Chapter 16 - Enemies Close In

No… this is not happening," Caro whispered, her voice trembling as she stared at the message on her phone. Her fingers tightened around it as if she could erase the words by force. "They would not go this far… they would not involve my family." Her breathing grew uneven as panic rose in her chest. "This has to be a bluff. It has to be." She shook her head, but the fear in her eyes betrayed her.

"It is not a bluff, Caro." Peter's voice came from the doorway, low and controlled, but heavy with tension. She froze instantly before turning sharply to face him. He stepped inside slowly, his gaze fixed on her. "You think I would not find out you left the office without a word?" he continued, closing the door behind him. "Or that I would ignore a threat tied to my company?"

"You should not be here," she said quickly, her voice unsteady as she stood up. She clutched her phone tightly, shaking her head. "You are not supposed to be involved in this." Her eyes filled with fear as she looked at him. "This is my problem, Peter. I will handle it." Her words came out rushed, as if she was trying to convince both him and herself.

"Your problem?" Peter repeated, his tone sharpening as he stepped closer. His eyes darkened slightly as he studied her face. "When someone threatens your family using information connected to my company, it stops being just your problem." He paused, his jaw tightening. "You think you can walk into danger alone and I would simply watch?"

"You do not understand," she said, her voice breaking as she took a step back. "They are watching my mother… my brother… they know everything." She swallowed hard, struggling to stay composed. "If I do not do what they want, they will hurt them." Her gaze locked onto his. "I cannot take that risk."

"And you think giving them what they want will save them?" Peter shot back immediately, his voice rising with controlled anger. He moved closer, his presence overwhelming. "You think handing over company files will make them stop?" He shook his head slowly. "People like that do not stop, Caro. They only push further once you give in."

"I do not have a choice," she insisted, her voice trembling but firm. She stepped closer to him, desperation clear in her eyes. "If anything happens to my family because of me, I will never forgive myself." Her hands shook slightly at her sides. "I would rather lose everything else than live with that."

"You will not lose everything," Peter said, his voice dropping but growing more intense. He reached out, gripping her arm just enough to ground her. "Not while I am here." His eyes searched hers deeply. "You should have told me from the beginning instead of trying to carry this alone."

"And what would you have done?" she asked, pulling slightly away from him, her voice filled with frustration. "Locked everything down and hoped for the best?" She shook her head, her breathing uneven. "That is not protection. That is waiting for something terrible to happen." Her eyes glistened. "I could not take that chance."

"I would have protected you," he replied firmly, his tone unwavering. He released her slowly but did not step back. "All of you." His gaze hardened again. "But instead, you chose to hide this from me and walk straight into a trap." His voice dropped slightly. "Do you have any idea what that could cost you?"

"I did not lie," she said softly, though her voice wavered. She looked down briefly before lifting her eyes back to his. "I just did not tell you everything." She hesitated, then added quietly, "Because I knew you would try to stop me." Her expression softened, but the fear remained.

"Of course I would stop you," Peter said immediately, his voice firm and sharp. He stepped closer again, his gaze intense. "Because what you are doing is dangerous." His tone lowered slightly. "You are walking into the hands of people who want to destroy you." He paused. "And I will not let that happen."

"They already have power over me," she whispered, her voice breaking again. "They have my family." The room fell silent for a moment, the weight of her words settling heavily between them. She looked at him helplessly. "Tell me what I am supposed to do."

Peter exhaled slowly, his expression shifting into something colder and more focused. "Where are you supposed to meet them?" he asked quietly. His tone carried authority now, not just concern. He watched her closely, waiting for an answer.

Caro hesitated, then shook her head firmly. "No," she said, her voice steadier now despite the fear. "I am not telling you." She held his gaze, refusing to back down. "I will not drag you into this."

"You do not get to decide that alone," Peter replied, his tone turning cold. He stepped closer, his eyes locking onto hers. "Not when this involves both of us." His voice dropped further. "You are already in too deep to pretend this is just your fight."

"It is not the same for you," she said, her emotions rising again. "They are not threatening your family." Her voice cracked. "You do not wake up wondering if something will happen to the people you love." She shook her head, overwhelmed. "You do not understand that kind of fear."

Peter went still for a moment, something shifting in his expression. "Do not assume I do not understand fear," he said quietly, his voice carrying unexpected weight. He stepped closer again, softer but intense. "That is exactly why I am not letting you face this alone." His gaze did not leave hers.

Before she could respond, her phone vibrated again, cutting sharply through the tension. Both of them looked down at it immediately. Caro hesitated before unlocking the screen, her hands trembling slightly.

"Read it," Peter said, his voice calm but firm.

Her eyes moved quickly across the message, and her expression changed instantly. "They changed the location," she whispered, her voice barely steady. She looked up at him. "The warehouse was just a test."

"Where now?" Peter asked, his tone tightening.

"They said if I bring anyone… they will not hesitate this time," she replied, her voice shaking as she held the phone tightly. "Peter, I cannot risk it."

Before he could answer, another message came in.

This time, both of them read it together.

Caro's breath caught.

Peter's expression darkened immediately.

A photo had been sent.

He leaned closer, his voice dropping into something cold and dangerous. "They are not just watching your family anymore," he said quietly.

Caro's heart pounded as she looked at him. "What do you mean?"

He turned the phone slightly toward her, his jaw tightening.

"Because now," he said slowly, "they are watching us."

Caro stared at the screen, her breath hitching.

It was a picture of them.

Taken just minutes ago.

Inside her room.
