Chapter 20 - Chapter 20 – The First Kiss

The silence in Peter's office was suffocating, thick with tension that had not yet found its release. Caro stood frozen where she was, her pulse still racing from the accusation that hung between them. She swallowed hard and forced herself to speak, her voice unsteady but determined. "Peter, you have to believe me, I did not access anything," she said, her fingers tightening against the edge of the desk. "I know what it looks like, but I would never do something like that to you. Not after everything… not after you trusted me."

Peter did not respond immediately. He stood a few steps away, the tablet still in his hand, his gaze fixed on her as if he were trying to peel back every layer she had carefully built. "The system says otherwise," he replied quietly, his tone controlled but sharp beneath the surface. "And in my world, evidence matters more than words." He took a slow step closer. "So explain it to me, Caro. Give me one reason why your name is attached to a breach inside my company."

Her chest tightened painfully as she shook her head, her voice breaking despite her effort to stay composed. "Because someone is setting me up," she said, desperation creeping in. "You know there are people who want to bring you down. You exposed Marcus today. You humiliated him in front of everyone. Do you really think he would walk away quietly without trying to hit back?" Her eyes searched for him. "This is not a coincidence. It is retaliation."

Peter's jaw tightened slightly, but his expression remained unreadable. "Marcus does not have the reach to bypass my internal systems without help," he said calmly. "And this breach was precise. Clean. It came from someone who knows how this company works." His gaze hardened just a fraction. "Which brings me back to you."

Caro felt the words like a blade pressing against her chest. "So that is it?" she asked, her voice rising with emotion. "You have already decided I am guilty?" Her hands trembled as she stepped closer to him. "After everything I have done for you, after every risk I have taken just to keep up with your world, you are going to stand there and look at me like I am your enemy?"

Something flickered in Peter's eyes at that, something conflicted, something he quickly pushed down. "Do not twist this into something it is not," he said, his voice low but firm. "This is not personal. This is about security." He paused, then added more quietly, "But the moment your name appeared on that screen, it became impossible for me to ignore."

Caro let out a shaky breath, her heart pounding as frustration and hurt collided inside her. "It is personal to me," she said, her voice softer now but no less intense. "Because you are not just questioning my work. You are questioning me." Her eyes glistened slightly as she held his gaze. "And that hurts more than anything else you could have said."

For a moment, neither of them moved. The tension between them stretched, fragile and dangerous, like something that could snap at any second. Then Peter exhaled slowly, running a hand through his hair as if trying to regain control. "If you are telling the truth," he said, his tone shifting just slightly, "then someone is not only targeting this company. They are targeting you." His eyes locked onto hers again. "Which means you are in more danger than you realize."

Caro's breath caught. "I already know that," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "You think this is the first time they have come after me?" She hesitated, then looked away briefly before forcing herself to continue. "I have been receiving messages. Threats. About my family." Her voice trembled. "I did not tell you because I thought I could handle it on my own."

Peter went completely still.

"You should have told me," he said quietly, but the weight behind the words was unmistakable.

"I was trying to protect you," she replied immediately, stepping closer without thinking. "If they are targeting me, it is because of my connection to you. I did not want to drag you into something that could hurt you." Her voice softened, almost pleading. "I thought if I just kept it under control, if I did what they wanted just enough to keep them away from my family…"

She stopped abruptly.

The realization hit both of them at the same time.

Peter's eyes darkened instantly. "Just enough?" he repeated, his voice dangerously quiet. "What does that mean, Caro?"

Her heart dropped.

"I… I did not mean it like that," she tried to recover, but the damage was already done. Her hands trembled as she struggled to find the right words. "I was just trying to say that I have been dealing with them, that is all. I have not given them anything important. I would never"

"Caro." His voice cut through her words, sharper now, leaving no room for escape. "Look at me and tell me the truth." He stepped closer, his presence overwhelming, his gaze unrelenting. "Have you ever given anyone access to my company's information?"

The question hung between them like a final test.

Caro's throat tightened. Her mind raced, her heart pounding so loudly she could barely think. If she told the truth, she would lose him. If she lied, she would destroy everything anyway. Her lips parted, but no answer came.

Peter's expression shifted, something breaking beneath the surface of his control. "That is what I thought," he said quietly, the disappointment in his voice cutting deeper than anger ever could.

