Chapter 31 - Chapter 31: The Things Left Unsaid

The city continued as if nothing had changed, the same noise, the same movement, the same rhythm of life flowing through its streets, but to Ayan, everything felt slightly distant now, as though he were watching it from somewhere just outside of it. The conversation in the guild, the reaction of the manager, and most importantly, the fact that this was not the first report, all of it lingered heavily in his mind as he walked beside Aelira, his thoughts far from settled. He had expected confusion, maybe even disbelief, but not recognition, and definitely not the quiet acceptance he had seen in the man's eyes. That alone told him something was already known, just not shared.

His gaze shifted slightly as they walked, taking in the people around him without truly seeing them, his focus turning inward as he began connecting what little information he had, the transformed monsters, their movement toward populated areas, the reports from different locations, and the involvement of the Order. None of it pointed to coincidence, and the more he thought about it, the clearer it became that whatever was happening, it had structure, direction, and purpose, even if that purpose remained completely unknown to him.

"…This didn't just start yesterday."

The thought came quietly, but firmly.

If it had been happening in multiple places, if reports had already been made, then this was something that had been building over time, something that had gone unnoticed or unconfirmed until now, and that realization unsettled him more than the monsters themselves. Because monsters could be fought, understood, categorized, but something that changed them, something that altered their behavior and strength, that was something else entirely.

Beside him, Aelira walked at the same steady pace, her presence unchanged, her expression calm, but now that Ayan was paying closer attention, that calmness felt different, not reassuring, but distant, as if she were observing rather than experiencing. It wasn't the first time he had noticed it, but now, after everything he had seen, it stood out more clearly.

"You're not surprised."

The words left his mouth before he could stop them, his voice quiet but direct, not accusing, but not casual either.

Aelira turned her gaze toward him, her silver eyes resting on him for a moment as if measuring his question rather than reacting to it. "About what?" she asked, her tone as calm as ever.

Ayan held her gaze for a second before looking ahead again, his expression tightening slightly as he spoke. "About all of it. The monsters. The way they're changing. The way the guild reacted." He paused briefly, his thoughts aligning before continuing, "It doesn't feel new to you."

There was a short silence between them, not tense, but noticeable, and when Aelira finally spoke, her answer came without hesitation.

"I already know that this world is unstable."

It wasn't a denial.

But it wasn't an explanation either.

Ayan's eyes narrowed slightly, the response settling in his mind as he tried to interpret it, but the more he thought about it, the more it felt incomplete, like a statement that avoided something deeper rather than addressing it.

"…That's not what I meant."

His voice remained calm, but there was more weight behind it now.

Aelira didn't respond immediately, her gaze shifting forward again, and for a moment, it seemed like she might leave it at that, but then she spoke again, her tone unchanged.

"There are things you don't need to worry about yet."

Ayan stopped walking.

Not abruptly.

But enough.

His gaze remained forward, but his thoughts sharpened instantly.

"…Not need to worry about."

He repeated the words quietly in his mind.

That was the second time.

Not need.

Not yet.

Those weren't reassuring words.

Those were delaying words.

Ayan exhaled slowly before continuing forward again, his pace steady, but his thoughts no longer as scattered as before. Because now, alongside everything else, there was something new to consider.

Not just what was happening in the world.

But what she knew about it.

"…You're hiding something."

The thought came clearly.

But he didn't say it.

Not yet.

Because right now, he didn't have enough to question it properly, and pushing without understanding would only lead to answers he couldn't verify.

They returned to the inn shortly after, the familiar space offering a kind of normalcy that felt almost out of place given everything else, and as Ayan stepped inside, he realized how much had changed in just a short time. Not the environment, not the structure, but his perspective. What had once felt like a temporary resting place now felt like something more fragile, something that could disappear just as easily as it had appeared.

He moved toward the table, sitting down as his thoughts continued to settle, and as he did, he began organizing them more deliberately this time, separating what he knew from what he assumed, and what he didn't understand at all.

The monsters were changing.

That was a fact.

The changes were unnatural.

Also a fact.

The guild and the Order were already aware.

Which meant this wasn't new.

And Aelira—

He paused.

Because that part—

Was unclear.

He leaned back slightly, his gaze lowering as he exhaled again, slower this time.

"…I need more information."

The conclusion came naturally.

Not just from quests.

Not just from fighting.

But from understanding.

If he wanted to survive in a situation like this, reacting wasn't enough anymore, and even strength alone wouldn't solve something he didn't understand.

Across from him, Aelira watched quietly, her expression unchanged, her presence as steady as ever, but now, Ayan didn't look at her the same way as before. Not with distrust, not with suspicion, but with awareness, because whether she intended to or not, she had become part of the unknown he needed to understand.

The room fell into a quiet silence after that, the outside noise distant, the atmosphere still, and as Ayan sat there, his thoughts finally settling into something clearer, something more focused, one thing became certain.

Whatever was happening in this world—

Was bigger than him.

But that didn't mean—

He would stay in the dark.
