The air changed before anything else did.
It wasn't the sound.
It wasn't the movement.
It was that feeling.
Like something heavy had dropped over everything at once, pressing down, squeezing the breath out of the space around us.
I felt it first in my chest.
That same pressure.
Only this time it didn't build slowly.
It slammed into me.
Hard.
I staggered back a step without meaning to, my hand instinctively pressing against my chest.
"What is that?" I asked, my voice tight.
No one answered.
Because they felt it too.
I saw it in the way the man in front of us went still.
In the way the Alpha's body shifted slightly, his stance changing, not defensive, not aggressive, something else.
Prepared.
That scared me.
Because he was never uncertain.
Never.
But now
he was paying attention.
Not to the man in front of him.
Not to me.
To whatever was coming.
"You brought something you shouldn't have," the other man said quietly.
"I didn't bring anything," I snapped.
His eyes flicked to me.
"You don't even know when you're doing it."
That made my stomach drop.
Before I could respond, the lights above us flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then everything went dim.
Not completely dark.
Just enough to make every shadow feel deeper.
Longer.
Wrong.
A low sound followed.
Not from the hallway.
From everywhere.
Like the building itself had just taken a breath.
"Move," the Alpha said.
His voice wasn't loud.
But it carried.
Sharp. Immediate.
He grabbed my hand again, pulling me back slightly.
But this time, I didn't follow right away.
Because something ahead of us shifted.
Not a person.
Not a shadow.
The space itself.
Like the air folded in on itself for just a second
then tore open.
And something stepped through.
Not crashed.
Not forced.
Stepped.
Like it had always been there and just decided to show itself.
My heart stopped.
This one was different.
Bigger.
Not in size.
In presence.
Everything about it felt heavier.
Stronger.
Older.
Its eyes didn't just lock on me.
They settled.
Like they had finally found what they were looking for.
"No," I whispered, shaking my head.
I didn't even know what I was denying.
It didn't matter.
Because the thing tilted its head slightly
and spoke.
"You called again."
My breath hitched.
"I didn't call anything."
"You did."
The words pressed into my head, louder this time, harder to ignore.
Behind me, I felt his grip tighten.
Not fear.
Control.
"Don't answer it," he said.
Too late.
It was already inside my head.
Already pulling.
That same force from before
only now it felt stronger.
Clearer.
Like it knew exactly where to reach.
My body leaned forward slightly.
I didn't tell it to.
I didn't want to.
But it happened anyway.
"Stop," he said sharply.
I froze.
Barely.
My breathing turned uneven.
"I'm not doing this," I said quickly.
But even as I said it, my foot shifted forward again.
The other man watched, quiet now.
Interested.
Too interested.
"You see it now," he said softly. "She's not yours to control."
"I'm not controlling her," the Alpha replied.
But his voice was tighter now.
Lower.
Like he was holding something back.
The thing stepped closer.
Each step felt like it landed inside my chest instead of the ground.
"You belong to the call," it said.
"I don't belong to anything," I snapped.
"You will."
That word again.
It always came back to that.
Something inside me surged.
Fast.
Sharp.
Angry.
"No," I said, louder this time.
The energy pushed outward.
Not exploding.
Not yet.
But building.
The creature stopped.
Watching.
Waiting.
Like it expected it.
Like it wanted it.
"What are you waiting for?" the other man asked quietly.
The Alpha didn't answer.
He stepped in front of me again.
Fully this time.
Blocking both of them.
"Back up," he said.
The command hit harder this time.
Even I felt it.
That Alpha tone.
The one that didn't ask.
Didn't suggest.
It demanded.
For a second
everything paused.
Then the creature smiled.
Not human.
Not natural.
Wrong.
"You think you can stand between this?" it asked.
"Yes."
No hesitation.
No doubt.
That answer did something.
Not just to the creature.
To me.
My chest tightened.
Not fear.
Something else.
Something warmer.
Stronger.
More dangerous in a different way.
The creature moved again.
Fast.
Faster than before.
Straight toward me.
He met it head on.
The impact shook the entire hallway.
Walls cracked.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
I stumbled back, barely staying on my feet as the force of it pushed through the air.
This wasn't a fight anymore.
This was something else.
Something bigger.
Something neither of them was holding back from.
The creature struck again.
Harder.
He blocked it.
But this time, it pushed him back.
More than before.
My heart jumped.
I had never seen that.
Not once.
The other man stepped back slightly.
Not afraid.
Careful.
That was worse.
Way worse.
Because if he was careful
then this thing mattered.
A lot.
"Get her out of here," he said suddenly.
The Alpha didn't move.
"I said get her out," the man repeated.
"No."
Simple.
Sharp.
Final.
"You'll both die if you stay."
"Then we die."
That hit something in me.
Hard.
I turned toward him.
"What are you talking about?"
He didn't answer me.
His focus stayed on the creature.
Always.
But his hand found mine again.
Without looking.
Without thinking.
That small action grounded me more than anything else.
I hated that it did.
The creature let out a low sound.
Not anger.
Something closer to amusement.
"You choose her," it said.
"Yes."
Again.
No hesitation.
My chest tightened.
Something about the way he said it
made everything feel too real.
Too close.
The creature's attention shifted fully to me again.
"Then watch her break," it said.
Before I could react
it moved.
Not toward him.
Toward me.
Fast.
Too fast.
He turned.
But this time
he wasn't fast enough.
The creature reached me.
Its hand closed around my throat.
Everything stopped.
My breath cut off instantly.
Panic hit hard.
Sharp.
I grabbed at its arm, trying to pull free, but it didn't move.
Didn't even react.
"You feel it now," it said inside my head.
I couldn't answer.
Couldn't breathe.
My vision blurred.
My chest burned.
Behind it, I saw him move.
Faster than before.
Angrier.
More dangerous.
He hit the creature hard enough to shake the entire space.
But it didn't let go.
Not immediately.
For one second
two seconds
too long
Then something snapped inside me.
Not fear.
Not panic.
Something else.
Something deeper.
Stronger.
Angrier.
The energy exploded.
Not outward.
Through.
Through my body.
Through its grip.
Through everything.
The force ripped me free.
Sent the creature crashing back into the wall hard enough to crack it open.
I dropped to my knees, gasping for air, my lungs burning as I tried to breathe again.
"What just happened?" I choked out.
No answer.
Because this time
even he looked surprised.
Not calm.
Not controlled.
Surprised.
That terrified me.
The creature slowly stood up again.
Unhurt.
Of course.
Its eyes locked on me again.
Brighter now.
More focused.
"There it is," it said.
I shook my head.
"I don't want this."
"It's not about what you want."
That again.
Always that.
The other man stepped forward slightly.
"This is getting out of hand," he said.
"No," the creature replied.
"This is exactly what we need."
My stomach dropped.
We.
I didn't like that.
Not at all.
"What am I?" I asked.
This time
the creature answered.
"You are the beginning."
That made no sense.
And yet
it felt like it did.
Somewhere deep inside.
That scared me more than anything else.
---
End
The creature took one slow step toward me.
Then another.
This time
he didn't block it immediately
because something else moved
behind us
fast
loud
violent
and a voice
sharp
furious
cut through everything
"Get away from her"
I turned
just in time to see
more of them
a lot more
and this time
they weren't here to take me
they were here to kill everything
including me.