"Peter, please—" she started, her voice cracking as she reached for him instinctively.

He did not step back.

But he did not move closer either.

"Do you have any idea what you have just done?" he asked, his voice low, heavy with restrained emotion. "You stood here and asked me to trust you, and in the same breath, you confirmed that there is something you are still hiding." His eyes searched hers, not cold, not distant, but wounded in a way she had never seen before. "Tell me why I should believe anything you say now."

Caro felt tears sting her eyes, her chest tightening with panic. "Because I am trying to fix it," she said desperately. "I know I made mistakes, but I am still here. I am still choosing you. That has to count for something."

Peter held her gaze for a long moment, the silence stretching unbearably between them. Then, slowly, he reached out and caught her wrist as she tried to pull away, his grip firm but not harsh.

"Then prove it," he said quietly.

Her breath caught.

"Whoever is behind this breach thinks they are untouchable," he continued, his voice steady, controlled, but charged with something darker beneath. "They used your name. They put you in my line of fire." His grip tightened slightly. "So we are going to find them."

Caro's pulse spiked. "We?"

Peter stepped closer, his voice dropping even lower. "You said you are being threatened. That means they will contact you again." His eyes locked onto hers. "And when they do, you are going to let them believe they still control you."

Her heart raced. "You want me to pretend I am still working for them?"

"I want you to lead me to them," he said.

Fear and something dangerously close to hope collided in her chest. "And if they find out?" she whispered. "If they realize I am not on their side anymore…"

Peter's gaze hardened, his voice unwavering. "Then they will have to deal with me."

The intensity of his words sent a shiver down her spine.

For a moment, everything else faded. The accusation. The doubt. The fear.

All she could see was him.

All she could feel was the pull between them.

"I do not know if I can do this," she admitted softly.

Peter's hand slid from her wrist to her waist, pulling her just slightly closer, his touch controlled but impossible to ignore. "You can," he said quietly. "Because you are stronger than you think."

Her breath caught.

"And because I am not letting you face this alone."

The words hit her harder than anything else.

Slowly, almost without thinking, her hands lifted, resting against his chest as if drawn there. She could feel his heartbeat beneath her fingertips, strong, steady, grounding her in a way nothing else could.

"Peter…" she whispered, her voice unsteady.

He did not respond with words.

Instead, his hand moved to her jaw, tilting her face up toward his. His gaze dropped briefly to her lips before returning to her eyes, as if giving her one last chance to pull away.

She did not.

The distance between them disappeared.

The kiss was not rushed. Not desperate. It was restrained, careful, but filled with everything they had been holding back. Weeks of tension, unspoken words, and fragile trust poured into that single moment. Caro felt her breath catch as she leaned into it, her fingers tightening slightly against his shirt.

For a brief second, the world outside did not exist. No threats. No betrayal. No consequences.

Just him. Just this.

Then suddenly, a sharp sound cut through the silence.

A faint click.

Peter pulled back instantly, his entire body going rigid.

Caro blinked, disoriented, her breath uneven as she followed his gaze toward the glass doors leading to the balcony.

"Did you hear that?" she whispered.

Peter did not answer. He moved quickly, crossing the room and stepping out onto the balcony, his eyes scanning the darkness beyond.

Caro followed, her heart pounding.

Across the street, for just a second, something caught the light.

A lens.

Then it vanished.

Peter's expression turned to ice.

"We have a problem," he said quietly.

Caro's stomach dropped. "Someone was watching us?"

"Not just watching," Peter replied, his voice cold and precise. "Recording."

Her breath hitched.

Before she could respond, his phone rang sharply in his hand.

He glanced at the screen, his expression darkening even further.

Then he answered.

"What?" he said.

There was a pause.

Caro watched as something dangerous settled into his gaze.

"Say that again," he said slowly.

Another pause.

Then Peter lowered the phone, his eyes locking onto Caro with a look that made her blood run cold.

"They just released the footage," he said.

Her heart stopped.

"Not to the public," he added quietly. "To my board."

Caro's hands went cold.

Peter's voice dropped, deadly calm.

"And they are calling an emergency vote to remove me… for misconduct."

Silence crashed between them.

And this time…

There was no escape.
