nodded.

"I know."

That was exactly why he chose it.

Not because it was safe.

Not because it paid well.

But because—

It meant something.

He reached out and took the request.

And for the first time since arriving in this world—

His decision wasn't just about surviving the next day.

It was about understanding what was coming next.

As he turned away from the board, the noise of the guild continuing around him, the weight of that choice settled in fully.

Because this time—

He wasn't just reacting.

He was searching.

And whatever he found—

Would change everything.
