Chapter 8 - Step

After a while, when Anha stepped out of the shower, she suddenly realized something—she had forgotten to put on her T-shirt.

It wasn't like there was anything particularly dangerous about the situation… but still, the moment she noticed, embarrassment flooded her entire body. Her face burned, and she hurriedly tried to cover herself, completely flustered.

Soon enough, another heated argument broke out between the two of them.

Meanwhile, Rainbow had already distanced himself. Standing a little far away, he quietly enjoyed the soft glow of the morning sunrise brushing against his body. He had no interest in their quarrels.

But deep down, a thought lingered—

He might never be able to return to where he once belonged.

And that made him feel strangely empty.

A short while later, an unfamiliar person knocked on Anha's door.

Naturally, Ha-joon went to check. The moment he understood the situation, a trace of concern crossed his face. He glanced toward Rainbow, who was lying lazily at a distance.

"So… it's finally time," he muttered.

Rainbow leaned slightly forward, his tone calm.

"Then let's hear your decision."

Ha-joon didn't hesitate.

"I'm not someone who makes mistakes."

"If I have to let Anha go, it's not a big deal for me. If fate allows us to meet again someday… then we will."

He paused, his voice steady.

"And honestly… I don't think I have any real feelings for her."

"It's true that she might like me. But it won't take long for her to realize—what she feels isn't love. It's just… affection."

"If she truly loved me, I wouldn't have had to come this far today."

A faint smile appeared on his lips.

"I don't know whether our future will ever cross again. But from today… I'm starting something new."

Rainbow listened quietly, then nodded.

"I respect your decision."

"You won't always get what you want in life. But that doesn't mean life stops."

He looked at the horizon.

"Life is like a river without barriers. It was never meant to stand still."

Ha-joon chuckled.

"You've grown quite mature, haven't you, Rainbow?"

Then he scratched his head.

"And I keep forgetting… what was the name I gave you again?"

"Oh, the name?" he replied lightly. "Go-hwan. A beautiful name, isn't it?"

Both of them laughed.

In that short time, a strange bond had formed between them—there was no denying it.

But even so, Ha-joon himself didn't fully understand how much his decision would affect Anha.

Because every situation has two sides.

People often see only one side and assume it's the truth…

But in the end, the other side deserves to be understood as well—especially when it comes to judgment.

When Ha-joon returned to the room, it was empty.

Anha was gone.

He figured she had already left for her work.

There wasn't much time left before the new semester began… but Ha-joon knew he wouldn't be attending this school anymore.

Today, he had to meet his family.

If he wanted to change his future… this was necessary.

Slowly, he began packing his belongings.

As he did, a thought crossed his mind—

No matter what happened, at least now… he could finally treat his eyes.

The moment he entered this body, he had already realized something was wrong with them. Along with it, he had inherited all the memories of the body's original owner.

"Hey… I have a question," Ha-joon said.

"If our souls were switched at birth… then why do I feel like I used to be a girl?"

"And more importantly… when I first saw Anha, I felt something strange. Something I've never experienced before."

He frowned slightly.

"And she reacted the same way. The way she looked at herself… it was like she couldn't accept it."

Go-hwan replied calmly,

"Your souls were changed, along with everything else."

"What you were before… and what you are now—those are completely different."

Then she pointed toward the table.

"Look over there. Do you notice anything?"

Ha-joon looked.

"The table? There's nothing special… just a jug, a glass, and a bottle of water."

"Exactly," Go-hwan said.

"There's a jug, a glass, and a bottle. Different shapes… but what do they all have in common?"

"…Water?" Ha-joon replied.

He smiled.

"Correct."

"Think of water as the soul."

"When you pour water into a container, it takes the shape of that container… and behaves according to it."

"Our souls are the same."

"If a human soul is placed into an animal's body, it will adapt and behave like that animal."

He paused slightly.

"But your case… is different."

"And honestly… even I don't have all the answers."

His voice grew quieter.

"I've been restricted from above."

"It's true—I'm a Grim Reaper."

"But there's someone above all of us."

"You already know that."

"And since the mistake during your birth was made by someone under me… the responsibility fell on me."

He looked at him.

"So I'm trying… to help you as much as I can."

At that moment, Ha-joon realized—

Maybe Rainbow wasn't as bad as he had once thought.

"There's no point blaming yourself," he said calmly.

"If this was written in my fate… then it was bound to happen."

"My past won't change."

"So from now on… my future is all that matters."

Hearing this, Go-hwan understood—

Ha-joon was far more mature than he appeared.

And he would never disappoint him.

"Hey… one more question," Go-hwan said.

"What is it? I don't have much time. I need to catch a bus in two hours."

He hesitated.

"…Who's going to take care of Anha after you leave?"

Ha-joon fell silent.

After a moment, he spoke softly,

"Life doesn't stop."

"And neither will Anha's."

"Maybe she'll meet someone… who will make her future even brighter."

He smiled faintly.

"I don't know if we'll ever meet again."

"But if we do…"

"I'll propose to her."

Go-hwan frowned slightly.

"And if she refuses?"

Ha-joon laughed lightly.

"Then I'll just marry someone else."

"It's not like there's anything between us."

"I don't even know why I proposed to her in the first place."

He scratched his head.

"Maybe just to show that I liked her… haha."

"But honestly… there's nothing like that."

"Our lives are different."

"I know she likes me… but it's one-sided."

"There was never anything real between us."

"I was just trying to escape the pain in my life."

"So I never had the time… to think about Anha."

While this conversation continued, Ha-joon didn't notice something—

But Go-hwan did.

Someone was listening from behind the wall.

He whispered quietly,

"So… the words have reached where they needed to."

"Did you say something?" Ha-joon asked.

"No… nothing."

But in his mind, Go-hwan sighed softly—

"Poor girl…"
