Chapter 27 - THE RETURN OF DARKNESS

The night felt off. Ade sensed it as soon as he stepped outside. The air pressed in, thick and heavy, impossible to ignore. Silence hovered over Ajeji Village, but it wasn't peaceful anymore. Whatever hid in the shadows was paying attention.

He took slow, careful steps along the path, eyes darting to shadows stretched long and crooked across the ground. The moon was out, but even it looked drained, like something was feeding on its light.

"This isn't over…" Ade muttered. He held the sword tighter. The thing had been quiet too long, and that bothered him. After the last encounter, it stopped reacting, refused to guide him. Tonight, though, something had changed.

The blade gave off a faint vibration—barely there, but real. Ade stopped. He turned toward the village center just as a chill wind slid past, bringing the smell of wet earth, rot, and something ancient—something wrong.

"It's back," Ade whispered, jaw clenched.

Then, a sound. Soft at first, then clearer—footsteps. Not just one pair. Several. He spun around.

The once-empty path behind him filled with figures—shadows come to life. They just stood there, frozen, watching him. He slowed his breathing.

"…You again." No response, just silence. One by one, they started moving closer, jerky, puppet-like. Something invisible tugged at them.

Ade gripped his sword and spoke into the dark, "You should have stayed buried."

The closest figure lunged—fast, too fast. Ade moved by instinct, sidestepping and swinging his sword. The blade sliced air, then flesh. The figure dropped, but didn't quit. Crawling, reaching, still coming.

Ade frowned. "This isn't normal." The others closed in. Too many, not a hint of fear among them. The sword pulsed, a quiet hum vibrating in his hand. For the first time in ages, it really felt alive.

He read the warning clear as day. Something worse was almost here.

Then the earth rumbled beneath his feet, a subtle but definite shake. Ade froze, eyes lifting toward the old shrine. No one went there; everyone avoided it without knowing why. It had always felt wrong.

Now, a dark mist seeped from that direction, thickening and eating away at what little moonlight remained.

"So that's where you've been hiding…" he muttered.

The shadow-figures around him stopped all at once, like they got new orders. They turned—not toward Ade, but toward the shrine. Then, wordless, they marched off, drawn like moths to whatever waited in that darkness. Controlled.

Ade just watched. "This isn't just spirits," he whispered. "Something's using them."

The sword pulsed again, stronger this time. Ade looked down, feeling the weight, almost like the sword itself was anxious.

"You know what this is, don't you?" Still no answer, but he felt it—pressure building, tighter and more suffocating than ever.

He took a slow breath in and stepped forward. "Fine. Let's finish this."

The closer he got to the shrine, the colder the air bit in. The mist thickened until he could barely see ahead. Each step was harder than the last.

Then—whispers. Too soft to make out at first, then clearer, threading into his mind.

"Ade…"

He stopped dead. His grip tightened.

"…Who are you?"

The mist shifted, twisting, slowly taking shape. Something not quite human—maybe not human at all. Its very presence choked the air.

"You came back…" the thing whispered.

Ade stared back, hard and unafraid. "I came to end this."

The creature let out a noise—a twisted sort of laugh. "You don't understand…"

The ground cracked beneath Ade's feet. Mist surged, thicker and wilder. "You were never meant to stop this."

Ade lifted the sword. "Then I'll change that."

The shadow grew, swallowing what little light was left. The entire shrine trembled. For the first time, Ade knew. This wasn't just another fight. He faced the source—the start of everything rotten in Ajeji Village. If he lost, nothing would be left.

The sword vibrated violently, afraid or ready—he couldn't tell.

He met the darkness with a steady stance. "Yeah… I feel it too."

The mist rushed forward. The earth split open. The darkness began to move.
