Chapter 7 - Don’t Let It Take You

The ground didn't just crack.

It split open.

A deep sound tore through the floor beneath us, like something massive was forcing its way up from underneath, not rushing, not panicking, just rising with purpose. Dust and broken stone burst upward, hitting my legs, my arms, my face. I stumbled back, losing my footing for a second, but his grip on me tightened instantly, holding me steady before I could fall.

"Stay with me," he said again, closer this time, his voice low but sharper than before.

I barely heard him.

Because the crack widened.

And something started to come through.

At first, it was just darkness.

Not shadow.

Not absence of light.

Something thicker.

Something that moved like it was alive.

Then it pushed through fully.

And the moment it did, every sound in the hallway dropped.

Not faded.

Stopped.

Like everything around us had been cut off at once.

Even the attackers froze.

Even him.

Even me.

Because this was not like the others.

This wasn't something you could fight and win.

This was something you felt.

Deep.

Cold.

Wrong.

It rose slowly from the broken ground, its form shifting constantly, never settling, like it couldn't decide what it wanted to be. Its edges blurred, then sharpened, then blurred again. And its eyes…

They didn't just look at me.

They locked onto me.

Like everything else in the room didn't exist.

My chest tightened instantly.

That pull came back.

Harder than before.

Stronger.

Like something inside me answered it without asking me first.

"No," I whispered.

My body leaned forward slightly.

I felt it happen.

I couldn't stop it.

His hand tightened around mine, pulling me back hard enough to snap me out of it for a second.

"Don't," he said.

That word hit deeper now.

Because I could feel how close I was to losing control.

"I'm not doing it on purpose," I said, my voice uneven.

"I know."

That made it worse.

Because if he knew, then that meant this wasn't just me failing.

This was something real.

Something inside me.

Something I couldn't control.

The thing stepped closer.

Slow.

Heavy.

Every movement pressed against my chest like it was trying to push its way inside me instead of just walking toward me.

"You open easier now," it said.

The voice didn't come from outside.

It was inside my head.

Louder than before.

Clearer.

"I'm not open to anything," I snapped, but my voice felt small compared to it.

"You are."

The word echoed.

And something inside me reacted.

That same energy.

But different.

Not explosive.

Not violent.

Drawn.

Pulled.

Like it wanted to go to it.

I took a step forward.

Without thinking.

Without deciding.

Just moved.

His grip tightened instantly.

He pulled me back harder this time.

My back hit his chest.

Firm.

Solid.

Grounding.

"Stay here," he said, his voice right next to my ear now.

I swallowed.

Hard.

"I'm trying."

"Try harder."

Before I could respond, the thing moved again.

Faster this time.

Not attacking.

Reaching.

Straight toward me.

Everything happened at once.

He let go of my hand and stepped in front of me, intercepting it before it could reach me.

The impact was different this time.

Not loud.

Not explosive.

Heavy.

Like two forces pushing against each other without giving in.

The air around them warped slightly, bending in ways that didn't make sense.

I stepped back, my heart racing, my breathing uneven.

This wasn't like the others.

This wasn't something you just hit and it stayed down.

This was something else entirely.

"You can't stop this," the thing said.

"I don't need to stop it," he replied, his voice lower now, more dangerous. "I just need to slow it down."

"For her?"

"Yes."

That again.

Always that.

Something twisted in my chest.

Not fear.

Not exactly.

Something else.

The thing shifted slightly, its form flickering for a second.

"You will fail," it said.

"Then I fail standing."

That hit harder than it should have.

Because of how real it sounded.

Because of how certain he was.

The thing pushed forward again.

Stronger this time.

He held his ground.

For a second.

Two seconds.

Then it forced him back.

Not much.

But enough.

Enough to make my chest tighten.

Enough to make me realize this was not a fight he could win by force.

"You don't understand what she is," the thing continued.

"I understand enough."

"No," it said. "You don't understand anything."

Silence fell for a split second.

Tight.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

I stepped forward again.

Not fully.

Just enough.

"I don't understand anything either," I said. "So why don't you explain it?"

The thing turned toward me instantly.

Its attention snapped fully back to me.

"You're beginning to ask the right questions."

"Then answer them."

"You're not ready for the answers."

"That's not your decision."

"It is when the answer breaks you."

That stopped me.

Just for a second.

But it was enough.

Because part of me believed it.

And I hated that.

"I'm already breaking," I said quietly.

His head turned slightly toward me.

Just slightly.

But I felt it.

That attention.

That shift.

"You're not breaking," he said. "You're changing."

"That's not better."

"It is if you survive it."

The thing let out a low sound.

Not laughter.

Something closer to approval.

"You see it now," it said.

"No," he replied immediately.

"She will."

"I said no."

The force in his voice this time hit harder.

Not just words.

Something behind it.

Something Alpha.

Something that pushed outward.

Even I felt it.

The thing paused.

Just for a second.

Then it moved again.

Faster.

Stronger.

This time it didn't reach for me.

It went for him.

Direct.

Violent.

He met it head on again.

But this time, the impact threw him back harder.

He hit the wall.

Hard.

Cracks spread through the surface behind him.

My chest tightened sharply.

"Hey!" I shouted, stepping forward without thinking.

The thing turned instantly.

That was all it needed.

Its attention snapped back to me.

And the pull came again.

Stronger than ever.

I couldn't fight it this time.

Not fully.

My body moved forward.

Step by step.

Like something inside me had decided already.

"No," I said, shaking my head.

But my feet didn't stop.

"You're close now," it said.

My breathing turned uneven.

My chest felt tight.

Hot.

Like something was building again.

Not outside.

Inside.

"What are you doing to me?" I asked.

"Showing you."

"I don't want to see anything!"

"That doesn't matter."

That again.

Always that.

I was getting tired of that.

Anger surged through me.

Sharp.

Fast.

Real.

"I'm done with that answer," I snapped.

The energy inside me reacted instantly.

But this time, I didn't let it explode.

I held it.

Barely.

Pain shot through my chest as I forced it to stay.

To listen.

To wait.

The thing tilted its head.

Interested.

"You're learning."

"I'm not learning," I said through clenched teeth. "I'm fighting."

"That is learning."

Before I could respond, movement hit from the side.

Fast.

Sharp.

He was already back.

He grabbed me, pulling me away from it in one strong motion.

This time, I didn't resist.

Because I felt it.

That edge.

That moment where I almost lost control completely.

He didn't let go this time.

His arm stayed around me.

Firm.

Steady.

Keeping me grounded.

"You don't go near it again," he said.

"I didn't mean to."

"I know."

"Then stop acting like I chose it."

"I'm not."

"Then what are you doing?"

"Keeping you from losing yourself."

That hit deeper than anything else.

Because it felt real.

Because it felt true.

And I didn't want it to be.

The thing stepped back slightly.

Not retreating.

Watching.

Waiting.

"You can't hold her forever," it said.

"I don't need forever."

"Then what do you need?"

He didn't answer.

His grip tightened slightly.

Not painful.

Just enough.

"To get her out," he said finally.

My chest tightened.

"You're not leaving with her," the thing replied.

"We'll see."

The tension snapped again.

Harder this time.

Everything felt like it was about to break.

The floor.

The walls.

Me.

Him.

Everything.

The thing took one last step forward

and for the first time

it smiled

not at him

something else

whispered inside me

"Let go"
