Chapter 122 - Bai Ye, Are You a Humanoid Weapon?
"No problem, I'll let him rest in peace. In exchange, you'll join me as a researcher and help me improve the G Virus. I need a controllable G Virus — not one that turns people into monsters!"
"Alright, but Sherry — you must bring Sherry back safely, and she must stay by my side."
Annette stated her conditions; she agreed to Bai Ye's request, and in turn, Bai Ye also needed to agree to hers.
Moreover, Annette hadn't told Bai Ye one thing: she had very few answers when it came to the direction of G Virus research that Bai Ye envisioned. William had once wanted to pursue that same direction, but he couldn't do it. If it were left to her, Annette couldn't guarantee she could succeed either — after all, even William had failed, and she was no William.
"Don't worry, I'll bring Sherry back to you safely. So we'll go with the conditions we just discussed — no other terms, correct?"
Bai Ye confirmed, and after hearing his words, Annette nodded, then subconsciously glanced at Ada Wong.
She knew this woman was not someone to be trusted easily.
"Oh, she's currently the second-in-command of my organization, so I suppose you can trust her now."
Noticing Annette's gaze, Bai Ye offered an explanation, though upon hearing it, Ada Wong on the side rolled her eyes: "Hey, hey, hey — what do you mean by 'I suppose you can trust her now'?"
This man really had no intention of giving her any face.
Then again, with that kind of strength, he didn't really need to.
Even though Ada Wong felt a flicker of displeasure, she forced herself to suppress it. The main reason was that she had come to one clear conclusion: before fully uncovering Bai Ye's secrets, it was best not to make any unnecessary moves.
Looking at Bai Ye, he was unlike anyone she had ever worked with — even Wesker, with whom she'd had some dealings. Wesker, it seemed, couldn't possibly be Bai Ye's match.
"Alright then, let's deal with this guy quickly!"
In the world of Resident Evil, monsters have many weaknesses, but thanks to their regenerative abilities, some can recover even after being submerged in concentrated sulfuric acid or burned beyond recognition. Yet strangely, what resists every other method can sometimes be solved with a single RPG.
"Right now his regenerative ability is very strong. Based on previous research, the G Virus continuously evolves — but it does have a weakness: that eye..."
Annette's thoughts went to the eye on William's shoulder. That was the current weak point of the G Virus. Without striking it, William would recover with alarming speed.
What a devoted wife.
Although Bai Ye had already known the eye was the weak point, he had to admire how quickly Annette volunteered the information.
With one hand holding William down, Bai Ye drove his other fist directly into the eye on William's shoulder.
Even without drawing on his abilities, the raw power granted by the Eight Gates was enough for his punch to produce a shockwave — a burst of compressed air that cracked the space around his fist.
Just one punch, with the force of an RPG.
"A monster — this man absolutely cannot be a normal person..."
Ada Wong's mouth hung open, her composure entirely abandoned. This Humanoid Weapon — she was convinced now that he had been modified by the T-Virus or something comparable.
And modified very successfully at that. Could it be something like Wesker's case?
"Indeed, regeneration has its limits. Once those limits are exceeded, it can no longer recover."
From the injuries on William, Bai Ye had observed that regeneration operated at a fixed rate — seemingly tied to the speed of cell division, much like Senju Hashirama's regenerative ability. Both were rapid recovery methods, but they consumed cells in the process. Therefore, when subjected to a sustained barrage of powerful attacks — especially strikes to the weak point — more cells were consumed than could be replenished.
The moment the body could no longer keep pace with the destruction, recovery would fail.
William recovered once, and Bai Ye destroyed once. He was simply pinned down and brutally pounded for ten solid minutes.
His regenerative ability began to gradually weaken, and the G Virus seemed to have reached its limit. Despite continuously regenerating and evolving, it was still held in check by Bai Ye's overwhelming force.
As Bai Ye's final punch landed, the G Virus could no longer pull William back from the brink, and he collapsed to the ground like a fallen tree.
"Cut another portion of body tissue to take with us, then burn the rest with gasoline."
Although William appeared dead, Bai Ye couldn't be certain he wouldn't recover later.
Another portion of tissue was cut from William, then gasoline was poured over what remained. Watching William burn fiercely in the flames, a trace of sorrow passed through Annette's eyes.
She hadn't expected that after so many years of research for Umbrella Corporation, it would all end like this.
"Alright, William's matter is settled. Now I'll go bring Sherry to you. Ada, take Annette to collect whatever she needs."
"You're leaving?"
"Mm."
After hearing Bai Ye's words, Ada Wong studied him for a long moment. She was genuinely surprised by his decision to leave — she hadn't expected him to extend this much trust to her.
Logically, this was the moment for Annette to retrieve the G Virus, and with the tissue samples from William already in hand, Ada Wong could simply take everything and walk away without Bai Ye here to stop her.
But thinking back to what Bai Ye had just done to William, she ultimately chose to stay — for now. At the very least, Ada Wong understood that if she chose to betray him at this moment, she would probably spend the rest of her life being hunted by him.
She had no desire to live like that.
After they departed, Bai Ye turned his focus to what needed to be done next.
With the G Virus sample secured, Bai Ye directly accessed the Umbrella system through Red Queen and began extracting data. Annette and the others likely didn't have the clearance for this. Using Red Queen, he copied all available intelligence, including the full G Virus research archive.
He would have Ada Wong and the others strip the underground laboratory of anything useful later. Then, using the Rumble-Rumble Fruit's teleportation ability, Bai Ye arrived directly at the outskirts of the police station.
"Not here yet?"
At the police station entrance, the officer who had been bitten by a zombie was still at his post — which meant Leon had not yet arrived. As for Claire, Bai Ye wasn't certain, since she had used the back entrance.
Ignoring the officer outside, Bai Ye slipped past him and moved quickly into the police station to find a way in.
Inside, Police Chief Brian Irons was searching for Sherry.
This wasn't the first little girl Brian had killed. After Raccoon City descended into chaos, Brian was all too aware that his crimes would likely cost him his life — especially now that Umbrella Corporation had cut him loose.
Consumed by resentment and fury, Brian had decided to make William's daughter — the child of the man who had overseen Umbrella Corporation's research facility in Raccoon City — pay the price. He wanted to kill Sherry.
If he couldn't live, he certainly wasn't going to let Sherry live either.
"Found you!"
Brian peered through a gap in the furniture, his eyes landing on Sherry huddled beneath a table. A cruel gleam lit up his face.
He had finally found her.
Then let Sherry be the first act of his revenge.
"Found you too."
"Who's there?"
Brian spun toward the voice behind him, a surge of shock running through him. He knew the layout of this police station better than anyone — at this hour, everyone was either dead or had fled. No one else should be here.
From the darkness, Bai Ye stepped forward with a dagger in hand. As Brian raised his weapon to fire, the dagger was already through his throat: "The blade is fastest within seven steps."
Pulling the knife free from Brian's body and shaking off the blood, Bai Ye crouched down and looked calmly at Sherry: "Let's go. I made a deal with your mother to bring you to her. You know Annette Birkin, don't you?"
Bai Ye extended his hand toward Sherry, who was still hiding beneath the table, and waited without rushing.
Sherry looked at the outstretched hand hovering in the air, a flicker of fear in her eyes — but something about Bai Ye's gaze made her heart lean toward believing him.
"You really know my mother?"
If he could say her mother's name, he must know her — right?
Sherry reasoned with herself.
"Of course. Now let's go — it won't be safe here for much longer."
Bai Ye kept his tone easy. He could leave at any moment, but if she moved too slowly, she really wouldn't make it out.
"Mm-hmm."
Casting one glance at Brian lying in a pool of blood, Sherry nodded and crawled out from under the table, her small feet angled slightly away, ready to bolt at the first sign of danger. If Bai Ye showed even the slightest ill intent, she would run without hesitation.
Watching the little girl's careful movements, Bai Ye chuckled inwardly. Quite the vigilant one — that was a good thing.
"Let's go. We just need to pick up one more person before we can leave."
With that, Bai Ye took the lead, letting Sherry follow at a comfortable distance behind him. At a corner, a loud crash rang out — and a figure was hurled into the wall by a Tyrant.
Jill's lips were stained with blood, and her eyes were filled with despair.
She had believed she could turn things around, but now it was clear she was nothing more than an ant in all of this, and her time was running out. It seemed the debt she owed Bai Ye would go unrepaid.
"Miss, it seems you could use some help!"
Jill heard a familiar voice close to her ear, and then the hand clamped around her throat was severed. Beside her stood Bai Ye, smiling: "It seems you can't change this world on your own!"
With that, he turned and dispatched the Pursuer in short order. The enemy she had believed impossible to defeat was handled by Bai Ye with almost casual ease.
"I owe you again."
Jill rolled her neck to ease the soreness, stood up, and said quietly.
"Is that so? It seems you have no intention of repaying it."
"Is your organization really nothing like Umbrella?"
Jill was quiet for a moment, then looked directly at Bai Ye and asked.
She knew her current strength was simply not enough to go up against Umbrella.
And as she had said before, this world was already unrecognizable.
She needed to find people who shared her convictions.
"That's right. I'm not in the business of creating bioweapons — I'm working to modify the T-Virus and similar agents into something suitable for human use. And as I said before, this world is already in chaos. Ordinary people can't fight the way they used to."
Even Jill herself — hadn't she been affected by the virus in the game?
To call these protagonists ordinary people was simply impossible.
"I'll join — but if your organization turns out to be anything like Umbrella, I'll leave without hesitation."
"Fair enough. Though unfortunately, you can only be third-in-command now."
Bai Ye had originally intended for Jill to be his second-in-command, but Ada Wong had gotten there first.
"Sherry, let's go."
"Mm-hmm, okay, big brother."
Sherry obediently fell into step behind Bai Ye as the group prepared to leave.
As for Jill, she seemed to have many questions but didn't know where to begin.
"Go ahead — if there's something on your mind, just say it."
Noticing Jill's hesitant expression, Bai Ye smiled. There was something endearing about it.
"Have you been modified?"
Jill had held back for a long time, but finally couldn't stop herself from asking.
Even Sherry glanced over with wide, curious eyes, clearly quite interested in the answer.
Bai Ye's strength didn't look anything like that of an ordinary person. Had he undergone modification at some point?
Could it be that various nations had already begun conducting experiments in secret?
The thought unsettled Jill, who had assumed Umbrella was the only one doing such things. If even international law enforcement organizations were involved in human modification, then this world was exactly as Bai Ye had described — she simply couldn't find a single organization that wouldn't resort to it.
In that case, joining Bai Ye's organization made more sense than anything else. At the very least, through her interactions with him, Jill had come to understand that Bai Ye was not driven by the same madness as the others — and he had already saved her twice.
"You could say that."
Bai Ye hadn't actually undergone any modification, but he couldn't explain the truth, so attributing it to modification was the simplest answer.
Besides, he planned to create an improved version of the T-Virus later — at which point he would technically be modified anyway.
So there was no real need to clarify.
"I thought as much. So every nation and organization is already researching this?"
"More or less. The truth is, no one can really refuse what this technology offers — the ability to strengthen the body, to extend life. But the motivations vary. Some do it to produce weapons for profit, some chase personal immortality, some want to conquer the world, and some modify themselves out of necessity, in pursuit of peace. The point is — you can't look at this world through the same lens you used before."
The world had changed far too much for that. Holding onto the old perspective in a world like this was a reliable way to get killed. With so many worlds now converging, that danger was more real than ever.
